I am not familair with the Lake. We are looking for a cabin to rent near a good area on the lake to catch blugills. Does anyone reccomend a certain side of the lake or better yet know of a good cabin(s) to rent? Appreciate any advice. We will probably go mid week in January sometime.

Its likely, your not going to catch any blue gills on Hougton Lake. Those days are long gone. :(

Like someone else said, pick a different lake, Lake Margrethe perhaps.

Houghton has mostly pike. And some walleyes and perch, if you know where to go, which I don't. Over on the South West side of the lake you can find some good pike.

houghton still has some good gills but you have to be in right spot, i would try the bay by burger king in prudenville. there is a road right at the light and theres good parking since the 123 lake street resturaunt burned down. i would get a hot spots map or use a gps with a map card and hit the edges of the holes. i was in there last year ( in a boat ) and cleaned up really well on gills.... i understand the millfoil prob has come back so they have some cover from the pret fish. when they poisend the lake a few years ago it created a feeding frinzy for a while then everything calmed down, but its starting to pick up from what i understand as long as you know where to go!!!!!!!!! i still know some people from there that fish damn near every day and do real well, but they're locals and fish every day!!!! I dont live far from there but i dont really fish that lake too much any more, just once in a while if i fish with a bud from there....... Readsburg dam is a nice place to fish and not too many people go there, thats on the west side of houghton off 55, the back waters of the dead stream swamp......... what ever you do dont ask the bait shops because they will just blow smoke up your a**!!!!!!

They were doing pretty decent on gills a couple days ago right in the thick of it on the west side by Lymans. believe it or not.

gills/bass/some pike... not very good ice. My buddy lives next to Lyman (right next door in fact) but he said he wouldn't try it yet. There is still open water on the lake.

Yeah, thats a big lake with some big currents. I'd stay off that for a while.

Middle grounds for gills. Got into em two years ago out there. But as someone else said, I'd probably go somewhere else.

...umm, first time trying to get a pic in the reply..? hows it done?

picture needs to be uploaded to a website and have a web address, cannot load it straight from your hard drive. you can load it into your gallery and then load it from there with the addy.

I was fishing Houghton from the Townline rd launch and there was about 5" to 8". Which area is that because we were thinking about taking our quads out there next week and don't feel like having to float em out.:xzicon_sm

There is a pic of the only nice fish we got last time out in my gallery. Can not get it to post. Def not the norm, but there is good fish to be had there.

Speaking of gills at H.L. Again my buddy lives there... he took me out last year to a pond on state land that was full of bluegills. Was all excited until we got home and started cleaning them... they were full of these translucent worms 3/4" long--and I mean every one of them has so many you couldn't do anything with the meat.

I know some of you guys eat them but they were soooo full of worms I just couldn't do it.

Like RJSwirlz said, the middle grounds, we were in about 9 ft of water, find the thick weeds and you're in luck. After you catch a few move on to another hole. We drilled about 100 holes that day, but the four of us caught our limit of BIG crappie and gills.
