I'd appreciate any advice folks may have regarding ice fishing near Rapid River. I am trying to put together a fishing trip up there for late January 09. We usually go to Simcoe, but wanted to try something new.
Our group will probably be 5-9 ice fishermen and I'm still not sure where we will lodge. We'll be using ATV and snowmobiles with portable shantys.
I've sent a couple of emails to the local outfitters, but they haven't replied. I know the Walleye fishing should be good, but also want to get some Perch. I've never fished the area, only been there for hunting.
Thanks!!

I would recommend contacting sallmar resort located right there in Rapid River. The Lee brothers are some of the most knowlegeable anglers in the area and are always willing to give advice on current conditions and fishing spots. They have motel rooms and also an apartment that can be rented that has a stocked kitchen and living room along with separate bedrooms. Fish cleaning facilities, groceries, and bait are also available at there party store right outside the motel rooms. Maybe we'll see you up there!

Went up to bay de noc a few years ago and the walleye fishing stunk. It can be really hit and miss up there. I probably will not make a return trip as I think Saginaw Bay would be much better and its alot closer to home. BTW, we went in late January. I was told the closer you get to the season closing the better the walleye fishing gets.
Good luck, I hope you slay the walleye up there.

Is a good place to stay. But I too have been there and if your going for numbers its not the place to go but if you want a wallhanger its one of the best places.Walleyes are few and far between but big when you get them.we went for one day and landed a six pounder and was broke off by a big one and only hits we had from sun up to fter dark but I did have a good time.

PM sent regarding guide recommendation.
It's hard to say how the perch fishing will be this winter. Last season, it was good for big fish, but numbers were way down from the year before. Perch fishing near Butler's Island was pretty good this fall, so that's a good sign.
As mentioned, the walleye bite here is usually best at sunrise and sunset. Most fish are caught jigging, and electronics are a must have. Try to get away from crowds if possible. The last couple years, the bite has been pretty good in late January. Released my personal best 32 incher late January 2007.

It's not as easy as dropping a line and catching a wall hanger, but if you put your time in and work a little, you'll run into some quality fish up here eventually.
Swing by the shop if you get a chance. We'd be happy to point out a few spots on the map to get you started. Good luck this winter.

It was ONLY a 32 incher. Nothing to get too excited about. Why are you looking at my eyes, anyway? You should be looking at the fish:lol: That picture was taken with my old digital. Don't know what it was about the flash on that thing, but my eyes are closed in 75% of the pictures it took using the flash.
Here's another pic of the same fish taken on my buddies camera with my eyes open. The fish just looks bigger in the 1st pic. That's why I like that one better.
