I need a sled/rig/setup and since I'm a cheap bastard I'll prolly build it:lol:
But I'm not even sure what to look for or where to start.
I saw this one on Craig's List and it got me thinkin...

If you can find a 7 gallon bucket and either cut a notch in the lid or buy a half moon seat from Meijer or Kmart.
I've had a 7 gallon that held dog food. I think it is atleast 15 years old. I like it better because it is taller than the standard 4.5 gallon dry wall mud bucket and thus more comfortable to sit on.

I have an older wood model that holds some nice gear including a lantern for heat etc. However I quit using it due to weight. Pulling a bucket in a sled is pretty light and pretty cheap.

the old one in your picture is pretty heavy if you have any distance to walk. hopefully really heavy on your way back :chillin:
but a bucket can blow & roll away, so by careful. it's your choice.
most important thing is a real good pair of boots.
if you're real cheap, don't get a sled, just threw everything over your shoulder

All you need is a cheap plastic kid’s sled you can put your bucket seat and a bucket of poles and one other bucket or milk crate if you need it with what ever you need in it your lantern or flasher or something else it is easy to poll and light.

Kelly, if you ever get to the west side of the state I'll give you one free. I have a manufactured one that looks to be built real similar, even has a spot for your lantern that has a glass front. Been hanging around my garage for a bazillion years. I don't think it even has a scratch on it. I even have an old auger you can have free, its one of the old spoon ones, might need sharpening but heck thats all we had for years.......heck I might even have some old ice rods and/or tipups laying around you could also have.

KJ ,
I dunno if Fiji has access to any more skis , but he was looking to unload some FREE if memory serves.
They make pulling ANYTHING easier.
If you need any tips - I'm a good , cheap bastard...LOL
I've built some NASA qualified stuff in my day - I would have shown you my last power auger rocket sled , but the last visit up n0rF W/ Dann09 & uNcLe Milty saw it shredded from the blistering speed across Crystal Lake in Benzie.....behind Georges' Arctic Flamethrower.
Now I gotta get busy on the MKIII replacement!
:D
It WILL have X-Cntry skis on it!

Here's a pic of my dads old sled. He used it for many years. Its made out of 1/4" plywood and some 1x2's. Its light weight and he usually carried it but it does have some wood runners on the bottom. But most of all it's cheap! This sled has had hundreds of gills in it over the years he would put newspaper in the bottom to try to keep the slime from building up. Its about 18" tall and 28" long and it wouldn't take much to build one. I would give you this one if it were only a sled but it's one of my memories of my dad so I can't part with it. Good luck on the ice.

Wally...that's one heck of an offer. I get over there I'll shoot you a pm:D
SFW...sad part is I actually understood 90% of what you were talking about.:p
Hangin with Milty and Danno is a sure fire gauge if intellect and character so I'm not sure how I feel about understanding it but I get it nonetheless:lol:

There are quite a few plans for homemade stuff on the iceshanty.com site.
We also have a good homeade gear sticky here as well.
I enjoy building stuff so sometimes I save money, sometimes I don't, but I have fun anyway.
Here's some links to their inventions and homemade gear etc.

Robert, There isn't anything that you could build that would surprise me anymore.

How much does that thing draw? 20 Amps? Now all you need is a small generator to power the beast. ;)

Hey don't poke fun I made one of these babies and hands down been the single best piece of info i have ever received from this sight. keep them coming Robert, thank you very much for sharing!
P.S. I purchased a 10.00 canvus tool bag, the whole unit, the arm, my charger, tester, and few small tools fit perfectly in it for easy carry on and off the hard water

Robert knows I'm pulling his leg. I built something similar a few years ago before everyone had a Vexilar.

Thats cool but nothing beat the rocket sled Robert built to hold all his gear....I just call it the NASA rocket launching sled, well used to call it that because the last time I actually seen it it was in about 10 different pieces scattered across Crystal lake in Benzie county.......:dizzy: Seems the NASA rocket launcher reached warp speed and when it hit the sound barrier it suffered a catastropic failure, only good thing I think it was unmanned at the time. :evilsmile

ih772, i knew you were. I have been tickering around with making small fold up legs for the unit keeps it off the snow and brings it a little closer to my eyes. Trying to avoid bringing out another bucket to rest it on beside i know i would nock it over.

Kelly this is the box I'm talking about. If you don't come pick it up maybe you can use it's design for a pattern. Its 24 inches long, about 18 inches tall and about 9 1/2 inches wide. The only thing it really needs is a wider ski for the bottom, I was always gonna use/find some old kids snow skis and cut them down for it but never did.
It has glass on the left side of the box/picture and a removable expanded metal grate over it so the heat from the lantern can be used to heat your hands. The right side box with the flip cover has an oblong hole in the side as the picture shows so you can just slip your gills in without even having to stand up. The middle box/slot is made to hold your rods and it even has a flip handle in that slot that flips out if you want to carry it instead of dragging it with the rope.
I was going to make a new box a few years ago but was going to make it about twice as wide and about 10 inches longer.
Hope this picture helps some..........as I said you're more than welcome to it.
Good luck.

I'm open for debate...LOL
Yeah , it just has the standard 12V/7AH Gel Pac like your garden variety Vex.... I'm sure Ian has seen the back side shot of this contraption as you have George.....
Speaking of George (DANN09) was the closest one to seeing the NASA Rocket Launcher implode , but he was watching where we were going , he only knew something was awry when I said "UH OH!"....
If only I'm have released the rope when it took that tip forward and the fateful bounce of death.....
I got some X-Cntry skis I have already cut down and fabbed new parts for a newer , faster more powerful Nitr0 MethanE powaH fueled top secret NASA Rocket Launcher sled to harness the StrEEEEEr!KeMaster Mag III to....

I've got one OD. I will look at it tomorrow and see what the bottom is like. I bought a truck load of ice stuff on e-bay last year, and this was with it, and I haven't used it. We don't live far from each other you can come over and look at it.
