In the woods. I've always said that a fella can't shoot a buck or a duck when he's sitting on the couch watching TV.
Seriously; I hunt along the edges of watersheds in Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Wexford, and Manistee counties. I had my Lab out for a couple of hours on Sat. morning while I checked on the scent lures that I have out for bear. He flushed 5 woodcock and 2 covies of young grouse.
It's awful dry up here now. Scenting is difficult for a dog, and the birds spooky.

I try to hunt pheasants in Saginaw county and I hunt Grouse and Woodcock near Gladwin, West Branch and Houghton Lake. Mostly State Land...

I hunt mainly the South Eastern State game areas: Port Huron SGA, Holly SGA, Ortonville SGA, Lapeer SGA, Cass City SGA, and Tuscola SGA....I usually find a pocket of birds or a honey hole every now and then to keep me coming back. I used to hunt the public access farms quite a bit, but unfortunately that progam gets smaller every year, so I also spend some time and money on the shooting preserves (about 1/2 dozen times/year). For ducks, there is no place better than Harsen's Island/St. Johns Marsh/Anchor Bay. Occasionally make a duck hunting trip to Lapeer SGA. Hoping the current cool weather prevents any further water loss on the marshes! Good luck and good hunting to all.
