There was a thread about "slab" gills a couple days ago. Someone asked what is considered a slab. Well there ya go. Those are a couple of the biggest I have ever seen. Good job. I dream of gills like that. They were caught through the ice I take it?

yes they are, most of the bigger gills out this way are hybrid of some sort, still I consider them gills but if there is a true non redear gill over 10" that is really something to be proud of. The first pic in the thread of the mounted gill is a redear as well.

A redear sunfish is just that....no hybridizing involved.

Ever caught a gill that has slightly less red ear marks, those have to have been mixed in with the stocked redears, so therefore some of them have to be hybird some how, not on purpose but by nature. The true redear blue gills are real thick and lighter colored a red ear sunfish is another type of redear alltogether. There are many diffrent types of sunfish, Large mouth and smallmouth bass are considered part of the sunfish family. There are lots of diffrent types of blue gills within the sunfish family I usually consider them all the same, up in the northwoods there are 10" gills that are about as thick and amazing as the southern redear famliy.

I would give my right nut for an 11+" gill. My girlfriend says I'm obsessed and I'm starting to agree w/ her.

Some nights I go out and release everything I catch just looking for my trophy. Even started releasing the gills I catch that are >9.5"....someone else will probably catch and eat but I'm hoping karma will help me w/ the quest.

Do you really think 1lb line helps w/ the monsters? I use 3lb floracarbon.

Here is a pic from a few years ago. They both were caught on Lake George on the Michigan/Indiana border. The fish on the left is the one I caught (not me in the pic though) and measured 10.5 inches. The fish on the right measured 12.5 inches. Both are redears.
