Never been on the Au Sable. Curious how far up a guy can fish for salmon? Are there any damns that I should know about? I am looking for any information on the entire river but more specificaly from Mio to Grayling. I am used to other side of the state and might try something new.

THANKS!

Salmon do not reach Mio or grayling. They, along with any other fish that run up the river, stop at Foote Dam, which is way farther downstream of the river.

Salmon and Steelhead cannot pass Foote dam, which is just west of the city of Oscoda, and is approximately 10 miles upstream of the mouth. All fishing for them is from the dam to lake Huron. It is a pretty river, but doesn't get the numbers returning that it once did.

Up near Mio, and Grayling, the river is more of a wading river. You can put in at a public access, and wade far up or downstream, fishing for Trout. Browns should be getting ready to spawn, as well as the few Brookies that might be around. Rainbows will be putting on the feebag, as well as their colors.

Foote dam is quite a drive from Grayling. Not quite as bad from Mio, but still probably close to an hour.

PM me if you would like some decent areas to try for near both grayling and mio. but like has been said, for salmon and steelies your're gonna have to go a little over an hour down stream.
