It feels good to be home...
So out of curiosity, who on our team elected to be archery only? I did and can at least guarantee a doe. I'll be hunting primarily Barry and Calhoun counties. I thought I read that any member on your team that chose bow only your team got extra points for.. is that still happening or no?
Only 14 days left till bow opener.

Im bow only also, you get 2 extra point for bow only or if you picked gun only but not for combo. I will try to put up some point for us in the early season, the hoyt is all tuned up and ready to rock:evil:.

I'm bow only. I'll take a doe or 2 for meat, but my buck prospect is up in the air. I lost 2 properties from last year (one was a 360 acre farm with a 20 acre pond/swamp :( ) but I picked up 2 and am working on a third new property along with the family land in Arenac County. I bow hunt right through rifle season anyways.

QDMAMAN was just stopping by to put his two cents in about our name, which was very funny.
I am hunting combo. The area I hunt generally is really good for bow, okay for gun, but starting around thanksgiving through muzzleloader gets really good, especially if we get some snow and cold temps. I am heading out west on November 6th and will be back the within a day or so of our gun opener, so I hope to get a big boy down during the first couple weeks of bow, and will then probably cool it to keep my wife happy, until I get back from out west. I did draw a bow hunt on Shiawassee National from December 1 through 5th, not sure on exact dates, around that period. Have some good spots located. I will put down a doe, but generally will wait until muzzleloader. Good luck guys!!!!

Well - one more time. Had my ego put in check last night. I showed my wife our team logo. She said sounds like a name I could use at home, thinking she was referring to the lethal injection, I thought it was a complement, she was quick to point out that she was referring to the silent but deadly part. oh well:lol:

I'm representing both bow and gun. Last year I did bow only. The extra points were nice but I would have gotten more points doing a combo.
I've been away for awhile and have not and will not be able to scout out my property. I'll get there the weekend before the opener. So I'll do one walk through and see what going on. It usually doesn't change to much but one of the four property's on our south line changed hands. It was a serious bedding area and high pressure get away section. I've been told that someone has put a large camper right in the middle of the property. Which should drive the majority of deer to take refuge in our abandoned orchard (which they normally do early in the season).
We'll see what happens and then report back mid-October.
Benny
09-17-2008, 10:23 AM
Yeah that guy that shot that buck is a douche bag "I forgot to get my tag" He even admits he remembered he didn't have it before he shot it when the deer walked in. No more record for you.. way to go ace.
Anyway I've been seeing quite a few deer coming around our crab apple trees the last few weeks. They usually have everything pretty well cleared out of there by Oct. but sometimes early they're still hitting them looking for left overs. No sightings of anything impressive but there was a descent little basket 6 and a small 8 that I have seen a couple times. The little 6 hasn't really got anything to worry about.... for now... but seeing as I didn't get any antlers with the bow last year I'm afraid that 8 is fair game for me.

Way to go!!!! Points on the board is great, looks like a nice size doe as well. I have gone yote hunting a couple of times and had zero luck, but on the same property I have shot two deer and had similar problems with the yotes getting into them quickly. I guess that just confirms how bad of a caller I must really be.
Does everyone on the team plan on taking a doe as part of the contest? I plan on doing so, but will most likely do this later in the year with cooler temps, although seeing the photo has me rethinking a little. Great Job!!!!!

Just went out at lunch time and doctored up a mock scrap. Jumped two bucks that were bedded near my stand, as far as I could tell the first looked to be 1 1/2 six point, and the second, was a larger 8 point, not good enough look to tell if it was a shooter, but I have not seen to many 8's I don't like. Getting very fired up!!!!!

I agree. This was my last venture into the area, just to freshen up before the season. I thought I would be pretty safe going in at lunch time on a sunny day.
Did I see a post that you referenced lots of shooting in Saginaw for the doe opener? I live out in Thomas Township area and work in Saginaw Township. We you just being funny and referencing to the peace and tranquility of our fine city , or do you live in the area?

