BOWFIN YOU DUMBASS. Just got done checking ice, there was some flow ice that was still loose on upper lake. Lower was mainly open with the execption of the south end which had the same flow ice crap. wilson may be fishable by wednesday if we don't get a big wind.

Good one.......the Bowfin in that lake are 9# at birth, and only get bigger from there!

I was gonna check out Wilson tonite on my way home from work. I am hoping to get out next week, or next weekend. Wind, expect alot. Looked like the weekend was gonna be blowey. I am gonna call my mom and have her check out our little spot down there too, save me the drive. That is my goal for next weekend is to hit the first ice down there. Did you or Nut-ball mark that area we were setting up in last year?

Please use care on Hamlin Lake this year when fishing tip-ups and jigging for pike and walleye. Look closely and carefully let the undersize muskies go. Enjoy the pike and walleye.

What size range are those little guys going to be in by now? Any reports of them being caught this last summer? Would be nice to see a population of mature fish become established in the years to come.

Yes there are young muskie being caught. I have a friend that boated a 31" muskie this summer while fishing for walleye. The fish was a fantastic fight and beautiful colored fish with no trouble ID from northern pike. He practiced a fast C-P-R (Catch-Photo-Release) and is very excited for the future of Hamlin Lake. Hamlin Lake is one of the best all-around family fishing lakes in West Michigan.

I am all for seeing a population of muskies in Hamlin, but I am afraid that the Pike Spearing is going to take a toll on the Muskies. People are so used to just throwing a spear, not having to ID it. Especially when there was no size limit on the Northerns. Any 24"+ fish that resembles a northern will be skewered, and it is tough to release a fish that had 3 or 4 tines through its neck. Don't get me wrong, I love spearing. But people will need to be careful or spearing on Hamlin may go away. Alot of Musky lakes down state already have banned pike spearing.

Huh...thanks for the info Hamilton, great info! I didn't even know the DNR was planting Muskie in Hamlin...well since they stopped planting tigers back in the late 80's. I can see why the DNR had a no-size restriction on pike a few years ago.

Hamilton Reef
12-07-2008, 11:18 AM
The DNR acknowledged there would be a educational transitional period for all fishers as the muskie fishery develops. This is normal and the spear fishers should do fine. They have skilled eyes from hours of looking at the water and the marking differences between pike and muskie are contrasting. The Michigan Muskie Alliance has placed very nice educational KTD (Know the Difference) signs at the sport shops and access points. You are very lucky with a bright fishery future.

There are some guys on the south bayou gill fishing, lower lake is moderately skimmed, Wilson Parks ice looks crappy at best there was about 1.5inches and we got snow, do the math. wait a few more days and I will update again. Wilson is not safe in my humble opinion.

Did this last thaw hit up there too? In Northwest IN, it got to about 40 on Tuesday. It rained all day. I was wondering if it rained up in Ludington also. I was hoping for the weather to stay below freezing and build up a foundation. Keep me posted. Looking forward to hitting the lake.

wartfroggy
12-10-2008, 05:02 PM
No thaw, but we did get a about a foot of snow over a couple of days. Haven't been by the lakes to see how wet and slushy it all got. Hopefully there was enough wind to keep most of it blown off the lake.

yippe more muskie that about 50 guys per year will fish for, good thing those muskie will eat every stinkin bass in the lake lets see approx 30 bass tournaments per year on hamlin also lots of guys fishing for bass just for fun. so lets use there license fees to stock the lake full of muskie that eat all the bass bluegill perch and who knows what else this will be another dnr disaster. they have destroyed alot of lakes with muskie already i dont understand very few guys fish for them so whats the piont it just dont make sense

wartfroggy
12-11-2008, 07:11 AM
I'd have no problem seeing a reduction in the bass population on that lake. It is pretty much infested. Can't fish walleyes or pike without running into a bunch of bucketmouths

The bass fishing will not be harmed. Some bass complainers are not well educated and need to get over their NIMBY attitude. The more well balanced fishery will help the whole lake which is why the DNR, Hamlin Lake Association, MCWA, and others all support the great musky program for Hamlin Lake.

crazybass
12-12-2008, 02:12 PM
you mean to tell me i'm not educated because i'm a bass fisherman, i will garuntee you that as a whole bass fisherman spend more time and money in the state than muskie and walleye anglers combined. and by the way as far as planting a fish to balance a population is the most unaturaul method of restoring fish populations. The only reason that the dnr supports this is becuase its easy for them. whats wrong with slot limits. remember this is the same dnr that said we needed to restore the wolf population in the u.p. and everyone knows how well that has worked. better not hear you complain when in ten years you cant cacth any gills anymore because the muskie and pike ate em all. but hey the ten muskie fisherman on the whole lake will be happy.

