Yeah, sitting at work here too. Will be headed out this afternoon for sure. Wish the wind was a little different so I could hunt my favorite spot, but I will make due with an alternative spot.
On a side note, the Idaho Elk hunt was awesome. Had a shot at a nice 4x4, but it was not to be. In a nutshell, the terrain out there is a little rugged and rough on equipment, and I had a bit of an issue with my rest. Oh well. Managed to call in a spike elk and stick an arrow through him two days later. Man, I underestimated the amount of work involved in hauling an elk up and over a mountain. I would have gladly traded my hunting partner and friend of 26 years for just a few hours with a horse (that really sounds wrong if taken out of context). Anyhow, it was a great time, beautiful country, and awesome hunting. We had some really close encounters with some monster elk, and had many cows within bow range. I will be back at it again in 2010 if all goes well. Here's a pic:

No Luck.... a little too windy. Will be out Saturday Morning and Sunday Evening. Might try Friday night as well. Good luck.
Plewy, unfortunately I was not able to roll this elk over and tuck his legs for a nice glam shot. Luckily a small log stopped his fall, or he could have rolled further down the mountain, which would not have made the hike back up any easier.

Well, told the Mrs. I would be home by 10am on Saturday, since she had plans for us all day. Lowered my bow to the ground at 9:15 and tossed the string down. Turned to take down a scent bomb I had hung from my stand and out of no where a doe with two yearlings comes walking by. Right behind them is a split brow 9 point that I had pics of from earlier in the year. He proceeded to walk past me broadside at 20 yards and I had no way of pulling my bow back up. :(
At least he was unaware of my presence. I'll be back after him Friday if the wind is right.
Went out to another spot last night and saw some does. I will be back out tomorrow night, hopefully we can put some points on the board.

Does the wind seem a little strnage to you guys? I seem to recall alot of days with SW winds most past seasons, and have several great stands set up accordingly. This year we have had plenty of SE and NW. I can deal with the NW, but anything with E wind puts a damper on a few of my spots.
Yeah, watching the split brow walk by was a bummer. Although I will be back out there as soonas the wind cooperates. Planning to hunt Friday night, Saturday morning, maybe Sunday morning, and for sure Sunday night. I am going to try and score a few points, maybe even get a doe for the freezer, depending on where I am hunting.
Good luck guys and would someone please get us off the schneid.

I've kinda had the same problem Yarcher. Those south easters limit me to one stand. I've seen a few deer there, but its nice to be able to have a few more options.
I'll work on a doe also, but it won't be until they take the beans out. I can't drive anywhere that would be even a medium length drag. Most of my stands are at least 1/2 a mile from where i park. My old back cant take that drag anymore!
Good Luck guys

Saw two baldies last night. They were walking right towards me along the creek bed until the neighbors dog went on a barkfest, the kid starting singing at the top of her lungs and the other neighbor started his leaf blower. All within a 5 minute time span. They blew and split.

WOW! those mosquitos where thick tonight. It's no wonder I did'nt see any deer with all the extra movement of me swating at them. I cant remember the last time I hunted in swarms of the little leaches like tonight.
I'm ready for the full moon to pass also. The daytime movement always seems to slow down when they can move all night in the light.
I'll be back out in the morning to give it another try.

10-13-2008, 07:43 AM
Me and the Thermacell hunted Sunday morning and evening. Saw a couple does, and the beans were being taken out right next to me all day. At least I will be able to drive back there now to recover my deer (provided I actually start seeing some horns again). Saw alot of fresh sign in the field that had the beans taken out on Saturday. Looks like the deer were pretty active overnight. Will probably let these temps drop and then get back at it later in the week. Man, someone on this team must be having a good season... what gives?

Well, got tired of waiting. Snuck out of work a little early and slipped into a stand were I have been seeing does. Had a decent doe come in about 6pm, and figured I would have time to track her and get her out of the woods before dark. She gave me a nice broadside shot at 30 yards, and I put an arrow through the boiler room. Home made lighted nock worked like a charm. She ran about 40 yards and folded up. Couldn't ask for much better, especially with the heat. Went and got the truck and had her out of the woods in no time. Thanks to a couple friends, she is already quartered up and in the fridge. I will post the pics up tomorrow, and we will finally be on the board. :)

Missed the scoring update, but we are on the board. I am a bow only guy, so we have a couple extra points there as well. Not headed back out until saturday, to a place I have not hunted all year. It used to be my honey hole, but it is a little to far to drive regularly. Should be interesting. Anyways, I took one for the team...

