View Full Version : Creating a "Photo CD"

I have about 6 "carousels" of old family photos on slide.
It's a pain in the butt to drag out the projector and screen to look at them. I just bought a film/slide scanner. I'd like to scan all of them into the computer and create a Photo CD. I thought I had software that would do it but apparently don't. It came with some software that will do it but I believe that the CD has to be used on another computer.

What I would like to do is create a CD that can be put into my DVD player and look at the pictures on the TV. That way, once I have my CD created I can make copies for family members and they can enjoy them too.

Has anybody out there ever attempted this ? If so, what software did you use ?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Roxio EasyCD Creater does a pretty good job for just about any format.

Thanks Amos.

That's what I had heard. I went to CompUSA to check out Easy CD Creator 5.0. It was marked $99.99 but someone told me it was $89.99 with a $30 rebate. I was just about to buy it and head home but I decided to check with someone at the camera counter first. He told me that it would do the job, (make slideshows and such) but they would only be useable on a computer NOT a TV. :(

After looking around a bit I found a program that looked like just what I was looking for. It's called On DVD. It's only $20 and it said you can use a CD burner to put digital images on CD with a music track and play them in a DVD player ON A TV ! I was on my way up to the register to buy it, (and save about $40 in the process) when I decided to pick up some blank CD's. On checking out the selection I found a 5 pack of "Photo CD's" for $5. I looked closer at the package and it actually came with a free trial copy of MVP by Smartdisk. I put back the On DVD and decided to try out MVP. I got it home and it works SLICK ! It does just what I wanted it to do . :) :) Unfortunately, after I was done creating the CD I took it out to my DVD player and found that it's incompatible. :( :( The DVD player needs to be VCD 2.0 compatible. Oh well, it was a nice idea. I think I'm just going to return the scanner and forget the whole thing. I'm NOT going to go out and buy a whole new DVD player just so I can watch pictures on my TV. :)

Anyway, thanks for the input.

John, Roxio claims to create DVDs compatible with most players, including those you use with a TV. I would give them a second look, the salesman's advice notwithstanding. I could be dead wrong, but it is probably worth an e-mail, no?

By the way, a google search puts Roxio and OnDVD and as top hits :) for what it's worth.
Good luck

Thanks Kevin.

I think I'll send an email or two before I bail on the idea. It would really be nice to be able to see our old family photos more often.
We haven't looked at those slides in YEARS.

A good deal of photos from our past deer camps are on slide too.
Maybe I'll look through them and try to find some of them. Then I can post them here. If I remember correctly there are some pretty good photos.

I'm not giving up yet ! :)