Hamilton Reef
12-12-2008, 03:17 PM
The bass fishers need to educate themselves on fishery biology and muskie don't eat all the fish in the lake. The muskie were in the historal Hamlin Lake and they will help balance the lake to a more natural healthy fishery. The bluegill fishers already know that the bass are the #1 predators of their bluegill. The bass whiners don't own the lake so live with it.

1 muskie vs bass start your own thread
2 Hamlin besides south and north bayous are still very unsafe do to the heavy snowfall hopefully the winds this weekend will help remove all the damn snow so that we can get on the ice and catch whatever it is that we prefer to angle for.

On Upper Hamlin: It's been snowing and blowing all day, most of the day I couldn't even see the opposite shoreline. Maybe 7 - 9" of new snow since last night. Maybe 15 - 20" on the ground. I haven't been on the lake yet, but the snow drifts are almost covering our dock near shore. I'm sure there's less in the middle. I didn't see any quads or sleds out there today, but my folks said they did see sled tracks near shore the other day.

PERE MARQUETTE Sport Center reported two 20-plus pound pike were taken on tip-ups through the ice this week — one on Hamlin and one on P.M. Lake. Although ice was safe at midweek, heavy rain is expected over the weekend, which could make conditions change quickly. Anglers are advised to use caution. Most sources suggest waiting for four inches of clear, solid ice before venturing out. SEE THE Jan. 3 Outdoors page for photos of the big pike.

Actually, I just threw something up on the main icefishing page on this. Haven't heard alot, other than that he is in rough shape. Last I heard there had been some improvement, but he isn't out of the woods yet. Sounds like he got hit pretty hard. From the report I heard, they had to use the JAWS to get him out. Pray he is OK and that things go well for him. If I hear anything else, I will post on that thread.

Wilson Hill on Upper Hamlin and the South and North Bayou on the lower lake are popular icefishing spots. I'd keep away from fishing the boat launch area in the state park because the current rips pretty good through there.

Man it was cold as hell out there today. Without a shanty it was borderline miserable! still managed 10 fish before I just got to cold. I have made up my mind, I am making a shanty!

Bluegill limits reported at Hamlin
Perch slow in Pentwater

Location, location, location.
Its really the key to ice fishing. On Wednesday at Hamlin Lake, if you were too shallow or in a part of the lake that was too dingy, you could watch other people catch fish, but you werent going to get anything.

Chuck Reed of Onekama and Punk Kelly from the Greenville area were chipping away at their limit slowly but surely. They were in the group closest to Wilson Hill Parks boat launch.

Theyre not jumping out of the hole, thats for sure, Reed said.

Reed said the pair were using spikes. He got his limit in about four hours, while Kelly was taking a bit longer.

You know it really is to bad that the police and DNR write people tickets for parking in the street. I saw them out there when I was leaving. I admitt there was a crap load of people parked on the roads, however, there was no where else to park... the fishing on upper hamlin should NOT be on a first come first serve basis.. The parking lots will only hold so many trucks...

Jebavy is usually referred to as wilson hill or park. It also is called Barnharts which is right to the west of the launch. ;) I haven't heard any thing lately on the eyes on Hamlin, my main contact is still in the hospital. Decided to forgo my trip to pentwater due to poor reports and no other fisherman wanting to go. So i hit the crappie grounds on the upper lake from 8:30am to 1:00pm, ended catching eight or nine but only 1 was bearly big enough to keep. The good thing was i was marking good numbers and the water is get a little more clear. After lunch i hit the lower lake at the very south end for eyes and ended up landing two 1-18" and 1-17" and a few perch. probubly could have done better but i run out of blues and it seemed like that was all they would eat tonight. all action came in 24' useing a fire tiger jigging spoon with the glow back charged. hoping to get back out thurs evening if the weather permits.

If you can launch out of tamerac it cuts out a lot of walking. There is also an access point at the skinny park on lakeshore dr. Just past the south buyou it leaves about a 1/2 to 3/4 mile walk to the south end. There is also good fishing off the access at the north buyou. Though last weekend you could only see two foot down. Which makes for tough fishing, but things could be different now.

