This fall the early goose season will include the three counties bordering Saginaw Bay which have been closed since 1988. Saginaw, Tuscola and Huron counties and the Muskegon State Game Area have been targeted by the DNR for the early season to help control and reduce the resident populations.

Proposed dates are Sept. 1-15 in the lower penninsula and Sept. 1-10 in the upper. Bag limits in the new areas may only be for two birds a day and the 5 birds a day in all other areas. Final approval for dates and bag limits are expected at the Natural Resources Commission meeting this Thursday.

This is great news for hunters in these parts of the state. I've watched the Saginaw Bay flock grow over the last ten years and it's now estimated to number around 25,000 birds.

Gee! You mean those extra goose decoys I'm making might cmoe in handy this fall? Who'd a thunk it! Now if we can just get them to open the season during the regular waterfowl season, things would be darn near perfect!
