After not seeing a deer on Saturday, and having an antlerless tag remaining, Sunday I sat in my Southwest Island stand. This has been the most productive stand on my property over the 8 years I have owned my place.
At about 8:45 I hear something behind me. I turn around and here comes a doe in from the neighbor's. As I stand up and reach for my rifle I get a better look at the doe and think, Oh no, are those antlers. I raise the gun hoping for a shot and, son of a gun, a yearling buck. At least a 4 point, I didn't look for brow tines, so he could have been a six. So I hang the gun back on the hook and watch the buck walk off toward the beaver pond.
Less than 10 minutes later I hear something behind me again. I turn around and this time here comes a big fat doe. No Skinny 1 1/2 year old buck this time. I pick up my .308 and look for an opening in the brush. When she hits the opening I stop her with a grunt and drop her in her tracks with a shot to the shoulder.
Now that is what I call a quality hunt, passing on a 1 1/2 year old buck and harvesting a mature doe all in less than 10 minutes.
Haven't had her aged yet, but she field dressed at 114 pounds. She matched the second heaviest doe taken from my property since I have owned it.
