Just wondering about the fake weed strands on the market. They look like they might work under certain circumstances. They also look like they would be a lot of hassle with thick ice conditions and constant moving around. Has anybody actually tried them yet and what is their opinion of them?

Haven't tried them yet but I did get into a lot of trouble when I stole a whole pile of the green plastic leaves my wife had on her arts/crafts table.......got busted before I could attach them to the rod I had just for "my special" arts/craft project...........:lol::lol::lol::lol:

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. The wife is at work and I'm busy cutting up pieces and parts of her plastic fern leaves and figuring a way to attach them to a braided line. The Weed-Ez product sells for $20 a set and I figure I can make them for free from all the junk my wife has stored in boxes. How deep of s--t did you get in? Any tips on how to hide the evidence from my wife?

Trouble not too much, I just got a lawyer and filed for divorce......really too bad it wasn't just about some stupid leaves......:dizzy::rant::sad:

I like the braided line idea a lot, how about some old dacron tipup line, that'd work also........

I figure I'm only going to be about knee deep and I've weathered that storm many times in the past so I'm not to worried.

I'm using some old duck decoy line that I had laying around. The leaves I'm using have a wire center so I just parted the line and threaded the wire through the middle and twisted it around to hold it. Now we just need some safe ice so I can try them out.

My idea would be to plastic zip tie the weeds to a piece of stiff wire (lawn sings) that has a decoy weight at the bottom (to keep it in place) and bend a loop in the top of the wire.(for line)

I'd like to find someone with a spearing shanty set up in about 10fow and try a few of them and actually watch how the fish react, and how fast it would take...........like a strand of them in each corner of the spearing hole.....

That sounds like a good idea Wall-eye. I plan on using them on Higgins lake and Lake Margrethe for perch. I usually fish in 10-40 FOW the weeds there are just bottom cover so I was going to circle the shanty with them and use my vex to see what happens. I think its worth a try... they were free so what the heck. During the thin ice time it shouldn't be to difficult and if they work I will use them during the thick ice season as well. They might even work on walleye.

It's funny... this time of year when everyone is getting ansy waiting for ice we all just sit back and conjure up new ideas as to how we are going to put more fish in the bucket or at least I do.

I made some and tried them last year in an area that doesn't have any weeds but walleye still cruise through. Every time I tried them I didn't see any walleye, so I quit using them. When the fake weeds weren't there, I'd catch fish.

They may be good on Higgins for attracting perch.

I tried them with NO luck as well, in fact 3 times. SKeeter

Only tried them once, when I was with someone else who had them. Same results as Skeeter

Sounds to me like they are a bust. Glad I didn't pay anything for the ones I made.

i would say that is probably a bust of an idea i don't hear of people raving about any success stories

I am going to try the fake weeds this year on muskegon lake. I went to Jo-Ann fabrics and bought some leaves on sale last year and made my own. I will see if it attracts the fish any better.

I made my own last year and tried them three times. Each time I had my camera with me to watch what was going on and to be honest if you are fishing for pike these things are great the pike will settle right down and will keep coming back to the weeds. I caught way less panfish than I normally did because the darn pike kept chasing them away. So my answer would be they work great if you want to fish for pike but other than that leave them at home. I noticed no difference with walleye they just acted looked at my bait and then swam by
