Like any other tool yes they can work and sometimes they work against you,
We have a couple of the lifesize plastic standing decoys. You can make then doe or buck. We have shot some nice deer over them and have also watched a feww deer change direction and walk away from them.
We use them for bow and arrow mostly. I place them upwind and looking away from where I hunt. Most approaching deer will try to get down wind of then OR we have had them come in head on.
Keep them as scent free as you can and we also use deer scents on them. Most of the bucks I ahve shot using them were in the process of swinging down wind( I have them about 25 yards out) allowing me a 15 yard shot with 100% of the targeted deers attention on the decoy. Ihave had does rear up and kick the decoys with their front feet. I drew back on a 6 point I had no intendion of shooting UNLESS he broke my decoy! He was bumping and licking the rear end of the doe decoy and lifting it about a foot off the ground. Mad one heck of a loud plasticy sound on the frosty morning. Funny to watch too.
Some nice 2.5 and 3.5 year old ahve been taklen with the aid of them.
HOWEVER as stated I can thing of two nice deer approaching my stand and when the decoy was spotted the bucks stared at them a moment then turned and snuck away. THis was the first I had seen these bucks and not sure why the left. Wind and all was well in my favor. HAd these bucks seen the same decoys used by others?????? I cannot answer that but they left.
I also have two deer target in front of the camp. We have had deer in camps messing with the targets. One morning we came in from hunting and my dad asked why I laid the targets down. I told him I did. We walked over and both targets now sport hoof prints embedded into the foam from what ever deer attacked them. Should ahve hunted off the deck that morning LOL.
Hope this helps!
