Wondering if anyone is interested in Jan. or Feb. setting up a fun run. It would be a chance to bring a youngster or someone who has not done it in a while to run/hunt with dogs.

i live in Goodrich and have a place in Roscommon. I am willing to hunt both cottontails and snowshoes. i am also willing to travel anywhere that is central to who all wants to go. Drop me a pm and i will start getting things set. I have 2 females beagles and 2 kids and my buddy has 2 females, a pup and 2 kids.

Rick, I would definately be interested & would likely be able to go as long as I know far enough in advance. Either cottontail or snowshoes would be doable for me. I would love to listen to the beagles work. I used to hunt with beagles (my own & some buddies) all the time, but not in the last 10 years or so. Snow makes it even better. I would just use my pellet gun & camera but if you're organizing it, I'll use whatever you want me to! Thanks for setting this up. Let me know when & where & I'll be there. John H.
PS: I might even be able to help organize if you want, PM if you do.

I'm surprised Dan Eller hasn't chimed in here.
He has a fantastic club that's centrally located.
Google Stanton , Mi. and see what you guys think. If he don't get on here , I'll get ahold of him.

Jackbob42 are suggesting a fun trial? If so that sounds like a cool idea. If we could decide on a formate.

Ok guys and girls Here are a few rules/guide lines for the event. This is just a rough draft to get things started. From what i can tell the Lansing area or just north of there seams to be central to everyone.
I am not familiar with the area so help from someone to locate a few place we can go would be appreciated.
Check out the rules/guide lines and give me your thoughts.
Fun Run Rules/Guide Lines
Objective:
1) Introduce new people to rabbit hunting. This is a perfect opportunity to bring along a young hunter to experience hunting with dogs. Women and girls are welcome.
2) Have a safe and fun time in the woods. This is more about running our dogs and getting to know people who enjoy our sport not who’s dogs are better.
General Rules:
1) Children under 18 must be with an adult.
2) Hunters orange and at least an apprentice license is a must.
3) Dog owners are in charge of hunt.
4) No jump shooting. We do not feed and train or dogs not let them run.
5) Guns are on "safe" until told otherwise by Dog Owner. If hunting with me you will be reminded once, on second time you will be asked to put your gun up or asked to leave. This is for the safety of everyone around you.
6) If someone yells “dog” when you are going to shot at a rabbit you must pull up. This indicates that a dog is close to the rabbit.
7) Dogs are to be identified with owners name and phone number.

Why does there have to be guns if it is just a fun run? I am not to comfortable with people I dont no have loaded weapons around my dogs. Why not just get together for some sweet hound music. Jackbob and I run a few times a year together without guns except when his grandson is along and we always have a good time. If there are alot of people all running together I think it would be alot safer without guns.

well i bet you will find plenty that wopuld like to do it your way,, and a good amount that want some rabbit meat too. no reason both can't be accomodated. i will personaly do my best to show up. and the central michigan sportsmen do have a beautiful facility if they want to have us out. i'd like to bring my squirrel dog out and see what she can do with beagles too. we'll see about that though. Why does there have to be guns if it is just a fun run? I can understand why the dog ownders would be nervous. I know how I felt whenever I hunted the first time with someone new. Sometime even nice guys that are experienced hunters just don't get it when it comes to hunting safely with beagles. If the objective is to get youngsters interested, maybee just let them use the guns with direct supervision of either a dog owner or guardian or both. Or just let the dog owners decide on a number, then draw names from a hat to see who hunts first, second, etc.
Don't know what's best, but definately understand the concern. Thanks again for working at setting this up.

no guns is a fine idea, we can get with great company and listen to the hound run and get younger and older people involved with our sport this doesn't mean that we can't take someone that is interested hunting later in the season. How does that sound to you rick? No guns but everyone should take a camera:):):)

let the young hunters use guns with the direct supervision of the owners and guardians I would be up for that also. I know that my two younger boys would love it and I would love to see a young hunter get a rabbit.

I would personally prefer less shooters over more shooters. But this sounds like a fun thing to do, thanks for getting it started Rick.

Where will this be held at? I would be interested in bringing my dog for some young ones to watch work the rabbits. A little shy about them shooting in front of my dog but he works slow enough that they kids should be ok with supervision.

O.K. lets get this started again. I have been searching for a spot we can all go, or a few spots close together we can go. I live in Goodrich which is east of Grand Blanc. When i find out who is in and were everyone lives we can find a place that is central to everyone.
Also if anyone who doesn't have dogs or would like to hunt with dogs let me know and we can set something up. I try to get in atleast 2 snowshoe hunts a month at my house in roscommon if anyone is in the area when im there.

I got two dogs and I would be in. I can understand where people would not be comfortable with strangers shooting around their dogs. I got a lot of time and money stuck into my dogs and if one got shot my wife would kill me! If I do go with somebody new the rule is that shells are only put in the gun after the dog has the rabbit up and running.

dog owners are in charge of the hunt is that correct

Sounds like a good thing. One suggestion, you could have it as a youth hunt, where only youths carry, with an adult present, At the beginning, everyone could meet up. throw your parties name or a number into a hat and draw out pairs of parties, then some of the dog owners or fathers could meet follow beaglers and see someone elses pot lickers run.
Sorry if this was metioned or if it is going in a diiferent direction, kinda sped read through it.
I agree never boast of your dog, they'll make a liar out everytime.
Consider snow depths when deciding a spot, don't want to turn the young hunters off.
