I had a previous post asking if anyone had hounds for sale. Thanks for the info from the guys who replied. My buddy is trying to make a decision. Now I have another question for you. Anyone ever use a beagle foxhound mix for hunting? If so how was it? There is one at the stanton animal shelter, and that is one of my buddys options. I would assume it would be a good mix to run with, but just wonder if anyone has ever had the oppritunity. Thanks

I'm sure it will run something, how well i have no idea. He probably should figure out what he wants to do with it first. Unless he's just looking for a pet.

He has enough "pets". He breeds somewhat of a rare breed of dog. I think they call them Native American dogs or something. Anyone ever cross train a hound on animals? Say for instance coon, yotes, bobcats? I mainly run rabbits, so I dont know too much about the others. I know that the drug dog I used to work with could find 5 different types of narcotics, alcohol, medication and gun powder. I would imagine you could do the same thing for hunting. It would just be harder to keep them of the stuff you dont want to run....deer for example.

If you are looking for a reliable hunting dog, buy from reliable hunting dog stock with lines developed for what you want....otherwise you are getting a pet that you are hoping you can train to hunt. You have NO clue what you are getting when you get a dog from a Humane Society in regards to gunshy, drive, etc...and you won't know, for about a month after getting the dog home.

I am by no means bashing humane societies, but you have to remember you are getting a used dog, and it's gonna have issues of some sort.

Is this a young dog/pup?If it is,should be no problem training it to hunt.My cousin had a bluetick beagle cross that was one heck of a hunter.Only ran rabbit's/hare's with'em.He really did well on the snow-shoe's because of the long leg's.
