Here's a link to the upcoming meetings given by the USFS concerning future forest management. It is my belief that the radical environmental groups see limiting forest management as the best long term way to end hunting as we know it. If all we have is old growth forest, we will have few game animals. With few animals to hunt, hunting will slowly die. I also think that this is a blind spot on most hunters radar screen. Forest managment, or lack thereof, may be the biggest long term issue/threat we hunters face. Healthy and young aspen forests are one of the hunters best friends, when talking about forest management. We basically want as much cutting to be done as possible. I'm not saying that we shouldn't have some area's of old growth dispersed everywhere, but it cannot be the majority of our public forests. Here's the link, please read. I think we should also get the respective e-mails for the decision makers and let them know our views, even if we cannot make the meetings. I don't know that much about forestry, but I do know that some middle ground could and should be reached. Isn't it amazing that people like PETA are so selective on which animals to protect. I always thought they wanted to protect ALL animals.

Do I think there should be a slash and burn mentality, no. I think selective harvest makes more sense to me. By that, I think that trees harvested should be no smaller than say 8" or so. Again, I am no expert on the subject, and Bob I know that you have studied this issue more than I probably ever will. Your passion for hunting and the management of the wildlife and the habitat it takes to manage this wildlife, is far superior than mine. Again, I only believe there is a middle ground, and that middle ground has to be determined before any cutting takes place.
