SANILAC COUNTY, Mich. -- A state trooper from the Sandusky State Police satellite post was called to investigate an abandoned vehicle parked on Marlette Road near Tubbs Road in Washington Township.

The caller stated the vehicle had been sitting on the side of the road for at least a day.

When the trooper arrived, he noticed snow covering the pickup and saw in the bed of the truck an empty gun case along with other hunting equipment.

After running the truck’s plates and attempting to contact its owner in Port Huron, it was learned the owner, Charles Sloan, 58, had been last seen the day before when he left to go hunting.

A K-9 unit was dispatched and with assistance from the Applegate Fire Department, Sloan was discovered deceased in the woods.

Police said their initial study shows no signs of foul play and authorities will continue to further investigate the death.

Prayers for his family, but I might add, that is the way I want to go if it was a natural death in the woods.

That's how my dad went in 1987. His buddie's were waiting for him by their car's and when he didn't come out they went to his blind and thought he was asleep, his gun was on his lap and his hat was pulled down over his eye's like he was taking a nap.

in some cultures, the elders are sent out to the woods once they become lame...i actually would prefer to go out like that in the woods or in the mountains, though id like the temps to be a bit warmer.

He and his family are in my prayers. That would be the way I would want to go as well.

I agree. I pray for the family. Especially just before Christmas.

my prayers go out to his family. id also rather be dead in the woods than surronded by other dead people in a cemetary.....a cemetary is kinda like a city. lotta people in small cramped area rather in the woods where you can breathe clean air and not death air.

a few years ago one of my uncles was seriously injured in a car crash in alcona county on his way to work, he laid in a hospital bed in a coma for months. that year, when we all came back in from the evening hunt opening day of gun season that year, the phone rang, and it was my mother calling to tell us that he had passed within the past couple hours. i'll always wonder if it was his way of getting out of the hopsital bed and into the woods with all of us one last time before he left us.

anyways,my prayers are also with that fallen hunters family, and i would have to agree, that might not be the worst way to go out.

My best to the family, I know its little comfort but he passed in pursuit of something he enjoyed, - i wonder how big the buck was that caused that!- and may I not see that buck for several more years:confused:

May he rest in peace in the big hunting wilderness in the sky.

My prayers go out to his family and friends. :(

???? I hadn't heard that one. I have heard the elders choose to go.... "'Today is a good day to die"... (Movie, 'Windwalker', I believe.)

Animals seem to know when it's their time. Man may have lost some of that, but perhaps if we could choose....... yeah, I'd like to 'go out ' hunting: doing what I love.

Thoughts and prayers being sent to the family of the fallen brother-of-the-wilds. May you find peace.

Strength to his family, but hey, what a way to go.
