I was out rabbit hunting in October and my beagle started barking like she was on a hot bunny trail and took off 30 yards in front of me. She flushed a woodcock back over my head and then stopped barking and didn't continue tracking. Anyone ever had their beagle signal on a bird? Anyone ever trained their beagle to bird hunt? Just thought it was kind of weird.

Alot of beagles will run birds.
I've got one that will run birds , rabbits , and tree squirrels. Depending on where you hunt him.
In the fields , pheaseants.
In the hardwoods , squirrels.
In the brushy stuff ( Christmas trees ) , rabbits.

I have a beagle that will flush pats, one bark and they are yusually in the air. The only thing is I have to beat him to the bird or he will have a snack.

I've had 2 beagle's and both of them would track/run pat's,pheaseant and of corse, rabbit.I've been told that some beagle's will run cottontail's but not snow-shoe,anyone know if that's true?I did'nt start running snow-shoe with my current dog untill he was 6-7yr's old and he ran'em no problem.

They both ran extremely well on pheasant. They would get all excited but & run the track but would not open up. One of them would "yip" occasionally but only on roosters! Both were alway quiet when running partridge & neither would run or even pay any attention to woodcock dead or alive. I guess each one is an individual though. I wouldn't be surprised they could be good on almost anything that leaves scent. John H.

From what I've heard bird's scent is quite strong and it's easy for them to run. My oldest has run pheasant and turkey. The youngest one likes squirrels. I've seen them pass right by woodcock but they have run grouse before. Since the runs are usually short I really don't care and when they're on a rabbit, they're very loyal to the track (won't switch mid run).

I was curious if my dogs would run hare after only doing cottontails and they did fine last year.

you don't have to train them to hunt,,,,its what they do. and they will hunt and not really care whats at the end of the trail. rabbits are a special treat for them because they get to chase , and run , and feel the wind lifting their ears.... as close to doggy heaven as they can get.Has anyone ever trained a beagle to hunt anything?