Excellent. I live off of VanWormer in Shields, across from the middle school and elementary school. If you are heading down Gratiot, take a left on River (south), hunt right at the end of the road. Lots of big ones running around, just have to get one close enough. Buddy that works with me is on team 8. we will have to meet up for one, some day, to celebrate and big one down. Good luck.

Ya know, there's a bigfoot out there? right? Not joking either. I haven't seen it, but know a couple that have. There's a member here that lives in St Charles that's seen it. I can't remember his name though. I know that area well. I used to ride dirt bikes between Miller and Swanson. My church used to be Ascension. It's alot different out there now then when I lived there.
Ps. My buddy's kid goes to Havens. My youngest is at Handley (old South).

Thanks guys, glad I can contribute to what I am sure is gonna be a smackdown of points for us this year!!!! I just finished, THE first of many fresh venison dinners this year. Grilled up 10 swiss steaks, fresh garlic, light pepper, onions, mushrooms and for a side dish......broccoli-cheese-rice. Washed it all down with a victory Budlight! The kiddos ate like little piggies too, the 4yr old, the 9yr old, the 14 yr old, and the 20yr old. Good stuff!
Does count, so if you have a spot that you won't screw up.......lets get those points going. The earlier you get it done, the less pressure you will feel later in the season. Plus, it is well in advance to when the big boys will be really cruising.

Great job soggy. I put some points up today lets keep it rockin!! I saw 6 bucks and 11 does, 1 was a nice 8. I dont know if any of you have ever seen this before but after I shot deer were coming form every direction and going to the spot I shot the doe smelling the ground and my arrow for a long time, the bucks were doing a lip curl and the does were opening up thier mouths. I double lunged her so I dont understand why they would do that. Anyway great night in the woods. Marinated backstaps in Guniss with some seasonings tomarrow.:corkysm55

Looks like have jumped out in front early, I calculate we now have 12 points, lets stay out front. Shoot some does boys, if everyone manages a doe early then throws in bucks later, we will be assured to stay ahead. Those who wait on does till later in the season will find out that may have been a mistake, alot of tags go unfilled like this everyyear.
That is some different behavior, I have seen them come up and sniff, never seen what you described.

Congrats Benny. I might not have planned well, my birthday and valentines day have equaled November 19th and December 15th babies. Oh well, the two years that my wife was pregnant were the two best hunting years I ever had as far as harvesting nice bucks, so maybe you will have some of the good luck mamba jambas to go along with a new member of the family. :)
did some long distance watching of a field one of my stands is in the other night and saw four bucks among many deer that I would harvest. None would have been in range if I was in stand, but they were close enough to get the heart pumping, probably within 100 yards of the stand. one was a real nice 10, the other three all appeared to be 8 points. down to a week before the season, I will be hunting opening day, morning and night, and fri, sat, and sun, morning and night. I will be out of commission the following weekend, heading to Petoskey for four days for 10 years of marriage. Hope to have one down before we go, but if not, upon my return will be hitting it hard.

yeah I thought it said you got 2 points for that also... I picked bow only so that should be another 2 there.

09-24-2008, 08:39 AM
I found this in the rules......
"The two points don't appear to be related to hunter success, your team gets them for everyone who limits themselves to bow or gun whether they shoot a deer or not."
Benny
09-25-2008, 07:51 AM
I saw that but I didn't see anything that said when the points will be posted. Maybe not until the end? IDK
Well I glassed the field last night where those crabapples are and saw 2 smaller bucks. First one was just a spike...which he looked to still have velvet on... and the second was a small fork horn. There was also probably 7-8 doe that came through, so I should be able to add some points fairly early hopefully. 5 full days 'till opener :evilsmile

Good luck Benny. Always fun, just seeing animals. Just a matter of being in the right place at the right time for that big dog.
The way I understand the two point bonus is that it is a reward for picking one or the other in advance of hunting. So if you picked Bow only and shot a 12 point with a gun during gun season, great for you, but you cannot enter into the contest. Not sure when they will add the bonus points for those that entered gun or bow only. I believe you get the two point bonus whether you harvest an animal or not, it is a reward for limiting your options.

