The U.S Forest service here in the Huron National Forest along the Ausable River between Alcona dam & Loud dam have been using a huge helicopter to drop large whole pine tree's with the root ball and all, setting them all along the river edge in the water for 8 hours yesturday and are at it today, they did it a few years ago here and their.

The pines they are pulling are right behind my house 1/8 mile away, the amount of trips they have made is over a hundred = 100 tree's, I would estimate,

(Anybody know or have a hunch why this is going on ? )

If it was for fish cover, seems like a over kill, but I dont know much about that stuff.

Just my oppinion, but it aint to pretty, maybe in a few years it will look more natural,

I luv floating the ausable between that stretch, Alcona dam or bobcat landing down to Thompsons landing. :fish:

Thanks for listening to me ramble on,
Jeff

Thanks woodie slayer, eroison makes alot of since now that you mention it, cuz just last year I asked some heavy equipment operators, bull dozers and such why they were black topping all the dirt roads (just where they go over any small creek) out in the middle of no where basically, and their answer was the federal gov./forest was doing it everywhere for eroison control, and yes (tree drop'n) this is happening where the south branch of the ausable R. runs into the main ausable.

Thanks again,
Jeff

That strech has some big erosion problems. The one spot I can think of in a huge U in the river and the top there is a split rail fence. I used to camp over the bluff many years ago, but now you cannot drive to that spot. It is off Alrdich Rd near Curtisville. The did drop trees there many years ago and I bet they put more out there.

Hey Boardman, I know right where you are talking about, was a nice camping spot with a veiw over the bluff, my kid when she was about 4-5 yrs. old talked me into walking down that thing, was fine until going back up and she was tired so I had to carry her,LOL
no steps at that location to help out.

Yes I have walked down that thing.....and back up many times. This was mostly after some brown pops so the walk was harder! It is a bummer that place is closed. I loved camping and fishing there. I think way to many kids began partying there and trashing the place. I parked my jeep at the gate this march and walked out there and the camp area is totally overgrown now.
