First off I would like to thank Ernie Richardson of Richardson's guide service. He is a great guy and guide who knows his land, his deer, and loves huntin'!
I am 27 and have been deer hunting since I was 14. I have always went up north with my Grandpa in the Baldwin area. Earlier this year he started developing early alzheimer's. Unfortunately his hunting days are likely behind him, but our memories are not. We rarely saw deer but it didn't matter. Ok, so the deer story:
I was hunting a cut bean field on the edge of standing corn facing woods that jutted into the field about 200 yds out. Opening morning I was in a different spot and only saw a lone doe. Saturday earlier we just saw a herd of 10-12 does. At around 2:30 or so I see a deer apear alone out of nowhere about 30 yards from the woods (200yds ish from me). I got on the two way radio and let Ernie know he was coming in. Ernie was on the other side of the woods. The deer walked in behind him at about 30 yards. Instead of take him, ernie hopped out of his blind and scared him back to me. Knowing the exit routes dear use on his property, and that I was sitting right by one. He banged on the blind door and scared the deer and two-wayed me back letting me know he was heading my way. I saw him haulin' butt out of the woods dead straight at me. 200 yds and closing. When he got to about 75yds I decided I had to take a shot. I missed and he turned broadside and ran on a diagonal in my direction. I shot at him running and missed again. He was approaching the corn in a hurry, so I pulled my 28" vent rib barrel out of one popup blind window and into the last one I had open, led him by about 2 feet or so, and said a prayer when I squeezed. Boom! The deer somersaulted and was done. Somehow I hit him! To this point I didn't know how big he was. As I walked closer after calming down I started counting the points. By the time I got up to him it was 10. 10 points with a broken G2, so technically 9. Hell of a first deer.
It wouldn't have been possible without two way radios, teamwork, and Ernie's unselfishness and willingness to pass up a nice buck so I could have a chance at my first deer!
Thanks for reading and letting me share.
