We may be a bunch of hicks, but wait till you see the points rack up on this team!

Can anyone say "RAINFALL" - well, we had it down here. Official total over the weekend was 10.56" on my neighbors rain gauge. Some areas were over 12". T-here is the before and after picture of my food plot and a raging river taking over. The cabin was left untouched, as designed, and the water never made it to the foundation or flood gates in the crawl space for that matter. Yes, boys, we got some moisture down here!

After 10.56" of rain, and notice, it was still raining on Monday when I took the photo.

Trust me, there is nothing on my land that resembles a pile, is within shooting range of my stands, is put there just so I can shoot a deer while they are eating off of it, and is not in existence 365 days a year especially at critical times when the deer need the nutrition.

Define the opposite of that statement, then you have yourself a bait pile. That is not what I have.

It would suck big time if I did not have 14 other plots planted, and the ability to repair this one with a planting of "piled high" winter wheat that will fill in just nice for the late fall, winter and early spring, when the deer are in need of some forage.

I was having the issue too! Nothing that the urologist couldn't fix though. You will not need a new one.:lol: My wife always said, "don't take a knife to a gun fight", so you are probably doing the right thing by taking your gun!

Gosh, this is a quiet bunch. I hope I did not offend anyone! If I did, I apologize. The banner is great, and all of the ideas were awesome, and no I did not create it, I have no clue on computer technologies! I put in 82 hours at work this week, and it is Friday! Giddy?

We have a great team by the way, should be a good tourney. When Drew bags the "turty pointer" he has been seeing, we should have this thing in the bag. As for T - he just has big deer, not big numbers of points!

Found some nice spots out in the Haymarsh state game area. It will be nice to do some hunting during the week now.

Koz- you said you went to Ferris so did you ever hunt the state game areas in Mecosta. I'm curious as to how much pressure they get during the bow season.

Yes - I used to hunt the haymarsh. My best spot in BG is where Meijers sits right now though. There were some dandy bucks in that area.

The Haymarsh was not overrun with hunters at all when I was there, and I would guess it is less so now. There are some excellent spots in this to hunt, but you have to do your homework. I only hunted it during the bow season, and can't recall ever seeing another hunter close by to me.

T Bagged a dandy doe this morning, so I am sure we will read about it sooner or later.

In the meantime, my ground is "overrun" with deer as the neighbors are all hunting and have pushed them all over there. SRO - Standing Room Only!

Thought about going out - then went and planted winter wheat again instead.:dizzy: Needed more food plots, I guess.

Good to know that the hunting pressure may be low in the Haymarsh. This week I brought up my kayak to scout out the Martiny state game area. There are definitely some good looking spots to hunt.
Looks like you invested a lot of time into those food plots, they look real good. It will be interesting to see what this year brings!

Well team true to my word I put a lady in the freezer this weekend and, to the best of my knowledge, this is the first deer for our team.
I went out Friday morning to a property I have permission to hunt on the south end of our co-op. I heard a few shots close by but didn't see anything. As I was parking my truck at home I noticed this gal and her companions behnd the garage thumbing their noses at me.
I showered up to head for work and as I was leaving the house another doe and fawn walked through the back yard so I quickly set up a pop up blind behind the garage for the Sat. am. hunt thinking surely I could sleep until dawn the stroll ou the 200 ft to the blind. WRONG, this gal and her companions were there to greet me and quickly left the vacinity. Rats!
Well I'm a quick study so I was in the blind by 6:30 and at 9:15 she ran by enroute to a bean field that adjoins my property. No shot oportunity.
About 2 minutes later her and her posse came back onto my property headed for a Clive Kravets Deluxe sleep system and I sent a 285 grain ballistic tip pushed by 100 grains of pyrodex through her chest.
I have been watching this doe for several years as she has taken up residence on my place and raised twins every yeear for the last 3 years that I'm aware of. Although I've been trying, somewhat, to take her over that time, the humiliation she caused me on Friday and Saturday steeled my resolve.
She field dressed 137# (on 2 different scales) and her lower jaw indicates she is 6 or older (to be confirmed).

Well, not a very exciting story, but it was a good evening none the less. I have been putting together my son's 3rd birthday party all weekend and we had that on Sunday. One of the activites for the kids, was a hayride in a trailer behind my quad. The path I was taking went right underneath my closest stand to the house. I wasn't even planning on hunting again until the 2nd week of October, so I though it wouldn't be a big deal.

