Last night in the dark I forgot to lift the motor when I pulled the boat out of the water. I think its called the skag/fin on the bottom of the motor got pretty scraped up. Any suggestion on not forgetting to lift the motor. I use to tie a rope to the throttle as a reminder. I may have to go back to it. May put a dummy sign on my dash as a reminder. Thanks for you input. :help:

I'm interested in this also. I usually put the motor up a little as I bring it to the launch, but then I forget to pick it up all the way when I take it out. No scrapes yet, but probably only a matter of time.
I need a reminder to put the plug in the boat too. If my dad wasn't along with me most of the time I'd probably be bailing water.

Nothing mysterious about it,
Pull up to the dock,
Tie off ,
Shut off motor,
Raise it up.
Make it a practice to do the same every time and problem solved.
I know, I have done it myself :dizzy: more than once. :yikes:

I'm just happy I can actually pull out of a ramp with the motor down and have it not hit.

Yep do not ever deviate from YOUR process. I did this once and just dinged it. But that was enough!!

I've decided to keep a string tied to my throttle lever as a reminder to lift the motor and also put a sign on my dash next to my launch pass as a reminder to lift the darn motor. I don't want to hurt the "skag" anymore. For those of you that expierience the same forgetfulness hopefully this will help you too.

My procedure is to NOT raise up going into the launch (of course the launches I frequent are not shallow), idle up to the dock, tie up. With one hand on the throttle, one hand on the key, I raise the outdrive up to the full trim position. When the trim limit shuts off I then shut the key off and then hit the button to raise up to the trailer position, never taking my hands off the two positions.
As a reminder for the plug on my 17' Seanymph, I hang it from a short rope on the steering wheel when I pull it. Kind of hard to steer away from the dock if I have the plug banging my knees.

Good advise for hooking up your trailer also!
I once set my utility trailer on the ball and the phone rang. Got done w/the call and forgot to finish the trailer. Trailer came off and fortunately headed to the side of the road and I kept my truck in front of it.
Now I don't let ANYTHING distract me from fully hooking up any trailer.

So you launch your boat, go park the truck/trailer, walk back to the boat and get in, and say "Why is my plug banging my knee" :yikes:
Whats wrong with this plan ? :dizzy:

Replace the lower gear housing with a new one. You'll remember to raise the engine every time after that.

Here's the way it usually goes.
Prep the boat to launch, which usually involes getting in the boat to straighten things that have moved around while traveling.
Straighten the motor out so it can be lowered (no elect. tilt on a 80hp, :yikes:).
So you see it would "bang my knee" before launching. Excuse me if I misspoke. Also if it was launched without putting the plug in I wouldn't get very far from the launch before finding the problem.
I don't launch alone and if I did I'm sure I would see the problem while trying up and securing my boat to the dock. I don't drop and go unless someone else is there to secure.
And here's the kicker. I've only forgot the plug once, and since I started tying the plug to the wheel I've never forgot to put the plug in the day BEFORE going out.
Funny how when you do something to remind yourself, you never forget again.
So you see, there's nothing wrong with my plan. Works for me. If it won't work for you, don't use it.

I busted off one when I was coming back from duck hunting at Boles Harbor, a few years ago ,,I might have been ok ,,but I lost traction on the ramp, and the truck and trailer slid back a couple feet,,after that I don't forget

More than likely you won't do it again
Also with this colder weather be sure to let it back down and allow the water to drain and then bring it back up for trailering. I store mine in the down position once I get home.

Thanks for the suggestion to lower it to drain the water. I use transom saver so don't usually lower it when I get home. I will now though.
