Last season the shell limit on Harsen's Islands managed area was 18 shells (15 in some areas). The idea was if the number of shells is limited, it will reduce sky busting. While I feel the managers of the area are well intentioned, I still saw lots of skybusting, esp. on bluebird days. 18 shells averages out to 3 shells/bird. This doesn't include the one or two that are dropped into the water and lost, the one or two (or more) that are used to finish off cripples (if you are conciencious....I saw one group of dogless hunters let a cripple swim away without making any attempt to kill it; I presume that they were saving thier precious shells for other birds), nor does it take into account the one or two used to take that rooster pheasant, coot, or merganser that flys overhead. Also, not every hunter out there is an Olympic class shooter....some of us just plain miss! Are the other managed areas limits this ridiculous? What next, limiting everyone to 6 shells per hunt? I think that a more reasonable number would be 25 shells. Any thoughts, comments, ect? I'm curious to see if I am alone on this one. The area managers don't seem to care what I have to say.