The last ride went through there around 3:30pm and the last guest left around 5:00pm. I had the option to clean up the yard or go hunting, it was a real arm twister. So I decided to put a few hours in stand just so I wouldn't have to clean.

Walking back, I saw a couple of doe groups milling around in fron of my stand. I was actually pretty surprised with all the activity going on, but it's Jackson county, so we're not short on deer. But I waited about 25 minutes for them to move on out. The area has a bunch of dead leaves on the ground, so stalking them would of just spooked them off, I'm not very light on my toes. Got up in stand and about 15 minutes later a doe and 2 fawns came through, but she looked a little small, so I waited. I wasn't in a hurry and just enjoying my time. In another 15 minutes, the one I harvested came through alone at 20 yards. I shot and she ran about 30 yards into the swamp and expired there. All in all a good night, but it was a lot of work getting her into the cooler that night and finish cleaning up, but yes Koz, I did enjoy tenderloin at 10:00! ;)

Congrats QDMAMAN, she's a beauty.

Yeah it was late and she was excited as could be she even put on some gloves and helped me skin and quarter it until MOM made her go in. I had to keep telling her to hold on so I could get a pic for the site before we got it hung up.

Those Pink slippers had to be tossed she got them all covered in tallow and blood and MOM made her toss them out.

She will be out this Sunday on a squirrel hunt / scouting trip. I think I may get her to shoot the .22 a few times but she might decide she would rather use one of her bb or pellet guns. With me outside she does pretty good with the little red ryder making squirrels mad.:lol:

After I hit mine a woman stopped to check if things were all right. We BS's for a few while I was waiting for the police for a kill tag. After she pulled away, she hit one about 300 yards down the road from me and also killed it. No damage to her truck either.

After I was on the road again, i almost got a turkey that flew in front of the truck and then another deer ran in front of me after that. I've never had so many close calls in such a short space.

Good luck this week kids.
Heres your Gumbo recipe that you will get used to eating.

biggest pot you can find
8 quarts of water
salt
pepper
garlic powder
basil
deer tags you were not able to fill (wich means all of them)
simmer for 1 1/2 hours while dreaming of venison
turn on your favorite whitetail show to watch and enjoy your tag soup.)

Cass - your dreamin buddy, or you are messing with the wrong team. This team is made of MOJO not GUMBO!

Besides, I skipped opening day today and took the wife out for a romantic evening on the town instead. I am FOR SURE going to kill a giant this year, just because of doing that good deed.

BigT - thanks for the advice today, I am thinking that points I gained are going to score us big points this year on the team.

Ended up seeing 19 tonight (I'm sure a few were repeats) 4 different racked bucks...3 spikes and a 4 pt. probably could of took a couple different does, the one I wanted (DOZER) never stopped. Was basically covered up with deer from 3:30-7. Started to draw on another one when she looked down the trail, of course I turn to see spike #3 coming, go back to her and she was out of the window.....Rain never came, little breezy but still an awesome night in the tree....

Well, I did get a chance to meet with BigT today in Lansing, and he did some coaching with me. I left there a mile high, with the wind in my sails, and headed out tonight. Walked up a on a 6 on the way in tonight, let a beautiful 2 year old walk under my stand, and had a monster doe pull the old "6th sense" upwind of me at 20 yards, and busted me big time. Looks like I am going to have to drive back to Lansing for another coaching session!

Backwoods - your buck looks even better on my computer screen compared to my Blackberry! Congratulations!

Well, Horseshoe (Team 15) and I took a trip out to the deer shack today. Seemed to be pretty successful. Mine live weight of 139 lbs. Horseshoe shot the big *^$&% that busted me the other night. She was 169lbs live weight. We did our QDM for the season.

Pretty nice day to be in the field. We saw a total of 11 deer including 2 small bucks, one red fox and a couple of salmon running up the river.

Whew - now I can focus on hunting a big buck. It was a surgical strike today and worked out well. Can't wait until November 2nd to arrive.

Those pink stands that Cass suggested, really paid off!

