I take both a GPS and Compass ...you only have to be out in a White out or have the fog move in once,,,and you will never be with out them

I use mine to help me locate structure that I've found during the open water months. On larger bodies of water (ie: Saginaw Bay, Lake Erie, ect...) it can be a life saver!

Both. Handheld and compass. You can get royally screwed if the batteries die and for some reason a fog sets in off the lake. Been there.:16suspect

I take a Garmin handheld GPS and Compas with me on the ice. Used the GPS a couple of times to get back to the shore on Saginaw bay as we were out about 5 miles coming back in in a white out.

I use one for marking structure all the time. It's great when the weather has changed the surface of the ice enough to where you can't find spots you are looking for anymore.

Are any of you using the one with maps in them to locate structure areas?

Its nice to have a PLGR to mark hot spots on a new lake or at night.

We do ever since my husband and I went with my father. We were following my father on the way in from fishing all day and noticed he was pointing his keys all along the shoreline...pressing the remote start to locate his truck....I never heard the end of that one....lol

Don't think that one would work along the shoreline of LSC.:16suspect

I remember in the early 80s we didnt need a locator. Maybe my vexilar has made me blind, but I cant catch fish without it.I not only locate fish, but can tell if I have bait, or my hook is showing. They can be frustrating though too. when you mark 5ftof fish and no takers.I would recommend some type of flasher. Many good ones out there, but pricey.GOOD LUCK.
