Curious if any of the succesfull mi elk hunters attempted a DIY hunt on public land? I pulled a 3rd season hunt and believe this is the way we are going to go. Trying to cram in as much info before the season arrives and any help from this years Dec hunters would be great. Thanks

Hi Dutch25,
I had the Dec. hunt in area A for a cow and got mine the afternoon of the first day. We hunted on state land in the camp 30 hills area and the elk I shot was the twelfth we saw that day. Saw some bulls and messed up on another cow but biggest factor was the snow depth hard hunting in 24" plus snow. If you want any specifics send me a PM.

Congrats and good luckWhat area are you going to be in. Cow or any tag. I didnt use a guide either for both of my hunts 12/08 for a cow and 09/93 for a cow. 93 hunt was 3 days and 08 hunt was an hour If you do end up using a guide I would hook up with someone here that used one. there are several good ones but a few shady. Drive around cut tracks and glass the clear cuts farm fields etc. Good luck
Congrats! I shot a 6x7 bull in area D last week. I'm actually eating an elk burger right now.:D I have no doubt my buddy and I could have found and killed "an" elk on public land by ourselves. Finding the bull I wanted and then getting 500+ lbs of elk in the truck is why I hired a guide. He worked his butt off scouting to find a group of big bulls and was able to use local connections to help with getting it in the truck. If I was cow hunting I might have tried it alone for a day or so. With a once in a lifetime bull tag, I never hesitated to hire the best guide I could find. Several others on here have hunted with this guide and had nothing but great things to say. If you want his name/number, pm me and I will gladly provide it for you.

Congrats on your tag!
I would agree with Bmac, finding and shooting one would'nt be extremely difficult. But getting the animal out would be quite a task.
I hunted in Dec. 2007, hired a guide and am glad I did.
What ever you decide, enjoy it! It is an awesome experiance.
Also, I would definitely use snowshoes. It is much easier to hike in the deep snow.
Good luck

I shot 6x6 on public land DIY. it was a Dec, hunt. Usually the DNR will help steer you in the right direction. They want you to fill your tag.

I shot my bull that same year...did you go to the CBM banquet/awards ceremony that year? There were some of the biggest bulls killed that year there...which was cool.