I know Kim told you I was not getting a new bow till we paid off some bills so I will be hunting with my vintage Martin Pantara. I did how ever order some carbons and a release for this year.
I was thinking about going out this am but we did not get home from the football game till late. Go Bears!!!!! 6-0.The boy had to be in at 9 to lift weights so I stayed home to take him and get my fall honey do's done so I can hunt when the big boy's are moving;)

Bucky, you ain't getting a new bow, if she has her way with you.

I am shooting my "ancient" Hoyt Ultratec. That went out of style about 3 years ago. That Martin went out of style, about 25 years ago. Better start putting away, $5 here and there, and she will never know where the new bow came from for next season. I promise I won't tell!:D

This was my first deer with a 2 blade Rage. I have been a diehard Thunderhead guy. She was crossing the river under my stand, and we had a "crimson tide". :yikes: She went 40 yards. That was the long blood trail of the day.

You better get your butt out there and get some points. You are running out of time!

Hey guys anybody seein any nice bucks. It seems as the bucks are everywhere around here this year. This weekend i think i am gonna try for a doe. Hopefully this weekend we can get some more points on the board to take our spot back.

I haven't seen a lot of deer lately, but yesterday morning my patience got the best of me. Yesterday morning I decided to finally hunt a funnel where I crossed a big track while scouting. I was going to get down from my stand at 9am since I had class to go to. I didn't see anything all morning and the wind was picking up so I decided it was time to leave. The actual time was 8:51am (still engraved in my mind). I got everything packed away and lowered my bow down. As soon as it hit the bottom a deer took off from my right. I just figured it was a doe and didn't think to much of it. Well it happened to be one of the larger bucks I've seen over the years on state land. It was only about 10 yards away when it took off, but it stopped at about 20 yards and just stared at my bow, then it took off through the funnel. If I only would have waited that 9 more minutes......I guess that's hunting.
I'm going to give it a couple weeks before I head back there again, maybe he'll show up again

Anyone else able to make it out lately?

Quack Quack!! Kind of bluebird weather, isn't it, for ducks??

We have officially reached the "quiet zone" for big bucks. You can shoot all the little bucks you want this time of the year, but from now until Halloween, things might be a little quiet. That is, unless we get a major cold front for a few days. Building brownie points at home right now by the thousands.

Clay, there is one issue here that I see that got in the way. CLASS. FWIW - I generally do not see any deer before 9 AM. So the answer is for you to skip class to go. I used to do just that, and it landed me a job running a company!

I already tried the selective attendance approach earlier in college. I'm now going on my 6th year in college, so that approach didn't work out so well :).

I learned another lesson though. People always told me never get married during hunting season, but no one ever told me never to get engaged before hunting season. I recently got engaged about a month ago and I never took into account that I would have to go visit halls and caterers on the weekends :(. I would say I'm building up brownie points too, but I swear I never see them!

If anyone's lucky enough to get out good luck!

I hope that Team 13 does not shoot him and take the 5 points for a doe!

Yikes - we could sure use the points.

Hopefully you have video of the doe, the tag and the weapon.

I am not an expert at all, but I can think of four options.

1 - you load the video on your computer, and then freeze frame it and save it as a jpg file.

2 - you play the video on your TV and pause it and take a photo with a digital camera (don't laugh, I have done that before and it works)

3 - you get someone who has a video camera that can load onto a computer and you retape it while it is on your TV playing. (done that one too and it works)

4 - you upload the file to YouTube and then post the link, although Kelly might give you a hard time about that one.

5 - you shoot another doe and take your camera with you this time:evil:

Let us know if there is anything we can do to help. You might want to call your local camera shop or find someone that is knowledgeable to help.

Congrats on the doe! Way to go racking up the points for us. Koz

Cass - first of all - AWESOME DUDE! That is a nice doe. It is hard to believe that YOU actually whacked it. Very impressive food plot in the background by the way, now I know you are my idol.

Nice arrrow placement as well. That aside for a moment.

How do you think that WE came about being on a team together. The whole Team 23 that is???? We know the judges! They are paid off. That is how the world works. Once you are done with college you will learn that.

So, chances are not good that you will be able to walk away with 5 points on this one, unless you are willing to put up some money for all members of Team 23! This is not a bribe, we are just looking for a token of gratitude for allowing you the opportunity to participate in our thread by posting here.

The decision, is really up to you. Do you bend the rules, and pay us off, or do you take a pass, and realize that sometimes in life, small details will muttle even the greatest successes?

