I grew up ice fishing with my grandfather, after he died 20 years ago i never ice fished again. I got back into ice fishing again a few years ago, but only perch. I would like to get started hitting the walleye's, but I really dont know what to use on the hard water. I will be mostly on St Clair this year. Any tips on equipment, depth, technique, or even a good location would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for you help

Walleye on St Clair in the winter have always been hit or miss for me. Probably 'cause I don't really target them. I can get a few a year by throwing something flashy down after dark or as the sun sets. I have a Red Eye spoon that has worked for me in the past. And if I have minnows I will put a few of them on too.
Good luck and let us know how ya' do!:corkysm55

Like Mark said the Walleye on St. Clair can be hit or miss.Try getting ahold of some Jigging Rapalas and some do-jiggers and tip them the head of a Shiner and jig them just off the bottom. If you really want to get into some Eyes you need to head to the Saginaw River or Bay.If you hit the Bay you will need a 4 wheeler or snow machine being they usually are out a ways, sometimes 7 miles give or take. The river is much easier being you only have to walk out a short distance.Just please use extreme caution when fishing the river, you can have good ice in one spot and 1 " in another, especially in the early and late part of the season. There is some hog Catfish in the river too, I have hooked into a few and I thought I finally had the wall hanger only to find out it's a 10-12 lb Cat.

You will need to target the 10 -15 fow to get into walleye on the ice. The most accessible spots to do that are the crocker rd. launch ginos and the 400 club. The bad side to it is that is deeper because the north channel current sweeps through there. causing deeper water near shore, which also causes the area to freeze later then most spots. early season walleye are hard to come by. You can get into a few here and there in the 10 fow out from crocker early ice, but nothing consistant.

I've noticed that there is usually very little information posted up at this site regarding ice fishing Brest Bay. Either its a well kept secret or the fishing isn't as good as Lake St. Clair. Anyone have any info on it? Its a heck of alot closer than Saginaw Bay. But then again, maybe thats why theres so little info.

I will be fishing it hard this year just like always. Especially now that a good friend has an airboat. If im lucky he will take me out so i can show him where the fish are. We got into them a little last year once the water cleared up but then the ice blew out.

But when they do it can be comparable to fishing off the reefs down in ohio. I've seen up to 13 lbrs come out of the ice right next to me. my personal best is 11

I really need to find a buddy with a 4 wheeler so i can get in on that action! I'm not really a big fan of a 2-3 mile walk.

Brest Bay is located on Lake Erie just below the Erie Metro Park. I used to fish there way back in the late 60's early 70's but that was during the summer and for perch. After posting my post above, I did a search for Brest Bay (something I should have done before posting it) and found there were quite a few posts concerning the ice fishing there.

Do you have to go out 2-3 miles to get the Walt's in Brest Bay?
I have fished Estral Beach before. Quite a while back...maybe 15 years or so and I used to do pretty good and would only have to walk a few hundred yards and I was good to go.

If thats the case, then being that its a whole lot closer than Saginaw Bay, I think a few trips there are in order this year. As I mentioned in one of my posts, I haven't fished there in many years so I need to ask, any bait shops in the area?

I believe Brest Bay Marina is open, there's also Bottom Line Bait & Tackle on Jefferson in Rockwood and The State Park Party Store at the enterance to Sterling S.P.