Hit the south end of the lake with my dad "rookie" for the evening bite, ended up 1 for 3 on eyes and 1 good perch. The 1 eye was barley a keeper, it came on a green glo rattling flyer with a perch minnow and a half. My lost fish was on a little silver buckshot a half minnow it looked like about a 17-18" eye. The fish my dad lost hit a glo perch jigging spoon with a half blue, the rookie got it to the hole and went to grab it gave it a little slack line and back it went for another day, he said it was about 20-22". he learned lesson #1 tonight no slack line allowed. I did mark alot of fish tonight but they just weren't hungry, i threw probubly 20 combos at them with only two bites for me, maybe tommarow they will be hungry.

I hit the 12 FOW in the morning and only managed a small perch and a 20" pike (they both went back in of course). Moved out to 20 FOW after lunch and caught one nice gill right off the bat then nothing else.

It was too cold and too much snow to move around much.

I agree oakley. I went North and just a little east of the launch at wilson hill park. Only went out about 200/250 yards before I tuckered out and decided to "fish where you drop". I got on the ice about 3 pm and fished till just before dark. Started to get a perch bite an hour before dark but couldn't hook up on just the one. I need to use smaller teardrops.

When I parked there was only about four vehicles in the main parking lot so we parked there. (NO TICKET!) I heard about the "enforcement" going on beforehand so was not going to park on the street.

The snow was bad. I fished all day from 8am until 6pm. I was the first truck in the lot and the last one out. There was an honest 12" of snow on my truck when I finally made it back. Thank God a couple of buddies came out to find me as I was heading back in and they helped me drag my jet sled back in. The snow was so fluffy that the sled would not ride on top of it so we had to pull the sled THROUGH the snow. After getting back to the cabin, a few of the guys said they got their quads stuck a few times trying to get back out. We had a heck of a time getting out to the main roads on Sunday. I haven't seen that kind of snow in one night for quite a while. Once the snow settles down it should be better walking. If the weather stabilizes a little the fishing should pick up too.

fished the ledge out in front of the north buyou to night with irishjigger, with limited success. we caught 0 walleye and 10 monster rock bass didn't even mark what i would consider a walleye. the one rock bass went 11" wow deffinitly the largest rock bass i ever caught. all in all it was alot of fun and the walk wasn't that bad. thinking of going smelting on crystal sat pm good luck to all fishing this weekend.

Thanks for a fun trip Tom. If they ever have a Rock Bass tourny I think we could make a run for the trophy. Like I said I head out sun and will be back middle of feb...I'll do some fishing out there and let you know how I do. Good luck in the next few weeks and I'll get ahold of you when I'm headed back this way!

wow, in all the times that I have fished infront of N. Bayou for eyes, never caught an eye through the ice there. Got into them a few times perch fishing the 40' flat between of South and Middle Bayou out in the middle of the lake, but that is too long of a walk so I haven't been out there in a few years!

Went out on the south end tonight and had decent action, fished the 24' honey hole and landed 1 - 14" eye, 8-10 throw back perch, and i lost a monster eye and my favorite fire tiger jigging spoon at the hole after a good 3-4 minute fight DAMM!!!!!! the line broke due to ice build up on tip during the fight, i would get it up to the top floor it nose would touch the ice and back down it would go, that happened at least 3 times before the line broke i would say it went 7-8 lbs. O well it will be bigger next time i just wish it would have give my spoon back. I also had a friend and his wife fish the steps over by by state park and they caught 1 pike 25" jigging, lost another at the hole jigging, and had three flags in about 2hrs before dark.

Caught 12 decent gills on Upper Hamlin this morning. Not the Big ones like early december though! One flag, but nothing there. Water color is good.

Stopped by a friends house yesterday after discgolf league. and he fished PM lake with a few other guys for perch and they only caught 8 8-10" perch in 4hrs between all of them. he also said their were a few others out that were not doing much catching either. hope the info helps.

Looking forward to get back on to the upper lake in the comming week! It's been about 3 weeks from the last time i fished up there. The south end of lower hamlin has been really good for walleye and perch, that action has been taking all my fishing time. But its time to chase the bull gills, paper mouths, and pre spawn walleyes of the upper lake. Over the past week i fished perch in pentwater and had phenomal day's fishing. Three days fished three limits of 8"-12" perch with the longest limit taking 4hrs. to gather (can you say whats for dinner) So i hope to get some more reports from that area posted thru out the next three weeks. And maybe even chat or fish with a few of yaw. :)

Where are you catching the perch?