The whole thing smell of rotten fish. I just can't believe Cass is willing to risk his stellar reputation on this site for a measly 5 pt. doe.
I think that the judges will see right through this charade and justice will be done. Sure will miss having Cass participating in the contest.

Figured they were at about 50yds when I let one fly, right underneith  turned out to be 58! My weekend was filled with "huny do chores" - spent 9 hours on Saturday hanging a new light fixture in our 2.5 story foyer. It only weighed about 120 lbs, so not too bad!

I purposely had to hold myself back from going out this weekend. I know what is out there, and I am not at all convinced I am going to get him or one of his buddies until after Halloween, and there is no sense in educating him before the rut. We are just 2 weeks away from the action. Can't wait!

Seeing a lot of deer being hit along side the road, so they are starting to move down here!

Does anyone know the laws on taking antlers from a car killed buck? I found a 120" 8 pointer this weekend, will easily dress out over 200#s. I left him be, as it is not worth getting a fine for taking his antlers. He was spoiled already, so no one would want him to eat.

Got to go back to work.

What would be ideal, is if the police would just issue some of them like they do hunting tags. You could get them in advance. Then you would not have to call them to get it.

Well, maybe not. People would be loading the truck with flashlights and a 30 pak and cruising the roads looking for deer.:xzicon_sm

Or, they just allow you to take a picture with your phone, and e-mail it to them and they send you an E-mail confirmation back that it is ok to take it.

For the deer you are rattling in, those 120" rattling antlers would be on the small size. For me, I am looking for a buck like the one in my avatar. You just click them together and he is out of there! However, a couple more years and he could really be a giant!

Some good advice on how to trick the police into responding sooner. Did you learn that at school??

They travel great distances! Iowa, born and raised in Michigan. Left the state though, once he knew how long the seasons are here and the lack of antler restrictions.

Big T and I both had great mornings out this morning, but nothing to show for our efforts. T saw a couple of bucks, and a few does and I saw 13 does this morning all within bow range. Captain - there was a big gal, like you are looking for, at the base of my tree steps for almost 30 minutes at 9 AM. I also had your turkeys in at 20 yards, but no long beards.

As I was walking into one of my hotspots this morning I smelled the distinct odor that can only mean DEATH:yikes:! 12 paces from the base of my tree was this little fella. The coyotes have had their way with him. No telling how far he travelled to get there, I just hope it was a long ways. Pretty decent genetics. He created a lot of curiousity for the deer that came through and for the turkeys.

Well, passed up a couple of 8's this morning. They hung around my stand in bow range for 1 hour and 40 minutes. Not exactly what I was after, but getting really, really close. Got some awesome video, including the 2.5 year old one raking a few trees. Definitely not in the chase mode yet.

Koz.... i am all about let em go let em grow.. trust me on that one... but 1 might be in Colorado next year  and 2 we might not even get that lease next year:lol:... thats why they were looking mighty good....

if i shoot a little buck this year... those will be the reasons... before last year (yes i know they werent HUGE deer i got but they were nice!!!

i went buckless for 2 years prior to that passing all these little bucks.... so you would think there would be monsters running around this year right? nope not around my area man... im only hunting 40 acres here and there with yahoos like casscity on our fence lines november 15th..... if i had land like im guessing you have i would have no problem passing deer like i took last year:)
but you have to have it to get it.... in other words you have to have good QDMA in the area or good land or both and we dont have either.... just us... and yes we have tried to talk to the neighbors.... they are meat hunters.... a mile or so away though is a group of guys that own a whole section and that is where all the big boys come from but we always have to wait for the rut...

why arent you out hunting? too windy?

Hawk - I do not have a lot of land, 100 is all, but it is a well designed 100 and is setup with everything thing they need to stay put. I do not have any neighbors who are QDMA bound, but I am working on that. In the meantime, I spend 365 days a year working the habitat, cover, travel lanes, etc..making it a place that they want to stay. I also have neighbors that watch my ground like a "hawk" and if anyone steps foot on it, they are likely to be in big trouble. I also have great neighbors in that regard as well.

I know the feeling of waiting it out for a big one. Last year I passed on countless bucks waiting for the one that I took. I had one other chance at a big one but could not get him to stop.

