Does a Coleman lantern really give off enough heat to make it comfortable inside the shanty?

Works for me.;) Just don't get too close to the sides.:yikes: One of the reasons they hide the lighters when I'm around.:16suspect:evil:

There is a noticable difference between having one and not having one, but it dosn't turn the shanty into a sauna - thats for sure

If you have room in your shanty for both....get both...(Lantern and heater)...Can always turn one off or down.......Mack

It depends on what coleman lantern you get. I have a propane, quick light one with a single long tube style mantle that can get very warm. When we have that going in our deer hunting trailer (16ft), our furnace barely runs, even when it is 20 degrees out. If we run it full bore for light we only get about 4-5 hours out of a can though. For ice fishing I have a buddy heater and I never get cold. The nice thing about them is you can hook up a 20 pounder and I can go weeks without refilling.

I use a standard 2 mantle coleman lantern in my shanty and I can sit in there with my t-shirt on. If I put my mr buddy heater in there I have to keep a door open because it gets too hot in there. A lantern works just fine. Try it out and you'll see. No need to buy a heater if you dont need to. I have used a lantern for years. The one time my wife went, she was even comfortable with just a lantern goin.

I would go with the heater personally. You get some of them single digit days and wind, I need a heater, a lantern just doesn't do it for my skinny butt.:D

If you want heat, the white-gas lanterns put out more btu's than the propane.
I have about 10 lanterns(one from 1935) & love them, but I always use a Powerhouse when ice fishing.
Like others have already stated, if it's 10* & windy you'll probably want a Mr. Heater with ya !
If your crappie/walleye fishin after dark-bring both...

Is your shanty insulated? Does your shanty have a floor?

Lot of info here, thanks guys. I have a Mr buddy type heater, but the question was really two fold. For the heat and the light when fishing toward dark. I have had other heat sources that resulted in a hole in my other shanty, snow pants that melted and a lot of burnt off line. Gonna give the Coleman a try while the weather isn't to bad. Thanks again.

I think it depends on the shanty. When I first started I used a 4 man dome tent and it kept it nice and warm. Then I switched to a "Fred Trost homeade jobby" w' skis and it didn't. It won't keep my Viking style shanty warm either.
