Only been in MI a short while. Wondered if there were some recommendations for shooting chucks. Have done plenty of P-dogs shooting.

Ask any farmer I'm sure they would let you hunt them.

..going to be a lot harder now that Bow is open,.for some reason bow hunters dont like it when your out there blasting away at chucks while they are trying to stick a Deer.

Best advice is to come back in late May early June.

I would go to county office and get a plot map. Farms with beans the year before are my favorite. Nice and exposed in the spring. I agree with Mitch dont try to acquire permission now. Wait till after Jan. Good luck to you , but if your used to pd's you probally will be bored with woodchucks. Or will you!?;):)

Thanks all for the advice. I'll wait until spring and go searching for the beans! Maybe get a gobbler while i'm at it.

if you want a real challenge try hunting chucks with a bow. farmers will even let you shoot arounf their building this way.

yep, farmers- don't overlook the hay fields. what do you use? I love shooting my .17 hmr...great gun, long range.

I never thought about the bow. I've stuck a turkey and deer with a bow but never considered a chuck. To the other reply, I have a Ruger .204 and a Bushmaster .223 both with Nikon glass. I have been really wanting a .17 hmr. Done lots of reading and reviews on them. I've sure held a lot in my hands tempting me. The only draw back was wind drift on long shots. But I don't live in the west US anymore and wind doesn't seem too bad here until the real cold arrives. I'm betting I end up with one before spring.

Shoot them under the chin with the .17 HMR and it turns them into pez dispencers. I love the .17 HMR.

Every farmer in our area allows unlimited chuck shooting.

another thing about chuck hunting, with a bow its very tuff to get in range, but one heck of a feeling when you get one.
also get some recipe for chuck, they cook up real nice.
after a successful hunt i try to take the farmer a nice roast chuck done up on the grill with bbq sauce, some grilled corn on the cob, new potatoes, and some cornbread.
also watch your P.s and Q.s while your hunting, make an extra effort to be a good guest. even ask if theres some help they need for an hour or so. it can get you an invite to hunt deer if he likes how you behave.

Good advice John. Fortunately for me I grew up in a farming community in Oklahoma. I'm well versed on hunting etiquette amongst farmers and ranchers. I have plenty of old blisters from all the payback favors! I've mended enough fence and hauled enough hay to last me a life time!