We have a place in Tamarac and would like to try for some walleyes, any help or tips you can offer would be great.

went out today to do some scout fishing off the lincoln rd acess on upper hamlin looking for blue gill and crappie worked the south side of the lake from the middle of indian pete in 8' out to the drop off and along the weed edge east to barnhart store then went over to the point with all the crappie shanties. went thru a full tank of gas in the auger (at least 100+ holes drilled) ended up catching 11 8-13" crappie,3 8+" gill, and about 40 small perch. most of the crappie and all the gills came in 32' in just west of barnhart store. Going to make more swiss cheess tommarrow off wilson hill if anyone interested, should be at the launch at about 1:15 pm.:)

There's been 11,200 and some looks at this thread.:yikes: Amazing that your catching anything out of there. I remember fishing Hammy 7-8 years ago. That was one sweet lake back then. Still good now but nothing like it was when they used to do private plants.

My feelings are that the past 3 years of heavy pressure and mass harvesting of the pan fish has definetly taken its toll. I really noticed last spring, there were very few gills on beds or to be caught, 5 years back in the spring it was nothing to catch and release 700-1000 crappie along the shore lines, but last year i caught and released 114 in 18 trips from ice out till end of may. this past fall i fished 8 trips on hamlin for gills and got skunked 6 times, and i coverd alot of water. The only fish i think is thriving right now on hamlin is the walleye they don't get fished much and they plant alot of them and they like to eat. anyways that my 2 cent on hamlin.

Seems like I read this will happen with a robust walleye population.

went out tonight off wilson hill, and drilled some hole (25) and ended up finding a few gills and a real nice 20" walleye. fished the south side tonight and i'm going to hit the northside in the morning on the mudd flat to see whats roaming around out there? i've got a feeling there just might be some big gills feeding on fisious glow bug eye's tommarrow.

I haven't fished my shantie on upper in 2 weeks and by the lack of people up there it's going to lower today !!! Gonna try off partridge point for eyes, I'm sure it will be the only one out there. Getting a lakemaster card for the gps today, is it better to fish near drop offs in lower or flats ??? I was really hoping the crappie would start biting off lincoln but no luck so far from what I hear. Is anyone fishing in the Hamlin tourney sat ????

just got in from another cold morning of searching, ended up landing nine gills, 4 large mouth bass and a mess of little perch. most of the action came in 17' on the mudd flat strait out of wilson hill. I've come to the conclusion that the glow smerch fisious jig is a bass catching machine. it also does pretty good on the blue gill also.

Took the camera out tonight to see what i've been marking and not catching. Seen a few nice gills come thru before the sun got to low, and landed 9 smaller gills and 4 crappie. The blue gills came on a 5mm bright red fiskas epoxy jig tipped with 2 red magots, crappies came on a glo firetiger jigging spoon tipped with half minnow. I will say the night bite is much better than the morning bite right now. Tommarow am i going to hit the narrows and fish for someing big, at this time of the year alot of fish migrate past that area and it's a good opertunity for a trophy. anyways if anyone would like to fish up there i'm hoping to arrive there at 8:15am on the dune side of the narrows.

Fished saturday from 6 am to 3 pm on upper hamlin fished on the blue gill grounds off wilson hill and had great action the whole day working a couple pods of gills, landed about 50 but only a few had size. Hot bait was a 2mm yellow fiskas epoxy jig tipped with a red and white maggot. there were also a few small pike caught also on the south side shallows. Also would like to say good job to the guys who won yesterday, also good job to the guys who did all the organizing of this event.

(just enough fo dinner) thinking about hitting the blue gill grounds east of wilson hill tommarow am to see if any larger gills have moved in there since we got all that rain.also the water has cleared up with good visibility down to about 10'.

Went out tonight off wilson hill for blue gill and walleye 5pm to 7:00pm. Had a great night, fished two spots on the blue gill grounds east of the launch first spot 12' caught 6 small 4-7" gills on a yellow 2mm fiskas jig tipped with one maggot. Second spot 14' caught 13 good 6-9" gills and lost a really nice fish, rod #1 yellow 3mm fiskas jig with 1 1/2 maggots threaded on. Rod #2 dead sticking a 1/8th oz glow fire tiger jigging spoon tipped with a blue head. It was great weather also and the snow is not to deep for walking.
