Today I fished a familiar place again and similar results. this time I forgot the bait and had to use a spoon. this one was a fire tiger brand in fire tiger orange with a red jensen egg.. Famous Dave turned me on to this one. I had never caught a fish on it and my trusty rapala was not producing so I tied it on. Game on. I took home 13 or 15 and my buddy juan had his share. I let go another 30 under 8. this trip nothing under 8 into the bucket. most of the bite came in a mid-morning flurry. i lost an absolute pig about 4 foot under the ice. It pulled drag and got off.i do have another picture but my gallery is full. if someone gives me their e-mail address i can mail it, so someone can post it. Just p.m. it to me.

I've fished with Double Trouble before and I can assure that he works his ass off to find fish. He drives the miles, walks the miles, and does the searching. No shanty, no sled, no quad. Just a bucket and something to put a hole in the ice.
If he says he caught fish I believe him.
Now Dan, did you send a return PM to my son MuskyHunter?:lol::lol::lol:

Thanks Mike, I think i got it re-sized and sent to Bonney to post. I can't believe how tired I was from dragging the shanty through that snow. See , i even bought a shanty this year. it was nice. Shanty, heater ,and lazer auger.I still like my bucket ,but last year i got a jet sled Jr. I'm getting too old to carry it all. it works well especially if there is snow. I did spend a few hours hole hopping ,but most of the fish came in a 2 hour flurry. I even asked if anyone wanted to go. I got one response. I did fish all day and might go Tuesday. Juan is going today ,but the weather today and tomorrow is going to be terrible.
I deleted all my messages and can't remember if your son wrote me. Great, the damn cat just threw up.

double trouble
12-22-2008, 07:10 AM
It is about 10 feet deep with weed beds either on the bottom or nearby. not like metro ,but where you pull up a green weed once in a while with a Rapala. The fish are not bellies to bottom. I am marking them a foot up and hooking them from there down.
Yes , I am using a Vexilar fl8 slt and I need something with better bottom separation.I have only owned it 3 or 4 years and am now addicted to it. The first 2 years it was a toy until I learned how to use it. This is embarrassing ,but I never learned to push the knob for the interference rejection until Saturday. I always kept pushing the little square yellow button and thought that mine was broken . I bought the unit used. My IR button was always on and I never knew why.
I'm just a dumb old fisherman i guess.
I never leave to fish without it.. I think it has raised my game from a good ice fisherman to one of the 10% who catches fish almost every time out.
With perch If you are not catching within the first 15 minutes move. When the bite slows down its time to hole hop. Then back to the shanty.Learn how to sight fish. The fish roam in packs. So should you. Go to selfrdge and fish 5 fow by the barracks. Use a shanty. It is clear water. Watch how they come and go. Watch how they react to jigs. Leave the bait home one day. That is how i learned. Same at metro when it clears up. Sorry for the long post ,but there is more to me catching fish than location. This year I perch fished from shore in October, November and December. I was on ice December 7 catching gills. I have put my time in. I will be back at it Tuesday morning. Good fishing to everyone and I hope I help you put more fish on the ice.

Double Trouble,
I just bought my Vexilar FL-8 SE a week or so back and used this past Saturday for the first time. I was in 4 feet of water and had a hard time with bottom separation (hard determining what was true bottom and maybe fish along the bottom), I later moved to 7 feet of water in a canal and could target fish and had better separation. A fisherman told me to buy an S-cable, which I did and I am waiting for it to arrive this week. It is suppose to cut your signal strength by 50% to 70% and helps make separation and viewing easier in shallow water. Do you use this S-cable?
If not, you can get it direct from Vexilar for $18.00. ThorneBros wanted $30 for the same cable. I could not find it in staock at any of the local sporting goods retailers that handle Vexilar.

Headed out today. I am new to this game this season and am now addicted. I have only been out behind the library in the Shores and am ready to venture out with my fishing buddy (my 13 y/o son). He is addicted as I am!!
I have heard a lot about the Raft and would like to know a little more if you guys would care to share. I was thinking about the wind and heard there are canals there. Is the fishin' good in the canals around the Raft as well?
I was thinking of bringing my daughter too as she is begging me to take her. She is not new to the cold as she bow hunts and has been out muzzleloader hunting with me to. She is 10 and has put her time in!!
Thanks guys for all the help you have given me thus far here on this site and thanks to all the great folks I have met on the ice as you are not affraid to help a newbie out. I have only caught dinks thus far and am looking forward to catching some keepers and having a nice perch dinner!!

I don't take pictures of fish and do not post success stories all that often but I would say I catch good fish and good numbers most of the time as well. For example, I have been out twice this year and have caught good fish both times. The Saturday before last we had two limits of gills and 25 perch. Last Saturday wasn't as good but I still cleaned 50 nice fish.
If someone says they are doin good - most likely they are!
In any case, Double Trouble is not the only fisherman getting good fish every time out.

When you are in areas where it is hard to separate bottom from fish or what not, they are generally weeds. 90% of the time thats how your bottom is going to look unless its a real sandy/defined bottom. In 4 FOW power is not the issue for bottom separation.