We'll nothing down but a wonderful morning. I saw 15 deer / four bucks. Couple right at first light. Had a small six or eight come right under my stand at first light. He spent a minute or so, sniffing around, and actually hit his horns on my steps, before he worked away from my spot, not a shooter. The second and third were about 100 yards from me with several does, one was a ten point and one was an eight point, both shooters, the 10 point, was really nice, definte wall mounter. These two turned and were hitting their horns together, just lightly, not pushing each other around, only the second time I have ever seen this. The last buck I saw was at least a five point, he had three one the left side, four if he had a brow tine, and what looked to be a broken main beam on the right that was about eight inches long, but almost looked like a spike on that side rather than a broken off beam. One of those bone white looking racks. I will be out again tonight. Winds are not great, but I can't not hunt opening day. Hope to hear some good stories. Saw a few other does as well. Great start!!!

Hello, Hello - anyone? I thought we would have a picture or two already, back at it tonight, I did not head out this morning. I did go out last night, bad wind, so I hunted from an elevated gun blind with windows, kept it buttoned up to avoid scent. I saw over 70 deer, keep in mind, I hunt farm field edges, but all those deer were within 200 yards of me.
There were only about 10 deer that came within bow range, two were bucks, but they were a four point, and that same half racked buck with the spike on one side that I had seen that morning.g I saw five other shooters, including the biggest buck I have ever seen. He was about 200 yards away, but I think he would easily score over 150, he looked to be 20+ inches wide with great tine length and mass. I am excited about the west wind. I have an ambush spot that I will be hunting tonight, many of the deer I saw were crossing out of a native grass field into the corner of the corn, including three of the shooters. There is a large bush, that I will make into a ground blind tonight that will about 20-30 yards downwind of this spot, and most of the deer entered the area from this location, keeping my fingers crossed. good luck guys.

I am going to hit it hard this weekend as well, next week and the following weekend are out as I will be up north with my wife for our anniversary. I have seen a ton of deer, including several really nice bucks, and one giant. Have not had a shooter in range yet, have passed on seven different, spikes to six points that were all little guys.
This mornings hunt got cut short by a coyote that came cruising through, not within range and a bathroom run, and last night prime time was ruined by someone's black lab that wanted to look for pheasants in the field. :dizzy: It was disappointing, but kind of funny watching the dog, his tail was just going like crazy, you could tell he thought he was in heaven, and there were a couple of doe fawns that were just watching him from about 20 yards away and he had no idea. Still saw a couple bucks last night, the only one that offered a shot, looked like he had golf pencils for spikes, oh well. Just great being out.

Not hunting this weekend, but will be out in the woods a few days after work next week and be hitting it hard on Friday and Saturday. He came in at about 8:30am, he came over a hill and walked right at the blind I was in, I was able to stand up and was waiting to see if he would go to my left or right. I was hoping right because of a light northwest wind. Of course, he went to my left. I got to full draw and was waiting for him to step into my shooting lane and he caught my wind at about 15 yards, he turned and jumped out to about thirty yards and was quartering away. I was able to get turned and got off a good shot. I knew I hit him, but was not able to see the location of the arrow. He ran right back the way he came. He made it about fifty yards and started up the small hill where I had first seen him and fell over backwards as he started up the hill. I was pretty pumped. Hit him a little high but where I was aiming, exit was high also, but right through the shoulder area, pretty sure it got those main arteries. I started using the slick tricks and am sold. He has 15 inch spread, seven inch tines, not a monster, but good deer in my book.
Had my kids, who are six and four, come over with my wife and had them track the deer and locate my arrow. I did not tell them where the deer was. My kids walked about about two feet from the deer in before they saw it, the looks on their faces was priceless. I will get the photo posted tomorrow morning.

Just added up our points, with your fellas two 8 point bucks ( worth 13 team points a piece), will take our total up too an early whopping 36 points. That should put us back up in first place once again! Hoping to stick an arrow in a nice buck this week. Talked to my buddy and he managed to get out this past weekend, spotted 4 real nice shooters. Maybe Tuesday or Friday morning get a crack at one of them.

