View Full Version : Don't let this happen in your shanty

This happened to me today, and scared the sh** out of me. I didn't tighten the tip enough, and had a leak, and when I tried to light it, the whole thing burst into flames. I was in my barn, and didn't know what to do other than run. So I grabbed the tip with a pair of channel locks, and headed for the door. After I threw it outside, I got a towel and wrapped it around the top, and smothered it. I only lost some hair on the back of my hand, but I'd hate to have it happen while I was in my shanty.

I know its no laughing matter, but a few years back up at shantyville, A few guys started screaming, we looked out our shanty only to see flames coming out the side :yikes:. Needless to say it was later on in the evening as you would think, and 3 guys came running like little girls out of that thing... I was laughing so hard when I found out everyone was ok ... Man I will never forget that night, as I suspect they will not either

Glad to hear you're OK.

P.S.
I hope that was a telephoto lens you shot that with. I don't think I'd have been that close! :)

Thats nothing have you every seen carb cleaner or de-icer lit on fire.
If you have dumb friends it pretty good entertainment as long as you are
not near them. But im guessing you guys are on the older side:evilsmile and you dont light things on fire for fun anymore

I don't think he was in his shanty. He was in his barn. I think the moral of the story is to make sure that if you're using a propane appliance in your shanty you better make sure that the connection is tight. Many people do use propane heaters and lanterns in their shanty and if the connection is loose, the very same thing could happen in the shanty.

I've had that happen,,, TWICE!!:yikes:

First time, it was me and buddy in the shanty on one of the coldest days in history of MI. The zippers were frozen on the shanty and we couldn't get out,, luckily my buddy figured out to just,,,, shut the gas off.

Second time,, it was my lantern,, and it basically blew up in my face. Roasted my eyelashes and both hands. Somehow I managed to throw it out of the shanty,, but it only made it like 4 feet.:yikes: I had to get out and kick it across the ice to get it away from me. Scary sheeeeeeeeeet. :(

Thats why i got rid of the tank lanterns and use the dual fuel, also save you money in the long run and dont have to carry tanks