I finally got beat. Not by the fish ,but by the weather. The bite was on ,but mostly dinks. I caught 3 keepers ,1 jumbo , and about 20 dinks in about an hour before i was too wet to fish. I think I could have scratched a meal If i hadn't been so lazy and dragged the shanty out. It was just a misting rain when I got out of the truck and progressed into a driving rain soon thereafter. My gear was soaked and my hands got cold. That was enough and I called it a day. I was tipping my spoon with a minnow and getting instant hits. Oh yeah , it is an ice tiger in fire tiger pattern. I also used my micro perch rig with a chunk of pink plastic on the hook. I caught a few with no bait. I will try again Saturday if the rain doesn't stop me.

Perch Eater,
I fished with Double Trouble today and we threw back 100 dinks between the 2 of us non stop action he was using a spoon I was slip bobbing with minnows. We ended up with 5 or so over 12" and my big one 13" felt like a smallmouth. This was a marina area we have fished before just loaded with minnows and yellow belly perch. We both lost ones at the hole we thought would be master angler class. Glad I got up and fished in the rain on December 26th, thanks Dan that was one for the ages.

I told the wife i was going out for a little fish trip and wasn't coming home until I had enough for dinner. well it took from 9-3 but I had more than enough . If anyone wants to post the pictures just leave me an e-mail address . Most of the pictures are in black and white except one. I set me camera on the wrong setting. I kept 14 over 8 inches. 4 were over 11 . I had a pound or 2 of fillets . The hot lure today was a marks spoon. It is green/white with a red spot , glow back with a hard red bead.I caught over 100 fish and this setup made it easy to hit the fish on the ice and not get my hands wet. I also took a couple nice ones on a chartreuse jigging rapala size 2. Be careful, The ice is crap , use a spud and watch out.

If I get back from my new years party at a decent hour, I am going fishing in the morning. I was out yesterday ,but did not take a rod . I was checking the ice. I think its alright. I am really just looking for a master angler perch.
On a side note . We went to Golden corral last night for dinner. The bourbon chicken is excellent. I found a recipe for it and made my version tonight. It was GONE. I bet that would be good with perch.
Marinade 1 pound chicken or fish in
1/4 cup bourbon(Jim Beam)
1 T minced garlic
2T grated onion
1/2 cup soy sauce
1 T grated ginger
1/2 cup brown sugar
For later
1T corn starch
2 T white wine
Marinade overnight . remove from marinade(save it) and pan fry till cooked through put marinade and last 2 ingredients in and cook until thickened.Serve with rice pilaf.
I also took 4 small onions and sauteed them with a tablespoon ginger until caramelized and added 2 small sliced zucchini plus 1/4 cup water. steam 5 minutes.

Bruce William and I did a little recon mission at a favorite haunt and the results were close to the same as last weekend. Not quite as many dinks as last weekend and the size overall was down a tad ,but we did bring home 18 from 8-12 inchers and at least 6 were HOGS. Today the bigger fish wanted minnows so i tipped my trusty parrot rapala and my favorite ice tiger. I also caught a jumbo on my mini perch rig. Bruce got the biggest one of the day and just like last weekend it was a slip bobber minnow combo and the first fish of the day.
I did lose 3 big fish ,but the minnow rig is hard to hook them sometimes . Some guys near us had a pole pulled through the ice. Another unlucky fellow had a pike on but it snapped off. Everyone had a few perch at least.
We fished from 9-1 and the bite died so we headed home.
I did not take pictures today ,but I am going again in a few days and hopefully will have some then. After a slow start today and a couple moves I sure got my mojo working again. till next week its double trouble OUT.:)

A buddy of mine found a new spot for walleye inland so i haven't been on the perch much . The fine weather kept me home too. I was out tonight on this walleye spot and took a nice fat 21 inch that pushed 3 pounds. I was only out 20 minutes when it hit. My same #2 parrot jigging rapala tipped with a minnow on the bottom hook. I never knew the fish was on. We were marking a lot of fish on the vex and I just pulled up and he was on. He pulled about a 24 inch 5 pounder before dusk on a jig-a whopper . We have a picture that we'll post later.
I am going out tomorrow a.m. if the roads cooperate. perch time again . I'll report when i get home.

The easy way is to report that I caught lots of dinks and 6 solid keepers. The fish want meat live or dead. I was marking lots of fish ,but I think the high skies and time of day i fished put a damper on it today.
I did not get out until after 10 and the bite shut down by 1 as usual.
I do have a hot spot we are going tomorrow because i had 2 reports of about 20 solid keepers per man and i hope i don't have to trudge through the snow again. PLEASE RAIN . I can't take carrying all my junk through the snow much longer. I am getting reports that the salt river area has picked up lately too with the clear water. see you out there.

I am headed either to metro or cotton. probably metro because the walk is shorter and so is the drive. I really don't need to fish again, but i promised a friend of mine who doesn't get out much that we could go. Just call if you want to join in.leaving my house usual time. i'll drive.

Fished in close today at a marina on the mile roads. The fish are back in close. I did not catch a lot of fish (maybe 30) ,but i did keep a half dozen over 9 inches. This is the first day I have seen some size back in close. The water was still kind of clear. Most came on a hook and a minnow or a spoon tipped with a dead minnow.. They wanted meat. A guy near me took a few that went about 12 inches. I officially declare last ice. The edges were kinda soft and I almost went down in a big hole. Thank you spud. A guy I fished near said that he went down to his neck this weekend and he was back at it today. Be careful.
No pictures today. Maybe tomorrow.

I said last ice because the larger males are coming in and the edges of the ice are getting soft.
Its almost perch milking season. Here is a picture of an 11.5 inch male just about ready for milking. http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/529/medium/perch_milking.jpg
