Just got my little mid-80's 4hp evinrude back from the mechanic...needed a carb rebuild that I'm not comfortable doing myself. I do regular maintenance on all my motors, and because of the advice of most people (including here), I've been running Seafoam through it. He said DO NOT use Seafoam, claiming it's not good for this motor??? Said there is another product (i wrote it down, but don't have it in front of me), or there is a new kind of Stabil (blue?) he said to use. I've always used Stabil in the fall when I winterize the engines...my routine is I don't run the engine dry...I run the Stabil in and shut 'em down. The other thing he said was even though this motor (and 2 of my other small outboards) were supposed to run 100/1 mix when manufactured, I should run 50/1 in them. He claims Evinrude realized a year or two after putting them out at 100/1 that they need more oil than that.

Has anyone heard either of these things? Sounds contrary to everthing I've ever heard. Signed...confused weekend mechanic :evilsmile

I had another mechanic not to use Seafoam and recommended Ringfree available thru Yamaha, Sounds like your mechanic knows what he is talking about . Stay with the 50:1 your motor will last a long time if yo do. I have a friend with a older model Suzuki that runs on 100:1 and it still runs but it has chrome plated cylinders

Never heard of that. Have a 89 Johnson, I run Seafoam thru every few tanks. Never a problem. I run it thru snowblowers, lawn mowers, quads, anything that runs on gas. I know alot of people that use it and never heard of a problem.
