Well, for the 1st time in the history of the world, I missed opening day of squirrel camp. Had an appointment in Big Rapids. I also have another follow up appt............................set for Oct. 1st. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !! :yikes::yikes:

Can't be helped. Responsibility is overrated. :)

My rubber roof failed due to wind and tree damage, my bathroom is trashed with waterlogged falling ceiling tiles, insulation and buldging walls. The water leaked into the kitchen and down the steps into the living room, trashing the carpet and floors. The whole shebang needs to be replaced.

Whaddya gonna do................ ?

Go huntin ! That's what.

Anyhoots, our annual Squirrel Camp is set for this week-end. :)
It's supposed to be warm days and cool nights with no rain in the forecast as of now.

We'll be setting up a traditional camp. Bed rolls, a lean to, small campfire, eating fried squirrel and washing it down with ice cold apple cider.
Been doing this for years.

To hell with the house, it's the insurance company's problem now.
It's Fall and times a wast'in.

Squirrel camp is just as cool as deer camp, only with nicer weather.
Talk about relaxing. Life is good. :)

I think you have the right approach. House in shambles, what are you gonna do, it already happened.

But squirrel camp, that's an idea who's time has come. I have been missing out on a golden opportunity. It's on the calendar for next year already! Thanks for the idea.

But damn, that squirrel camp sounds awesome! I'm already so booked up trying to get ready for deer season that I'm starting to stress - no tree rat hunting for me.

If cameras are "legal" in your trad camp, please share some pics!!!! (it's even OK if you're in them:))

Have fun Bud!

From posts above:

"Squirrel camp is just as cool as deer camp...."

"...squirrel camp, that's an idea who's time has come"

"....But damn, that squirrel camp counds awesome!"

Somehow guys, 'squirrel camp' ....doesn't quite have an image of John Wayne, Daniel Boone,...and, well you know what I mean.

No doubt it is fun, but just for the sake of preserving the "guy factor"....how about calling it 'pre-season camp'....'scouting camp'....."training camp"?

I am making it a point to do things I used to do before I got deer crazy. I have spent far too much time in a treestand the past 10 years. I got a 2 day squirrel hunt/final food plot planting for this weekend. Gonna give duck hunting a shot when it opens. Gonna give the roosters a run for their money on the opener. I'll probably give some bunnies nightmares before I get serious about bowhunting around the first of November. Fun stuff.

SQ camp is great! Been having one with my friends since we were 17. Now we are in our mid forties and bringing our kids. We have a no shotgun rule, we hate eating BBs. Great practice of woodsmanship and shooting skills, very challenging hunt:D. Deer at 100 yards are not much of a challenge after taking headshots on squirrels at 50 yards. Stalking up on them to get within .22 handgun range is my thing. The weather is usually great and you don't feel pressured like deer hunting. We always take a 4 day weekend and I cant wait for this weekend.

I'll be sure to take some pics. Was out there today and found 3 nice puffball mushrooms to cook up with the squirrels.
Put 3 squirrels in the bag to boot. :)

My wife's a man card holder too.
Hell, she's more hard core than I am. LOL
She packs in bed roll and sleeps on the ground under the stars by the fire every year. So does the daughter.
I've seen the night it started to rain and they'd just pull the wool blanket over their heads till it finally soaked thru. Only then did they get in the shelter. I tried the open air gig, but like something over my head and against my back. Ya never know what might come sniff'in around.................

We like to practice survival skills while were out there too. I got her her own possibles bag for our tenth anniversary. Norm Blaker made us both one.
He also made us up a flint and steel fire starter and we make our own charred cloth to get a campfire going.

Norm also crafted 2 field grade Burlington Chert flint knapped knives for me complete with antler handles off a buck I arrowed years ago. Kinda fragile, but razor sharp.

We like doing things the old way. :) Gives ya a feeling of accomplishment as well as confidence.

We have a saying at squirrel camp. " Your as comfortable as you want to be. "
Building shelters, basic survival skills and staying warm, dry and comfortable using what's at hand is a good thing to know. It's fun too.

Maybe next year we'll trade in the 22s for a couple of flintlock smoothbores...........

I have a feeling the girls won't let you sleep out by the fire with them because of the odor ..... I mean obvious reasons.:)

Anyway, have a great time TH - sound like a fantastic family outing!

What about rabbit hunting camp? :)

Yep, I remember when in the early 60s going to my great grandparents' cabin on the Pine River, just me an dad. It was a rustic cabin, no electric, gas or running water. It was a magic time in my life that I will always remember. Squirrel hunting back to the river and then trout fishing, man those were the days..........those were the days. It was my introduction to the woods, one that grew into an addiction.

I can still remember the musty smell of the cabin, the wood stove and of dinner frying on top. A meal fit for a king if there ever was one.

With dad gone now, I always reserve a day during the begining of squirrel season to spend in the woods. No paricular goal or harvest expectations, just to be in the woods.

That sounds like a great weekend Thunder. Where do you have your camp, I mean not exact location, but what area of the state?
