Obama to Plumber: My Plan Will 'Spread the Wealth Around'

Barack Obama tells a plumber in Ohio he wants to "spread the wealth around," eliciting criticism that his economic recovery plan is socialist in nature.

Barack Obama told a tax-burdened plumber over the weekend that his economic philosophy is to "spread the wealth around" -- a comment that may only draw fire from riled-up John McCain supporters who have taken to calling Obama a "socialist" at the Republican's rallies.
Obama made the remark, caught on camera, after fielding some tough questions from the plumber Sunday in Ohio, where the Democratic candidate canvassed neighborhoods and encouraged residents to vote early.
"Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn't it?" the plumber asked, complaining that he was being taxed "more and more for fulfilling the American dream."
"It's not that I want to punish your success. I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that they've got a chance for success too," Obama responded. "My attitude is that if the economy's good for folks from the bottom up, it's gonna be good for everybody ... I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."
Obama's remarks drew fresh criticism on the blogosphere that the Illinois senator favors a breed of wealth redistribution -- as well as a rebuke from the McCain campaign.
"If Barack Obama's goal as President is to 'spread the wealth around,' perhaps his unconditional meetings with Hugo Chavez, Raul Castro, and Kim Jong-Il aren't so crazy -- if nothing else they can advise an Obama administration on economic policy," McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb said in a written statement to FOXNews.com. "In contrast, John McCain's goal as president will be to let the American people prosper unburdened by government and ever higher taxes."
Obama frequently rails against what he calls a Republican concept that tax breaks for the wealthy will somehow "trickle down" to middle-class Americans.
Obama says he will not raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000 a year.
However, McCain's aides and supporters argue that Obama wrongly wants to raise taxes on businesses in a time of economic distress.
Both candidates spent Monday discussing how they would resurrect the ailing economy. McCain again pointed to his plan to buy up cumbersome mortgages from homeowners and renegotiate them. Obama unveiled what he called an economic rescue plan for the middle class, which included a 90-day moratorium on foreclosures.

Gina - A friend of mine remembered seeing your "skunk formula" on here and pointed me to it. I used it and it worked very well. There is still just a hint of odor if you put your nose right down to his but otherwise it's basically gone - Thanks.

If he (Obama) really holds to this as President, I pray he doesn't "spread the wealth" in the form of just cash. Part of his community orginizing was to get people in line for college grants, work structure and the like.
If the welfare state continues as is, in most cases, more generations of welfare recipients will become even more dependent on the system and less likely to contribute.

My father started and ran a Church based halfway house in Kansas. He and his staff started having the recipients of contributions describe their history. The majority of them had a mother on welfare, grandmother or father on welfare, and 2 or 3 generations back that had been on welfare. It was a learned pattern regardless of ethnic backround. There is nothing wrong with part time welfare in between jobs, but stagnating for decades in the system is deplorable unless one is truly disabled.
He started work programs (even part time) in the community or training as part of the critieria to recieve continued benefits. Clientele dropped by 60%, but then they started coming back and accepting the job programs. Many broke the cycle and became productive. Many did not.
My point is pure welfare or "tax credits" as the Obama campaign has very wisely called them, is just another nail in the coffin of truly giving people a "chance". I hope he remembers his early days in Chicago, and his own experience on pushing himself to do better than his father, once he got past his challenged youth.

I don't know everything there is to know about Obama, but what I do know, I know for certain: he has no clue as to how wealth is created. None.

Unwittingly, he knows how to destroy wealth, and that is, by attempting to redistribute it. Increasing marginal tax rates destroys wealth. And he has promised to increase marginal tax rates on incomes, dividends, cap gains, and estates(the death tax). And corporate tax rates in a discriminatory fashion for industries that he has decided he doesn't like.

In essence what he plans on doing is "capping" wealth potential. It just doesn't work when you have people that work harder to obtain wealth getting the same income as those that don't. I believe that's the main issue most have with unionized workforces as well.

Tsk, tsk. I think you folks got it all wrong. The headline
Obama to Plumber: My Plan Will 'Spread the Wealth Around'
should really read -
nobama to Plumber "My Plan Will Spread YOUR Wealth Around".
My best guess is that nobama won't want to add his own money to the pot.

What is he a modern day Robin Hood now? I work hard for my money if i want to "spread it around" it should be my choice not HIS. Is he gonna use some of his and his wifes money also? I read that she makes good money $300,000 + is he gonna use that money to or is just our money?

His plan is not just socialism, it is very much Marxism. It could destroy productivity and create class warfare. If you want the government to decide how to spend your hard earned money vote for Nobama.

Ok I just received a call from the UAW...on the other end was a man I could barely understand...sounded like he had marbles in his mouth, it took him 30 seconds to spit out... after stopping and starting and interjecting uhhh uhhh several times to "ask for my vote for Obama in the upcoming election" that was the only sentance I understood...let me tell you he was NOT reading from a script...if he was, he couldn't read ...IF I was an Obama supporter, after that phone call I would have reconsidered.

Not anymore than those who call McCain old...or Palin stupid. There are plenty of people out there who are voting for Obama simply because he is black...and those equally stupid who will not vote for him because he is black...with no regard to what he is saying...

Personally I don't see his color...mostly because it is clouded by the plan he has for this country should he be elected...

After all the attention tonight, if Joe the Plumber is smart, he'll strike while the iron is hot and try to cash in....I'm thinking t-shirts, bobbleheads, etc...he might manage to get a little more wealth to have spread around.

No, because John McCain showed what a true man of character that he is by taking the microphone from the woman and telling her that she was wrong and stopping her in her tracks. But the typical Obama supporter wouldn't see that, especially after drinking the "Obama/Democratic we're going to save the country" kool-aid that they're spouting out.

I do believe Joe the Plumber called Obama's tax plan "Marxist" in an interview last night...WTOL interviewed him last night and was already camped out in front of his house broadcasting this morning...
