Thanks

There are plenty of places to go in the recreation areas. Just stay away
from the safe areas (picnic gazebos). Find a spot with some oaks with plenty of acorns and sit still; they'll be there.

With squirrels food is the one key ingredient. Mast crops such as acorns, hickories, walnuts, beechnuts, etc. are key drawing cards for bushytails.

Agricultural crops such as corn are a "no-brainer".

Find the food with taller trees nearby is all it takes AND, of course, permission if the land is private.

Anywhere you can find good mast production. It just take patience. I actually take my popup blind out with me find some good producing oaks and wait. Some time it take a while before theyll start moving but once they do youll likely be surounded by bushy tails. Its a good time with a 22 and the 22 doesnt spook em to much. They dont usually it another thought and you can limit out rather quickly.

I am also in S.E. MI and would like to try and do some squirrel hunting with my pellet gun. Is there anywhere near Detroit that I can shoot some? Has anyone here ever hunted squirrels with a pellet gun?

Yes you can as long as the fps is high enough, but deflection with a pellet gun can be a problem.

I took a couple gray squirrels from Sharonville this year, off Pierce road... I won't say exactly where but, Waterloo is where I got the rest... so far I've gotten 2 fox and 8 gray all together...

I tried my pellet gun on squirrels this year & got 3 the first time out. What kind of pellet gun do you have? The "springers" are definately capable of taking a squirrel out to 20 yards (or more if you can hit them in the head). Mine is a .22 cal RWS model 34 (springer). Chest shots out to 20 yards on fox squirrels is no problem with this gun. Good Luck, you're going to be hooked once you try it! John H.

i have a quick question...do you folks eat these guys? If so does it taste like chicken or what?

Not to eat what you kill would be unethical in regard to the taking of game.

Squirrel is excellent table fair and no, it doesn't taste like chicken. They have a distnct flavor, not "gamey" at all. In fact, and no pun intended, they have a bit of nutty flavor to them. Roasted (slowly), fried, stewed, deep fried, put in a cassaroule, stir fry, etc. squirrels make for a distinctive and delightful meal.

I figured that folks ate them, I didnt want my hubby to think I was nuts when I asked to go squirrel hunting...so how many would it take to feed one person?

I would love to try some...

It, of course, depends on the appetite. One squirrel per person is not unreasonble. If you'd like to try it ask, in another thread, for some squirrel recipes.

My favorite is to lightly brown the meat, toss them in some flour and then brown until finished. Salt and pepper to taste and enjoy.

By the way don't brown them on high heat, but rather medium. In cooking game for the table slower/lower is usually better.

I made some squirrell pot pie a few weeks ago. It was amazingly simple. Google squirrel recipes. It's amazing how many come up. This is the recipe I used.

1 cup Bisquick (Original Recipe)
1 cup of milk
2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1 can sliced mushrooms (drained)
1 one pound bag frozen mixed vegetables (thawed and warmed on stove top)
2 large eggs
3 guttted/skinned/boiled/de-boned large gray squirrels cut into chunks.
1 teaspoon pepper
2 teaspoons salt
Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees.
mix eggs, bisquick and milk with a fork til blended well and set aside.
mix soups, meat and vegetables in ungreased 9 inch baking pan.
Pour blended batter on top til covered completely.
Cook 45 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

Notes from Steve: for variety soups can be interchanged with cream of brocolli, cream of asparagus, cream of celery or cream of chicken.. Makes a hearty meal for 4 adults/ feeds six children...

Good deal. I also pressure cook them first for fast tenderness.

For the pot pies Ive always used cream of chicken .. delicious
