Like the title states, Is it wrong to ask someone that has an auger to drill you a hole?

I live literally 2 minutes from Wilson boat launch on Upper Hamlin lake. I have seen several people out ice fishing the last few days. And I would really like to go. But I can't afford to buy an auger right now. And I know from previouos experiences that Michigan peeps can be really mean or offended sometimes. I would have no problem if the tables were turned. What do you think?

Its not wrong, With this economy , alot of people dont have equipment to participate in this sport. My advice would to you: ask nicely and maybe offer a beer or 2 to the guy with the auger. He/ she will be likely to do it or loan you the auger. Just got a ask, all they can say is no, i doubt that will happen.

Muliefever if you ever get down to the Hesperia/White Cloud area I'll give you an auger FREE. It's one of the old spoon types that still has the plastic blade saver on it. Hasn't been used in probably 30 years and I'm sure it needs to be sharpened. The only catch is you'll have to shovel out about a 3 ft. snowdrift in front of my shed door..........but it's yours if you want it.......even have an extra scoop laying around that you can have...........

If you don't know what the spoon types are there's a thread in one of the ice fishing sections that shows pictures and talks about them.

PM me if you're interested............

I've handed over my auger to let people drill holes before. Always glad to help when I can.

It shouldn't be a problem. If he/she is a real sportsman, they should be more than willing to drill you some holes. I have drilled hundreds of holes for folks with the gas auger. I used to fish a small private lake up north, and one of the residents who was an elderly gentleman would come out to fish everytime he saw me on the ice, he said it was the only time he could fish because he did not have the strength to do it himself anym, ore. Fished with that gentleman for three winters until he finally passed away last summer. So by all means I say go ask and enjoy your day of fishing.:)

Yep, I loan mine out pretty willingly as long as they are nearby me and always remember to NOT slam the point down on the ice, it's not a post hole digger. i was fishing one day when 6 guys showed up and all forgot their auger. Wanna guess what they didn't forget? It was posted in the "things you have forgot to take out on the ice" thread.

if you borrow someones auger whatever you do DO NOT bang it on the ice to clean it off when you get through with your hole. I had someone do that to my lazer one day last year I thought i was going to kill him:)

There are always unused holes that people are no longer using. You might not even need to ask about anyones auger. Bring a hatchet or stiff bar that you can knock the skim ice off an old hole.

I fish with a guy from work , b4 i had an auger we'd go together and i'd always drill all the holes by hand using his, that was the deal . He'd always say ..."my auger you drill , plus you're 15 years younger". Boy , it only took 1 season of that b.s drilling thru 13+ " of ice to figure out that its time to buy a gas machine. Now i say , "since its my auger , you bring the sandwiches". You can find hand augers in the classified here or on craigslist for quite cheap--maybe 10-20 bucks . good luck

If all else fails, take a BF hammer, chisel, spud, and start banging holes through the ice for a few minutes. I'll bet every guy within 100 yards offers you their auger :)

Loaning out my Lazer is like loning out my pier net. There's no way in Hell that's going to happen. I'll stop what I'm doing to net a fish or two for ya or even punch a couple of holes for ya. But that depends alot on the guys attitude.

Especially up there off wilson, there will be holes all over to use. And right now, a spud is plenty for the ice we have, don't really need an auger yet. And usually you can get someone to auger you a hole if you need them to. I have punched plenty of holes for guys w/ the power auger.

Of course I would have a problem with asking people to drill my holes.... But then again what straight man would not...

I used to have the same situation. Guys would give me their power auger and tell me to have fun. Then, before they left they would tell me to drill any other holes I may want for future use. After these experiences, I have no choice but to help someone out. Like others have said, DON'T BANG THE AUGER ON THE ICE. Also, don't adjust the height. You can lose the little part and then you'll have an angry fisherman. Anyone who won't let you use their auger, or drill you a hole has no business on the ice.

I would help any one who would need a hole drilled and have a few times before I have an power auger and every time I go out on my lake and see guy trying to drill through 8+ inches of ice with a hand auger I always ask if they want to use it or if they would like me to drill a few holes for them I actually meet a lot of people out on the ice who would do the same thing so go ahead and ask them the most they can tell you is no

Houghton Lake on Sunday a guy came and asked if he could borrow my auger. Seemed after trying to drill a hole for awhile he noticed he didn't have any blades. Someone at home took them off after last season and didn't bother to put them back. Drilled quite a few holes and offered to drill more. Not going to borrow a four hundred dollar auger to someone I don't know though.

I don't mind pokin holes for some one that looks like there lost. Especially ole folks and dad's with young one's with him. Poked a lot of holes for the gentlemen.........hmmmmmmm....to strong a word..........motely crew I've fished with in the past even though they had hand auger available. Loan it out to a stranger........nope don't think so.

my dad told me people would offer him money to drill holes. think that was in the early 50's. i guess his uncle bought him one in wis. before they were popular over here.

I've had a few times when I forgot the auger at home and had to ask people to borrow their auger and have never been turned down, sometimes its the other way around. Theres a lot of great guys out there you shouldnt have a problem getting a few holes drilled.

We went to Minnesota from Seattle a couple of christmas's ago. Of course I wanted to ice fish so the boys and I bought some cheap prestrung poles, some waxworms, found a local lake with some people fishing. Told them where we were from and would it be okay if they drilled a hole for us, and the next thing I knew about 10 people were offering in no paticular order augers, baits, beers, etc....

My oldest who was about six at the time was catching dink sunny's left and right, and whooping it up every time he caught something. By the time we left, virtually every person fishing was facing our direction watching and laughing at/for us and knew where we were from and why it was such a screaming blast for us.

I love the ice fishing community.

Now that is cool as heck Jack! Did you tell him that you were jacktownhooker? If you did I bet he was amazed.

I think it's cool when people know me on a lot of lakes as the guy hunting gills and knocking them dead with my ice flies. You would not believe how many guys know me on the ice. It's even funnier when they say that their buddy was there the night before and some dude was slamming the gills with some weird fly looking things with no bait. I just laugh and show them the flies.

As for the original question of this thread I agree with others that if you can't lend a guy your auger then you should not be fishing. I will however say that it kind of gets to me when someone comes out on the ice with no auger just because he is too lazy to drill holes himself. Or the guys who come out with an auger and don't drill any holes but sit right down and start fishing out of one of my holes. Guys in your current situation I can totally sympathize with and would have no problem even drilling a few for you. I drilled about 75 holes yesterday and it seemed as if no one else that came out drilled any themselves. How many other guys on here get upset with this?
