Howdy all, I have but 1 question but it has technical aspects, ya rite me technical he he he:lol:
Anyway I have an older outboard motor, an 1990 Mercury Blk Max 175Hp 2.4 litre 20", Now it has the oil injecton system intact, all sensor's work, and its adjusted according to the book, but the dang thing smokes like CRAZY.:yikes:
So i hear its a good idea to remove the oil injection , fail safe ya know, sounds reasonable to me!:help:
Now heres the QUESTION: Once removed and its time to add oil to the gas, do I go with the standard 50-1, or 60-1 or even less?
The reason I ask is the CD in pdf format manual says the injector's run at 100-1 at idle , and only reach 50-1 at WOT, if I run 50-1 oil, seems like it will smoke even worse then it does now? unless im running WIDE OPEN all the time? or maybe the injection system is just messed up? causing the current smoking problem?
Any help would be appreciated!

Carl, normally I'd say ditch the pump and mix it yourself as I don't really trust pumps (had a snowmobile engine blow up due to an oil pump failure... and we were no where NEAR the cabin at the time!). But since you're varies the mixture according to RPM you should probably just stick with the pump.

alot shops would recommended taking off the early oil injects due to pump issues even if they were bought new

My 1996 johnson had the VRO system. it was only supposed to run 100:1 at idle as well. VRO stands for something variable something oil.

Anyway we pulled the external tank and premix our own oil. I mix 60:1 and have for years without an issue.

Just seemed logical that if it's only 50-1 at WOT that a good premix would be 60-1, Thanks for the help

We are dealing with a burned piston on our Polaris quad (oil pump went bad) and we will rip the auto ingection off after they pay $950 to bore and replace rings and piston. This is a common problem on Polaris as the pump is made from some type of plastic not metal. I personally know of 3 of these failures. 60-1 sounds like a great plan with the removal of the auto injection system.

This is an area where many people have different opinions. Being a mechanic I would say leave the injection system because of the fact that its variable. Your concern of smoking is not going to get better, it may get worse if you remove it. Right now there is a 100:1 ratio at idle, if you premix it you will be 50/60:1 which could cause smoking and fouling out plugs. One thing to be concerned about is the gear for the oil pump, those mercurys did have problems with them stripping out and causing a pump failure. If you have a manual look to for an adjustment. There are two little lines, one on the pump arm and one on the pump, they should be aligned. That may be part of your problem. Another thing to do is start to run mercury's synthetic or synthetic blend, I have seen that clear up some smoking issues.