Nice job kerby, Good story love when you can watch them fall!! My deer didnt have a spread at all, he came down a hill chasing some does, walked broadside at 25 yds saw he was an 8, I took the shot then he ran 20 yds looked back and fell over. Gotta love that felling.

Great job guys can't wait to see the pics.
Haven't had anything worth shooting come within range yet. I also had a golf tee spike cruise by last night. Saturday morning was probably the most exciting of all of them. Saw two descent bucks head into the swamp real early. Both 8 pts about the size you guys are describing. They weren't even in shotgun range, but it still gets the ticker pumpin'. Shortly after that a fog settled in (I'm hunting over a bowl shaped swamp) which pretty much made it impossible to see further than 15 yds. Heard what I believe was probably deer working through the wood edge but couldn't see at all until about 8:30ish.
But basically only doe have come through close enough... another day or two and I'm gonna have to draw some blood.
Anyway excellent job guys hope to be joining your ranks soon.

whered everybody go? anyone been out and seen any deer? I went out twice this week. monday night I had a group of doe kinda working my way along the edge ...bout 7:00 pm.... probably still about 100 yds away or so. Then I hear this noise like breaking glass...deer heard it too.... then I hear the noise again and again over and over... deer kinda spooked a little didnt raise tail and run but kinda scampered the other way .... and took the 6 point that I hadnt realized was with them right along too... so I keep hearing this noise like someone smashing bottles like 50-60 yds away from my tree. theres a bunch of really old trash piles in that general area with some old glass bottles. So completely steamed at this point, I get down, walk over there, and this 16-17 year old guy that rents the house thats on the property is back there just smashing all the glass bottles he can find. His excuse when I confronted him was that he didn't know I was back there.... even though my explorer is parked basically behind the house he lives at in the field edge... I asked him if he realized that he wasnt supposed to be back on the property anyway, even if I wasnt there and his only response was that he didnt think it would matter.
Sorry I'm ranting a bit but their dogs have followed me back twice now and now this guys back there smashing glass with 1/2 hour of light left... this has been a real test of patients.... time to buy one of those air soft guns I think...

Good luck with dealing with the situation Benny. I have not been out at all since my success. I did make it out turkey hunting one night and took my four year old son. Was able to take a turkey and be home within an hour. Was pretty cool to do this with my son, first experience like this with him and he did great. I am going to try and get out this next week, but might be another week before I am able to get back into the woods. Will be looking only for a wallmounter at that point. Good luck guys. I am going to try and take a doe with a pistol during rifle or a late season bow doe, to get those points, so holding off for now on further harvests. Good luck to all

Went out this morning and passed on a mangy one horned fork, and a doe with a limp. Benny, I got one for you. The family hunting property I hunt, I'm the only bowhunter. I head up the night before opener, and my uncle is up there with a few of his buddies just hanging out! He tells me, day before opener now, he walked all the property and checked all my stands. He sits in his tower blind(which is 40 yards from one of the stands) and sees a couple small does. Of course, opening day I see zero deer. Check the trail cams, now deer at all from the time he arrived there. I confront him about it, and all he says is "They'll come back. They don't go far". He's a know-it-all type that won't listen to anyone. SO, I'll be hunting a different lease most the season.

That's one of the reasons I don't duck hunt anymore. Too many people with too little common sense. I've been shot twice. One time, I warned the other hunter not to put his decoys between him and me, but he wouldn't listen. Oh, he listened after he shot me and I walked 100 yards through the marsh screaming at him the whole way.

Just thought that I'd let you guys know I got a huge 4-5 year old matriarch this past weekend! I took the picture with a disposable so I won't throw the it up on here for the contest until near the end of the season.
I've been seeing a ton of does and quite a few small bucks. I've only seen one monster buck and it was at an extreme distance. Things look good for taking a few more does and a buck come the beginning of November.