Anyway, I am not out today, mainly due to the wind, but when things get "right" I will be back at it. Good luck to you, and I understand your dilemma, but hang in there, a big one will come. When you move to CO, I am sure we will get a chance at some game together out there. I am looking forward to it, I have a great place for Merriams, and I am thinking of getting Big T out there as well, I want to shoot one with my bow, and I know you do as well, so we willl hook up at some point and getterdone!

good luck... hope ya get da turdy pointer and that would be a blast to go out for turkey and other such game with you guys! we seem to have enough fun on these boards.... cass cant come though

Koz,
I sure hope she's wearing designer scent lok.:yikes:
Good looking rub BTW!
I spent the weekend in the U.P. and saw 1 doe on Sunday morning about 30 minutes after a blonde colored coyote slinked by. We had a great trip and it was good to hear the silence of the big woods for a couple days.

KOZ,
I'm sorry to report that one of your bucks escaped the KozyMoto deer sanctuary:yikes: One of my guy's uncle hit an 8 point Saturday evening:sad: It was a big bodied deer but not a huge rack. He is tiring to get pictures so you can identify it. "THIS IS A TRUE STORY NO "BS" THIS TIME" I will email you if we can get the pictures.

Bucky, I have run my cell phone out of minutes the past few days, trying to find out about that deer and what it was. All I had to go on, was a big bodied buck, with his head cut off! It has been killing me.

Was he travelling from the south to the north??

Same thing happened last year, in the same location, and the deer survived, and I never saw him again. That one was over 150.

Can you get me a picture, or at least a description, so I can cross him off the shooter list????:dizzy:

I have property scouts everywhere, guarding my land, and none of them could give me a description of his head gear. Sounds like I can at least quit losing sleep over him, but I would love to see the picture or at least get a look at the rack. Thanks for the heads up that you have info.

I pulled a muscle in my shoulder Friday night and I can barely lift my arm now. Went to the doctor on Monday and got some meds and seeing a physical therapist tomorrow. It's been getting better each day, so we'll see. If not, I'll have to rely on gun season

I'm optimistic though. If I can at least pull my bow back, which I may drop the poundage on it, then I'll at least hunt from the ground. If I can climb back up in a tree, all the more better. Happy hunting to the rest of you!

Sorry to hear that. Captain may chose to put you on the DL and add this guy, FreePops workmate, to our team.

I am putting my money on Boogemaster. He can get more points than that! That buck wasted his age and size on a measily 8 point rack!

T - He has 5 arrows in his quiver. I could of used that 5th arrow this morning! I am sure that the 5th shot would of been the charm! I was just getting warmed up.

Wow, we got a rough crowd in here ;)

I went to the doc again this morning and things are looking good. No tearing, just a pulled muscle :woohoo1:

I need to take it easy for a couple of days and I should be back in stand on Sunday. I did spy the big guy again last week, he's still around!

Just taking my licks, and keep on licking! Don't worry, it was not the turdy pointer! These fellas had spurs, and carried black bearded looking things down the front of them. At 10 AM I gave in, and could not stand it anymore.

William Tell? No. Humbling, just humbling! I have always considered myself a good shot. I probably am, I just did not have enough arrows with me to prove it.

Rack us up some points boys...;) After a pretty uneventful October, things lit up for us this weekend. We were all seeing bucks throughout our 160 acres, all searching. One of my objectives this year in Michigan was to get off a long archery shot in preparation for Iowa in couple weeks. Well this little 2 year old 9 point decided to stop broadside at 36 yds and I figured he would fit the bill and gives us some much needed points. Pics forthcoming

Great news Captain! More points for the good guys! Congratulations!

Big T has been helping me keep my spirits up this weekend. Suffering a bad cold, so that is not helping. I sat two times without seeing any deer, and did see some does tonight, but no chasing. Had a big bruin (never got to see his antlers though) raking a few trees through the thick stuff about 50 yards from me tonight.

It normally is on fire for me starting on the 3rd, and at the moment, it is not going as planned. Not much happening and in fact the bucks are still grouped up as of this morning. Things will change though. It is still really early. I have the whole week off and I hope I am feeling better and can get back out.

Congrats again - whack a doe and you will be our hero!!!

Congrats captain. I had an 8 pt yesterday morning I blew my shot low on. I've never had buck fever before, but it hit me on this one. I underestimated the yardage, but I will be back out again this weekend. I'm going to try and squeeze a couple of mornings in during the week if my boss is in the right mood. things are definately heating up now.
