I was wondering if any shop in my area would look at my auger to see if the pitch is messed up. I bought it new at like last ice last year and it worked great. I used it about 7 times making sure to put the cover on when I was done. Now it will barely cut. The blades are sharp but I think the Pitch is messed up or something. Any advice guys?

Did you drop it or did it get bent?

I dont think it was dropped but I cant be sure. I just think the angle of the blades is tweaked. its a 7" btw

try tightening up the screws.

did you have ice build up? I have the eight inch and has been beaten up real bad I did not think you could bend them?

Just buy some new blades.

Contrary to what some believe they can get bent enough to not cut properly. Try taking the blades off and putting them back on and tighten each screw a little at a time so they pull down evenly.

If you ever have a hole that has a layer of ice in it and you take your auger and try to break the ice out you can bend them enough so it wont cut properly.Dont ever do that!Use the spud thats what its for.

If you ever had the blades sharpened the pitch could be wrong. Sharp or not if the angle isn't perfect they will skip across the ice.

And ya... never let ANYBODY use your auger but YOU!

I made that $50 mistake only once.

I have one of those blue ice blade sharpeners made for lazer blades,I ran it across mine today a few times and they are much sharper.I wont know if the cut aNy better though until I can get out again.

I did the same and the guy will never let me hear the end of it. He swears its as sharp as he recieved it but he must have re-drilled thru a old hole or smacked it down because it was never the same.

My laser was the same sunday. i replaced the blades late last year and barely cut. There was slight rust on the blades and think that might be it. I take good care of mine as well.

I am gonna try and find a sharpener for the lazer.

Stinger! Do you know where you got it from?

What happens if you re drill a hole?

What happens if you re drill a hole?
The ice in the old hole will be w different density than the surrounding ice causing your auger to go haywire

I think ill take the blades off and make sure they're even and if that dosent work I'll get the sharpener, and if that dosent work, ANYONE WANT A 7" LAZER??? LOL

A proffessional sharpening would probably do it !

don't waste your money on the sharpener (I have both Lazer sharpeners).

Let a pro sharpen your blades.

Man, I wished I would have known that 4 years ago. The guys told me the lazor auger was OK for opening up old holes. I bet I have opened up several hundred holes since I bought mine and to date it still cuts like it's new. Must be a fluke.

Tim, your blades are dull. They may feel sharpe but not cut ice. Some times ice may have sand mixed in it, when the blades hit that they are toast. I have had this happen several times. Also never cut a hole in shallow water, this is a good place for sand to be mixed in the ice. This is the place to use a spud, usually early ice and not very thick. Lot easier to check ice safety with spud.

For what it's worth, I have been sharpening my Mora 6'' blades for years. I use a Lanski sharpener (the one with the guide rods). I bend the guide rods just enough for the stone to contact the cutting edge and sharpen only one side of the cutting bevel. Without bending the rod the stone tends to ride on the back edge of the cutting bevel (sorry that I can't create a picture or drawing).

You probably need to shim the blades to get a more aggressive cut angle. They do sell shim kits if I remember correctly...

He's talking about using your auger like a spud and trying to break the ice out by blunt force instead of drilling it out.

Mine was the same way. I was just shaving the ice.
Take a couple of paper match sticks, ripe the flint end off and put the sticks in towards the back of the blades and re-tighten. It'll change the pitch enough to cut into the ice again. This will work for a while until the match sticks deterioates from getting wet. If you shim them too much they'll grab too hard and you won't be able to turn it.
Fill up a 5 gallon bucket of water and let it freeze and try your auger out it that if your not heading to a lake soon.

Good luck.