Sunday, I threw a decoy out to see if I could bring him in range, but just managed to scare every other deer out of the county! Apparently, they've seen decoys before. :( One of them was a fat juicy doe too! Trying again tonight on another lease with about 8 different bucks.

Scrapes aren't even opened up yet up there, wierd. Anways, great job Wild way to go and can't wait to see the pics of the matriarch you got. They sure are trophies when you get an old wise doe! Will be getting out maybe after work this coming week, went pheasant hunting today and we got 4 roosters. Little strange though, we did not even jump a deer......if it were not for the standing corn I would be worried. Good things to come I suspect, good start this year already! Shoot straight brothers!

How is everybody doing? Have not been out, heading to Wyoming November 6th, coming back around the opener. Went out with a couple of buddies and got five geese the other day, only put up one rooster and we must have bent our barrels after the morning hunt.
While goose hunting, saw a small basket something chasing a doe across a field before the shooting started. Hoping to get a good southwest wind for a couple of my spots, to get one or two hunts in before heading out west. Well I went out tonight started seeing deer move about 5:30. Had some nice does feeding through the woods, one was looking very nice at about 40 yds so I waited till she got closer. She was closing the gap very slowly when all he!! broke loose. A nice little basket rack 8 started running all the does out of Mi, ran about 7 does out of the area in about 10 seconds. Saw three buck noting worth shooting though. That basket rack has some great potential though. Great night in the wood!

I won't be heading back out until around November 5th. Then I'll hunt straight through til the end of the 1st week of gun season. Then if I need more venison I will head back out for the muzzle loading season.
I'm pretty fired up though. Anticipation is half the fun of it, especially when I've been seeing a ton of deer and all the corn is still standing. It's only going to get better.
By the way when I was out there bow hunting I saw tons of scrapes out there. Usually we get a ton of rubs with very few scrapes and what scrapes we get our isolated and small. Heck most are never hit again. Some of these scrapes had already been hit multiple time. Seemed early to me but that's how it goes sometimes.

Goose hunted yesterday morning. Took our limit, it was a blast. Went out bow hunting with my son (4) last night. Saw about 15, all does. I was tempted on one big doe, but I really want to take a deer/doe with a pistol during gun season as I have never done this and she had two fawns with her. I know they would be fine and have done this before, but I have time and would rather take a big solo doe. My son was awake long enough to see five deer and twelve turkeys before falling asleep on the ground. I had him bundled with a couple coats, carhart overalls, boots, hat and gloves. He is was nice and toasty and that was all it took. We had a good time. I had to get him a slurpee on the way home for being a good little hunter

It's fun when you get to take your kid out there! I'm heading up today for 4 days of hunting. Also, I read an article about fawn mortality. Fawns that learn to fend for themselves at an earlier age, tend to live longer than some that are nurtured longer. The earlier in the season, the better. It gives the fawns time to learn about grazing before the hard weather comes in.

http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/3047/08_Buck_1_.jpg
There was a lot of firsts for me on this particular hunt. I got out into the woods rather late... I didn't climb into the stand until about 4:45. Sat down knocked an arrow and as I put my bow on my hanger the arrow falls to the ground....damn. Grab my other arrow ( which I only had two because I lost the one I shot my turkey with) and the knock had fallen out at some point, you can see in the picture the arrow with no knock. double damn.... So I climb down, can't find my arrow look around for like 15 mins and finally find it. Climb back up sit for a while and sweat from all the up and down climbing. About 6:00 he comes in from behind me with his nose right up the rear end of a doe. Then the doe turns and starts to head back into the thick stuff taking the buck with her. I tried the can 1-2 times...nope not interested... grunt....ehh he don't care about nothing. So then (first time I've ever seen this) at about 50 yds or so he gets it on with this doe. Right after they "finished up" I hit the can once more. Just like a typical male, he was done with her and now VERY interested in the can call. Comes trompin in, steps behind some scrub brush, I draw, he stops. Licks himself stands and looks around, I let down. Starts to walk to the opening again, I draw again, he stops again, licks himself again stands around a bit.... I have to let down again. 3rd times a charm, he walks out into the shooting lane as I draw...about a 30-32 yd shot... I let the arrow fly. He takes a couple big jumps and stops and turns back to look where I shot him at. I didn't see the arrow sticking out and I'm looking for blood pouring out on the other side but don't see it. Start to second guess myself then he tries to take another step and starts to crumple, falls to the ground and starts huffing and I can see the steam pumping out the side of his chest like a chimney. 20 secs later maybe he expired maybe 15-20 yds from where I shot, I don't think he ever even knew he was hit. I don't normally jump up and down in a tree stand but this was the most exciting hunt I have ever been on. First time seeing deer get it on...which in retrospect makes me feel kinda perverted because I didn't even look away for them...it was like deer porn!! Also the first buck I have seen expire after shooting with a bow. Absolutely cool.
Well I'm not sure now if I'll go back out for another archery hunt or wait till the 15th...we'll see.... I still got the fever and pictures from July of another buck that has to be this guys daddy so.... I might have to go out a couple more times...