Nice 8pt. Sounds like you guys are doing better than me. Only seeing like 3-4 deer a day. Keep passing on the same 4 and 6pts, waiting for an old doe to come in range. Trying to hold out for a shooter buck, but if things don't start to pick up I might quit letting the 6 walk.

Great job Ishot. I went out Saturday and saw nothing, but my young nieces gave me the scouting report and said they saw a nice 8 point in the backyard recently. There was plenty of sign, so I will give it a go again this coming weekend. Got out Sunday and saw a couple does and some button bucks. Good sign for the coming years I guess.
In order to add the banner to your signature, you need to right click on the banner and hit copy, then click on "User CP" at the top of the page, right under the "home" button. You can then edit your signature, just go in there and right click, then hit paste. Sorry if that is either to simple or too complicated, not sure how computer savy you are. You made it on here and got a pic posted, so your ahead of about 95% of the users on here. Let me know if it doesn;t work.

Saw nothing this evening, on a brighter note I saw my first shooter of the season last night. Well yesterday, walkin to my stand I caught him working a scrape but wouldn't come closer than +40 yds. Too far to shoot without knowing the exact range and no definite windows. Anyone been hunting midday? When are you guys seeing most activity?

I'm bow only. I do rifle hunt, but usually I have my best chance at a nice buck early in the season. This year I might stick around home for the opener and hunt a couple of my bow spots. With my luck I'll plug a nice one I can't enter into the contest.. oh well. I am saving a tag for late bow, as I have a permit to hunt the Shiawassee Federal Refuge with a bow in early December. I also have a friend with property bordering a secluded piece of the Refuge, so we have easy access to an otherwise hard to reach place. Lots of sign there during hte scouting period, adn they see plenty of nice bucks that time of year. So if nothing else, I will be out there still trying to get us some bow points in the snow...;)
Good luck guys!

Saturdays 4 1/2-6 pt and Sundays lost cause tbd 3 yo buck :confused::confused::confused::sad:
Went out Saturday in the monsoon. saw two does and a button. Getting ready to call it when I see this buck coming into my decoy. 20 yard shot. Boom. Ran 20 yards or so and dead.
Sunday had some family helping to do. Ended up doing a "what the heck" hunt at my Step bros property. Set decoy on bean field, sat in stand. Hunted between a standing corn field and plowed beans. Saw a deer butt....couldn't see what it was. Watched it for a while. Deer came my way, still to thick to see the head. Nice deer though. Next thing I know, my Step bro's buddy mike is standing at the base of my stand. I told him that I had a deer 15 yards behind me. He started talking about all the deer he saw. I had to cut him off and tell him that there was a deer standing right below me at this current moment. He said SHOOT IT. LOL. Told him I couldn't tell what it was, but my step bro said that if I saw a big doe, to shoot it. Well, I stood up and turned around and then the deer took off down along the standing corn. Stopped about 60-70 yards out and turned broadside. It was a big buck. I know there was 3 on one side (I risked the chance of a decent brow somewhere) and that's all I needed. I cranked the scope up to 9x and pulled the trigger. He stumbled and busted into the thick hedge row, clothlined himself, fell over some dead fall and then came back into the corn and disappeared. It's a long story, needless to say, the picture shows what I found and still stands to be the TBD buck. My left side is sitting out there in the woods somewhere, right side must have been broken off from fighting. Details to follow after some more searching. So much for my trophy 8 pt.

You think he crashed into a tree or something and snapped it off? Seems like that would leave a mark on a tree, or would have messed up the ground/leaves from him falling and getting up, etc. How far did this deer go? If he only busted through a hedgerow, I would think your horn would be laying right there. Maybe I missed something. Hope you find it and it is bigger than you first thought...

If he only busted through a hedgerow, I would think your horn would be laying right there. Maybe I missed something. Hope you find it and it is bigger than you first thought...Ran about 50 yards (perfect heart shot. Heart was in two pieces when I pulled it out!) I watched it crash in the thicket, fall ***** over applecart, get up and it came back out to the corn, so I avoided tracking through that crappy area. It's got to be in there. Tried looking but the blizzard and poor lighting made it impossible. It looks like and old break on the right. The left looks like it was barely connected. Old injury took a good chunk of the base away.
