Water Pump problems

Hey guys, I just bought an Evinrude 15 hp (e15resr) and the water pump indicator (the pisser) isn't working, there's a little bit of air coming out but no water. Any suggestions on what the problem might be and how to fix it, I understand the water pump may be bad but any other suggestions?

Could be plugged with dirt, spiderwebs, etc.

Or blow it out with compressor while you are running it ,don't let it over heat .Bud

You might want to try one of those tools that hook up to a garden hose and clamp on the motor over the water inlets. I have'nt seen them around here, but saltwater outboards have to be rinsed out with fresh water every time. I'm sure you could find one on the net, and they are'nt very expensive. Even without the engine running, water should come out the pisser. If it does'nt, it's a clog. If it does, then it's the pump or the pump's impellar. Usually it's just the rubber impellar, which can easily get dry and brittle in Michigan's changing temperatures. The impellar is an inexpensive repair, but getting to it is'nt always easy.

Thanks, guys. After doing WAAAAY more searching than I wanted, I found out that the pee-hole thingy getting plugged up is pretty common. So, first I will make sure that it is not plugged, and then I will change the impeller. Thanks for the help!

I agree with checking for a clog in the line between the pump and the telltale (pee hole). Wire can work but I used to cut off a piece of weed wacker line and use that. It works well and it's stiff enough but also flexible enough to get through the line. I tried wire one time and had a hard time with it and then I tried the weed wacker line and it worked great.
