This is a new posting area and a new thread.
Has anyone had any experience with the 6.5x284 wildcat? If so, Do you have any loads worked up for the caliber? Seroiusly thinking of building one on a Model 70 Winchester long action. Input or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Eagleye, you should be able to use 6.5-06 data as the 284 Win. has just about the same case capacity as the 30-06. If need be I'll look up some data for you. The 6.5-06 is a very accurate cartridge and easy to load for. If you are not stuck on a short action I would go with the longer case version.

Eagleye, was talking with some people at another sight and found out that Norma is making this into a factory round and so it will no longer be a wildcat.

Thanks, I knew Norma was making the 6.5x284 legitimate since there were some already-properly headstamped cases from the Norma booth at this spring's Shot show. The Norma brass is excellent but sometimes a little hard to get here. Eagleye.

I thought the main advantage of the .284 case was that you could get .30-06 class performance out of a short action? What is the benefit of using this mother case in a long receiver?

Curdog, for one the longer action is more compatable when using the heavier 6.5 bullets. Try sticking a 160 Hornady in the 6.5 Rem or the 260 Rem on the short action. Results in lost powder space. On the longer action you can have the throat custom cut for the bullet that will be used and get away from that 2.8 overall length. I personally do not have but one short action rifle and that is the 260 Rem. However, it was purchased with the express intent of shooting bullets lighter than 140 grain. If I wanted to shoot the heavier bullets, I would have gone with the 6.5x55 or the wildcat 6.5-06 just because they are in longer actions and can be more readably loaded with the heavier bullets.

Eagleye,

We have some load data for this cartridge, as well as other wildcats, on our web site. You might like to have a look at it.
