Simple reply is the highest capacity you can reasonably afford to install. Like the question about what size trolling motor should I install? More is better in most cases. IMO... No one will ever say, "I wish I had installed a smaller one..."

Not less than 500 gph. Check out the Rule pumps... up to 800 gph they are all the same size (meaning the outlet hose is the same). All the round ones use the same base, so should you ever have a problem with one you don't have to replace the base... just the pump.
