Starting on Monday 4-10-2000 I will be starting a cartridge of the week topic here at this forum. I will not be listing any of my personal loads that I use in my own standard chambered firearms. What I will post is loads from all manuals that I have for a specific cartridge. If anybody has any suggestions to start this off, please speak up. I will list some of my data for some of the wildcats I have used for big game. hunting.

Allen,
I like the idea, but don't forget about shotshells or handgun cartridges, o.k.? Personally, I like the older military cartidges that aren't that popular....8mm mauser, 7mm mauser, 6.5x55 Swedish (a favorite!), .303 British, 7.62x39, ect. These cartridges are chambered in a lot of old military rifles that can be sporterized for a reasonable cost and are effective for MI big game. My Swedish mauser I bought for $85 at a gun show, and with less than $200 worth of gunsmithing (a little at a time), I now have a nice little sporter that will handle whitetails, black bear, mulies, antelope, wild boar, and varmints. I'm not sure why Remington came out with thier .260 cartridge when the 6.5 was available....unless it was to sell more new rifles. I am also interested in those oddball cartridges that are excellent for their intended purposes, but for one reason or another, don't seem to get much "press", such as the 16 gauge (of course), .41 magnum, .38 super, 7mm-08, .444 Marlin, ect. Keep us posted....I like the idea!

Allen this sounds like a great idea.
I'm with Mr. 16 Guage as far as the 6.5x55 swedish goes, although my rifle is not completed yet. My dad and I are just finishing up his now and will be starting on mine real soon. Hope to have it completed so I can spend lots of time shooting it durring the summer and have it ready for fall deer season. Maybe this would be a good choice for a starter cartridge for cartridge of the week.

I will try and find some shotshell data. For some reason I don't even own a shotgun. Never hunted birds and only hunted rabbits when I lived in Michigan. But I will find what I can. Anybody out there is welcome to post any of their shotgun data. I have some in the Hogdin manual and the Winchester manual. When I did own a shotgun it was an old JC Higgins bolt action in 16 guage.

Say Allen,

Looks like the first choice of cartridge, is being decided right now! :-) The good old 6.5x55 would be a great one to start with.

I've got an ol'Mauser 96 in 6.5x55. One of those real long ones. With the straight bolt handle, and the huge safety lever. It's a nice rifle, all the serial numbers match. It's just missing the cleaning rod. I've never loaded for it, so this could help me. Of course, I'll have to order some dies.

Let me know, if you need some load data from a different manual. I've got quite a few myself.

Take Care!
