A solid 3 inches is good for me, that way if I venture on 2.5 inches no big deal. Generally thought I use 3-4" as a rule. I wouldn't be getting too excited just yet. We've had skim ice this time of year, and then haven't gotten out until mid to late January. Not trying to be pessimistic, I just don't want to get my hopes up.

I'm gonna venture out tomorrow, Hoping to see an inch and a half. If it breaks, I come home. If it holds me, I fish. Keep in mind this is only 3 or so ft of water and a pretty good solid bottom. I wouldn't go on deep water without 3-4 inches.

3" minimum, even then it can be less than an inch thick in spots. Risky!

I go out with and inch and a half. But I dont weight mor than 170# soaking wet and wear a size 12 shoe.;) But I always wear a life vest on first ice. Looked out the window this morning and the entire lake is skimmed over.

Made the drive to the honey hole, usually if there is ice on the ponds around here there will be enough ice there. Apparently something is different this year no ice at all on the lake and in the canal there was still spots with open water about 2 ft across. Needless to say we turned around and went home. Might try to get on the canal tomorrow.