On a good note, I stumbled into a last minute lease. It's an 80 that hasn't been hunted in years and it's surrounded by dairy farms. It has 2 streams and a lot of oaks, and tall grass for the deer to bed in. Hey fellas, spent the last two days in all that crap weather we have been having. Worst opening day I have ever seen. Think I heard about 8 shots all day is all, the buck pole at Mill Creek only had 4 bucks on it Sat nite. Sunday was much better, full buck pole, lots of deer sightings. I scored on two, does that is. Took the first one at 120 yards , then the second at 140 yards both with my ML. I only saw one buck and it was a small four and was out of range had I wanted to shoot him. Bucks seemed to have holed up with the weather down where I am at. I may hit the farm tomorrow before I get up north to my other hunting grounds. Glad I knocked the two does down, I now have plenty of freezer meat till next season...all my focus will be on harvesting a nice wall hanger. I will post up some pics when I get some of the does. It was about 1:30 in the afternoon yesterday and he was interested in a doe. He ran a 9 piont off that was a little smaller. I looked at him for a bit, about 10 minutes and decided I should take him since I had to head back south today. I should have waited! went out this morning for a while and saw a way better buck. Oh well, I will go back up this weekend and get a doe for the team.

Iron county 9 point shot on November 15. He came in behind me and went into a thicket about 100 yards away and was working a licking branch. I had a little opening so I took the shot, which was high, it hit him on the top of the front shoulders. So he spun around and was running back along the edge of the thicket. He stopped 100 yards over my left shoulder and I took another shot which dropped him. I havent weighed him yet but he has a HUGE body!!!!

Well I just got back from one of the worst hunting trips ever. I hunted state land in Menominee, my buddy has 40 acers just down the road With 4 guys on that. I have been hunting there for 5 years and its been pretty good and not a lot of hunters. This year was a different story, to many people. On opening morning not even two hours in the stand a 4 wheeler drives by about 40 yd from me, and came back less then two hours before dark:(. hunted the next morning and didnt see the guy. Went in for lunch and came right back out and my tree stand was gone:rant:. What a bunch of loser low lifes. Only saw a couple bucks a little too small. might be my last trip up there for the opener. On the brighter side, way to go guys on two great looking bucks:D:D. We should be in first by a long shot. Nice job.

sorry haven't been here in a while but hey excellent job on the deer for slicktree and U of M fan!!!! This team has really put together a great effort at taking this thing!!
I ended up taking a doe Monday evening with my muzzle loader - doesnt count for any points because I was bow only but I was pretty happy, it was my first deer with this gun (bought it last year) and I got it on video!!! hit her kinda high  but she didn't end up running very far. It was recorded on an 8mm camera so I have to get it transfered to digital so I can post it.
anyway excellent job guys on some fine bucks!!!

Just a quick update. I got another doe. Will post pictures in a few weeks. I've been seeing bucks but not getting the right opportunity. Hopefully a big one will present a good shot as I'm getting impatient. I might go ahead and take out a few of the scrub bucks that are coming around.
