On the Rifle I have found browns in most deep holes where there is structure or overhangivng banks which provide food. It usually did not matter where I was on the river in past years as long as the canoes were not running. The liveries are closed this time of year.

I heading up to the Rifle this weekend and would appreciate any info anyone can provide me on steels/browns. I plan on fishing between 55 and Sage Lake Rd. while my buddies are out deer hunting. I have fished the river some in this area with good success on small rainbows (I assume steelhead smolt) during the summer but am looking to get into steelheading and figured this might be a possible weekend now that my freezer is full of venison.
