Just before gun season I took my beagle out. It was her first trip this season. She only opened on one reabbit and it was shot.
Good luck to you when you go out.

Had a good run around the yard Saturday and Sunday. I had to guard the ditch so the rabbit wouldn't jump it and the dogs had fun. Yesterday the rabbit didn't want to run as far and went under the shed. The youngest one dove in there and dug at that rabbit till it ran out. He had to dig himself back out to find it holed up in the ditch bank. He wasn't happy and wanted to dig it out again, I had to carry him away as he didn't want to give up. Gotta love determination like that. Won't be long now :)

We havn't been out yet. We've got a pup that needs to get started, and we want to keep him going good once we start him, so we're waiting untill deer season is over. The only other thing we have to run is Danny, and he's getting up there in age. We did just buy a female from Missouri, she'll be here mid-December. She's a finished dog, can't wait to see how she does up here. Looking forward to getting them out!

I'm planning on getting out next weekend somewhere. I've been knocking on doors and making some calls. Trying to find some new places that hold alot of bunnies. All of the deer and turkey hunting spots hold a few bunnies, bu it would be nice to find a couple of hot spots.

Good luck to everyone.

Both of my beagles are still pretty new to it, but I was very impressed. This is one of my beagles second year, and the other I dropped of at a pen a week ago. When I dropped her off she had no clue of what was going on. I planned on leaving her there for 2 weeks, but she ended up going in heat so I had to get her early(didnt want pups yet). Plus she is just over a year old. Well long story short. They ran 7 rabbits. The "new to the game" beagle actually jump and ran two by herself. I was pretty suprised. I had a couple come within feet of me. They were moving pretty slow through the thick stuff. I didnt shoot any because I wanted the beagle to get as much running in as they could.

Looks like the bunny running will be on hold for a while weve got about 12 inches of snow the last 2 days will be a while before they will run:rant::rant: Man I hate snow would rather run on bare ground.

Ron and I got 6 bunnies over saturday and sunday. Only ran for a few hours each day due to not having Benny out as much as we would have liked before the season....came across some pretty shady hunters insisting that we had there dog running with ours......so that day we ended our hunt short due to stupidity but all in all it was a great weekend to hunt. I am pretty used to hunting in huge blinding snow storms. LOL

Ran today for one and a half hours, ran the first to the hole the second was a tricky little devil ran under the brush and then on top when the dog would run on the top the snow would cave in and the tracks were gone but the dog worked itout and I got the first one of the season. The only reason I shot that one is that my pup hasn't had the taste of one yet now she has and I think she likes it.lol The last one was a good run and the rabbit went by me twice before in went in a brush pile and I pulled the dogs off I hope it is just a taste of whats to come.

We went out Saturday morning and got one, the only one that ran. Sunday I didn't take a gun and they ran one by me 3 times before holing up (no gun with me). Monday night they jumped one and ran it around and around, that thing wouldn't hole up, I finally had to drag the dogs off after dark (again no gun).

I have never ran on bare ground. Thats why my beagles are 35 pounds and 15 inches plus to get through the deep snow. I am hoping all the snow up here will keep the muzzleloaders home so I can get out this weekend.

I dont worry about the size of the dog cottontails wont run if the snow is 2 deep. Once it crusts over and they can stay on top they will run. After a bunch of fluffy snow it takes several days before they can get there trails down then they will run on them but most of the time they find the first place they can to hole up.

I agree RRB, this is why I prefer to run hares. If you can bump one they will ususally stay up and run. For table fair I prefer the cottontail, as far as running the hare wins everytime. I also agree that running on bare ground is better before the leaves all fall off of the trees. But with coaching, duck hunting, hunters safety and everything else I seldom get a chance to run on bare ground. But once the snow falls my blood gets to boiling about running.

I agree, deep fluffy snow they're not far from the hole and will go there fast when jumped. Last year was the first for my dogs and hare, that was fun except the snow was really deep for us.

Wasnt paying attention to where you where from riverroad. Just assumed you where up north chasing hares when you where complaining about snow. When the snow is deep and fluffy, trust me it gets hard for the dogs to go.

Could probably hook you up. But you would have to come north. You guys in Baraga have to many of those wolves. Off from school next week, couple of my females are in season, may be able after the new year.

Hell my friends down state won't come north, yea timber

Have a tritronics system. Have been using for the last month or so. She comes well with just a tickle normally but the deer ran with her brain. If she takes off on deer again should I give full power?

Thanks

As long as she knows the come command, this is what I do:

Yell, stimulate
if no response in a couple seconds,
increase power, Yell and stimulate
Make sure she can hear you and repeat
It may take one good jolt to get her attention.
Praise her when she ccomes back to you and never let her know that youare the cause of it, let her associate it with the deer. My oldest has it figured out, he's very smart but he minds and never has chased a deer.

You may want to take it easy and get her on a couple of rabbits first, maybe even a runnning pen. Then set her up by taking her to a place you know you will encounter deer.

My dogs will now run a rabbit track through a deer bed and I don't have a worry in the world. I use the collars now for roads and over possesve mororns that are afraid my dogs may leave tracks on their property.

Ran my beagle 2 weeks ago and got two up but didnt get either. That day was more of a get the dog out and let him have fun day than a serious hunting day.
Went out again last saturday w/ my dog and another beagle. Jumped 7 and shot 4. The other beagle is probably 50 lbs!! She's twice as wide as mine is! Plods along and tracks great, but definitely a slow hunter.

Took off after a deer for the first time this past Sunday. I cant afford collars right now, so I was chasing them on foot. Ended up chasing them a mile back into some private land. I was so ticked!!!!!:rant::rant: Well I say they ran a deer but I never saw it. Maybe they kicked up something else. All I know is when I finally caught them, I dragged them back to the car and they were done hunting for the week.

If you don't have any older dogs to run the young dog with, I recommend finding a starting pen. It is the fastest way to imprint that instinctual drive to find rabbits in a young beagle. Having this drive is critical before taking a beagle out in the woods. A shock collar helps to break them from running trash, but if the young dog isn't imprinted with what its supposed to be running it will become confused and disheartened. Next best option is place with a lot of rabbits and no deer (if you find such a place in Michigan, let me know!). Just be careful about shocking a young dog, especially at such a young age. You do not want them to be terrified out in the woods.

Don't know how tight things are for you financially, but I figured I'd let you know that The Collar Clinic has a lot of discounted shock collars and refurbished collars at pretty good prices. They're up in Traverse City. Maybe you can find something to help you out.

Yea they are expensive. Might want to check e-bay too. I sold my old set of tri-tronics beagler collars and transmitters on e-bay last year for $175.00 to upgrade to their trashbreaker with more range ($450.00). I worry about my four-legged buddies so!

We hunted saturday in the very deep snow and Benny got 3 running and we shot 3. All in all it was a good day but very very cold....the dog was pretty pooped from the deep snow. You could tell under the pines where the bunnies burrowed under the snow but that did not stop the ole dog----he was on to them. LOL

Hopefully it warms up a bit next week and the snow settles.....easier for us to run and the dog as welll.
