After many discussions on these pages about rods (and the shortcomings of Ugly stix) I just got me a Johnny Morris Signature 85 Million modulus 6'6" Med/Light spinning rod. It is my first $100 rod (on sale at $69). Very very light. Hoping for great things this spring.
In upgrading a couple of reels I have a Daiwa Goldcast US80XD underspin and a Shimano IX 2000 rear drag reel (both spooled with 6# mono) that are available to a youngster (free). I'll even pay the shipping cost. They are in near new condition. If anyone here has a child or grandchild that could use these (perhaps for christmas), send me an email and I'll get them off.

They are nice rods. Just curious... why a Medium/Light? What do you plan of using it for?

Why not???
That Cumara you bought isn't exactly a winchin' stick you got - you catch fish with it , RIGHT?!?!
I have a Cabela's 7'6" ML IM6 stick that works excellent for live bait & tossing light baits and I really like it ( you don't think I just HORK every fish out of the water with 30# and the drag winched down , do you??).
:evilsmile
Those 12LB+ MA walleyes I got Jan. '07 on that memorable night out with Severus & Sixshooter were taken on 8LB Yo-Zuri Hybrid and a Med. 6'6" rod and a 2500 sized Daiwa reel , and a light drag settiing.
;)
Flash likes to catch about anything from the posts I've read and seems to like the "fight" more than the actual "capture" , shoot at least he's trying a darn nice rod out and you & I both know - - - going from an 00glY stEEk to a rod with a 85 Mil Mod rating - it's going to be like seeing for the first time when that first bite comes!
He'll probably buy something heavier for the big guns when he discovers how nice a higher quality stick can improve your results!
Nice choice Flash!!

Now Robert... don't read anything into it. I was simply asking what he was going to use the rod for. It was NOT a loaded queston! LOL!! I have a medium/light Croix that I like to bass fish with, and used it for whities a lot this year. But I wouldn't use it for a tourny! LOL!!
And yes, he's gonna love the feel of a quality rod for sure! :D

That actually was one of the questions I was going to ask you. What is the best application of this rod. I currently have a Shimano Solstace 4000 (rear drag) wrapped with 30# PowerPro on it. Like SWF says, I really just fish for anything that bites and it all goes back anyway, so I don't really target any particular species. But I suspect that plastics (which I've never caught anything on) would be a good application for this rod. Maybe some topwater Rapalas (Original Floaters) or perhaps even some in-line Mepps spinners.
What do you recommend?
Last year I tried the bullet nose sinker ahead of a 3/0 worm hook with a 7" purple w/ blue flake Gulp Turtle back worm a few times out, but never caught anything. I do like the weedless properties of this set up as the waters I fish get pretty weedy by summer. But my fish catching has been on stick baits.
eta - forgot to answer your question; they had 3 rods available on the clearance rack, 1 a 6' light, 1 a 6' medium, and this 6'6" med/L. I thought this would be the better of the 3 for my style of fishing - emphasizing versatility. It has 8 Titanium guides.

I'd say you could use the rod for all the methods you mentioned. What would I use it for? Well, it's light and sensitive... senkos would work, and sounds like a decent drop shot rod to me! :D I wouldn't throw anything too heavy on it... not the best jig rod for instance... or crank baits. Rapalas? Sure. Mepps? Sure! You should take a trip over here in the spring... and bring the rod... and we'll show you how to use it!
The 4000 reel might be a little big, but it will work.

SWF made a similar suggestion last year and I hope to do just that. At $1.48/gal (here anyways) that would be a heck of a lot better than the $4 we saw last summer.

Hay now, you guys, dont be doggin me Powel ML either:evil: it put a whoopin on that 4.8 at BPI, OUCH!
For me stating simply thats its a 6'6" Medium Lite dont really tell me the entire picture, ya know!
Is the action.....Xtra-fast, Fast, Med Fast, Med, med slow, slow! I mean all theses actions have their place! B
But I wouldent go dropshoting with a SLOW action, and I wouldent use a Xtra-fast for river eye's either:yikes: do ya feel what Im a sayin! lol

johny morris series are probably a fast action. probably make a decent drop shot rod. i like a 7'0" for that, but a 6'6" will do.
