I was standing on heron lake (northern oakland co) yesterday about 20ft out from the shore. it seemed like 'decent' ice
not clear but it was about 4 inches thick.
there was a lot of spots on the lake that were open water..
also a few other lakes in the area there was 'some walkable ice' but lots of open water
there was 1 small, shallow pond that someone was fishing but from talking to this dude he seemed REAL hardcore.
i need a real spud (i'm using electrical conduit or some kind of piping :( im broke)

Was out on Little 7 Lake today. 2 inches of white ice with 2+ inches of good black ice underneath. And the fish were biting like crazy! Brought up about 25 in about an hour. 10 were worth keeping. Pulled up a bass too.

Which one is that, if you don't mind me asking? I can never keep track of the lakes names, except i do know which one Big 7 is...

checked Hopkins lake and Manitou[private] in shiawassee county yesterday, both are locked-up but only 3" near shore. Lake Ovid at Sleepy Hollow also locked-up with 3.5-4" at the boat launch about 30ft off shore. Could see areas that had just skimmed in in the last day or so on all lakes. I personally like to move around a lot so I'll give it a few more days, next time I go out will bring the gear:chillin: Don

Little Seven is right next to Big Seven, to the east. It is sepperated by a causway. Not great fishing, but plenty of gills to keep you entertained.

Drove by Rush Lake in Van Buren Co. on Friday. The lake is locked up and there were 4 people fishing out of the PA. Will try to swing by and check ice in the next few days. Get ready to brake out the tip-ups.

Hit Oxbow last night. I'd be careful where you're walking, there are some extremely thin spots, but for the most part, it's about 3-4 inches.

i stood on big fish lake last night
i had to walk to the end of the dock(it's like half in), lower myself down slowly onto the ice (the shore was open water) and it didn't crack, so i started jumping on it
it held all my weight (130lbs, skinny, i know.) jumping up and down as hard as i can(I DON"T KNOW HOW THICK IT WAS BECUASE I DIDN"T HAVE A SPUD OR ANYTHING SO DON'T TRUST THAT IT IS SAFE JUST BECAUSE I SAID I STOOD ON IT)
and i THINK i saw a shanty out there.. but i couldn't tell if it was a resident who walked across the lake with a pop up or if it was a permanent shack that didn't go through
that's all i've got to report from lower genesee/northern oakland co

Was out on Pickerel Lake after a squirrel hunt. The ice was 3 inches or a little more, but I didn't venture to far from the PA. Was fun to drill a few holes. Careful in the Parking lot, there's more ice there than on the lake!

Just wondering if all the lakes still have good, safe ice on them. I will be fishing in the niles/dowagiac area next weekend and didn't know about the ice with all the snow and such. Any info would help. Thanks

There was a tourney there last Sat. They had nearly 200 entries. I'm gonna guess that the ice is pretty solid on most lakes in the area.
Any specific lakes your planning to hit?
I would think with the SuperBowl Sunday that most will be off the ice earlier than normal.

I have yet to find a lake that you can't get on. It's best to know the lake. There can be soft spots from spring wells and creeks. Some lake still have some water with snow on the ice. Best to have a spud.

i was out in Livingston county the other day and a spot had 2" of good ice. It was covered w' water, frozen slush and snow. I broke thru the frozen slush and thought I was toast. The good ice took two wacks w' a spud to get thru.
The snow on top has kept the ice from freezing like it should have with all this cold weather.

I was out on a lake 20 min or so from dowagiac last night. In some areas i found 2 to 4 inches of snow, layer of ice 1 to 2, layer of slush 4 inches, 6 to 8 inches of ice. In other areas i found 2 to 4 inches of snow, layer of slush 2 inches, 1 inch ice, layer of slush 4 inches, 6 to 8 inches ice. Make sure you take your spud, i left mine in the truck(big mistake). I ended up almost having water go over my boots in one spot so there are some spots that are still soft.

Mott Lake has 18" Top 10 is white, bottom 8 is black. I was about 50 yards west of the Genesee Road Bridge on the north side of the river channel in 12 foot of water. It's a tricky lake, so even with that, be careful.

Addison Mill Pond: Earlier in the week, Monday-Tuesday, the ice was around 12-15", but towards the end of the week, about 20% of the pond was consumed by water due to local flooding and the ice pack was reduced to around 8-10".
Although I haven't been on any other local lakes, the ice seems to still be looking fine, although I'd be aware of soft spots!

Satuday the 14th, Whitmore lake had 8 inches of clear ice
