I always use a small plain hook because I want the minnow to be swimming around freely. I do very well on perch and crappies doing this.

I like to use a glow jig that hangs horizontally. I'm usually sight-fishing for crappie in my shanty so if I see them come in and look at the bait and not take then I'll switch to a plain hook.
I also only hook my minnows through the lips.

i would use little tiny hooks suspended under a splitshot...i got sick of watching fish hit the splitshot LOL
i now use a 1-32 oz horizontal jig in plain lead...hook the minnow thru the lips and he will swim forward natually, the jig swings around against his side...he stays alive and active a long time...and the hook is right over his head
sometimes i will try a glow jig but usually they love the lead jig with the red hook. [wall mart]
