Banner looks great. Thanx for your efforts spitfire. I figured i would take the time from here on to post my weekend experiences.

This weekend - rain. i did have 2 does and 4 fawns vacuum the lawn of apples yesterday morning. Spots are fading pretty fast. I walked out to my little foodplot, and there is a fresh rub on a tree about 5 inches in diameter just off the trail on the way out. Encouraging.

I am not participating in the EAS. I do have a ute (yoothe) coming the following weekend, and he will be abiding by the 8 point or better, no doe rule. And when he is done hunting in the morning, he will be grabbing a roller and helping me paint the cabin. Seems like a fair trade to me.

Good luck everyone.

I hope i meet you guys before the season is over. I do have a question. For the afternoon hunt, i generally climb into my tower overlooking my 1/8 acre of whitetail clover. I remove my quiver from my bow and take out a couple arrows and set it in the corner. Then i open my custom cabinet in the corner and remove the following items: jar of anchovy stuffed olives, martini glass with a really cool swirly pattern in the stem, and bottle of stoli. I enjoy my adult beverage until nothing is left but the anchovy stuffed olives. Then i savor the anchovies and throw the empty olive out into the whitetail clover. Then i repeat as necessary (making sure that i never reach the point of being under the influence). My question is this:

Am i allowed to throw the empty olive into the clover anymore? Or do i have to eat it?

Bow - Browning Mag Reflex
Gun - scoped Savage 20 gauge pump

I have been troubled by this. Don't want to break the law. In the meantime, i spoke with my neighbor who lives there and he told me that even though there is little interest in the EAS (locally), the word is out to remove the females from the population. I just purchased a ghillie suit and i may roam a little more than usual. Never know. May put 5 points up before i expected to.

Worked on the cabin. Wasn't going to hunt, period. Then my buddy who helped me build the place shows up with an antlerless tag (i didn't think he would show). He arrives at 6:45, and at 7:15 we go sit in a pair of lawnchairs in the middle of my driveway, which is about 3/8 of a mile of mowed two track. After about 1 minute, 2 deer appear in the lane about 100 yards away and i put the scope on them. 2 young bucks (spikes). My buddy says let me see (he had no scope on his H&R). While checking them out, big momma steps out at 50 yards and fills the scope. Take her, i tell him. Boom. Right in the heart. Hunt duration - 3 minutes.

No points for our team, but no worries. Just finished eating some straps with a little Montreal seasonings and fresh mushrooms and mashed potatoes. Doesn't get much better.

Fresh rubs starting to appear in the usual spots. I have high hopes on them.

Ute did not make it due to health issues. No hunting this past weekend. As for sightings - loads. The one shot a week ago did little to change them from summer habits. Lane is full of deer in late afternoon. Certain spots in the woods are getting browsed pretty heavily. Food plot is getting significant traffic. This past weekend was my last work weekend. Painted the cabin exterior. I expect to be hunting every weekend morning and evening from here on through. And early in the season, there's going to be alot of sleeping in between. Good luck to all. I will report in weekly.

Turned out to be a good morning with no rain but a little windy.I seen six deer total with two being bucks. Both bucks were small, spike and a 4 pointer within 25 yards. At 9:00 am a nice doe worked her way down the trail towards a bedding area and I was able to make a quartering away shot with Rage broadhead. The shot was perfect hitting behind the shoulder and up into the opposite shoulder but no pass through. The deer expired within 60 yards but I must say I was not happy with the performance with this broadhead. I will tell more on this later with pics but I will be back to my Spitfires from now on. We have points on the board team which is a good thing ;). Good luck all!

Nothing Saturday morning. Decided to mix it up for the evening and put on my ghillie suit. Headed to the hedgerow, which is 200 yards east of my woods. Between me and the hedgerow is 100 yards of corn, then 100 yards of beets. Followed a trail through the corn (not difficult) and when i hit the beets I noticed a truck in the hedgerow. Dammit. Headed north through the corn 3 rows in, and came upon a 50 foot by 50 foot clearing in the corn where the deer have it ripped up. I remained standing 3 rows in and about 10 stalks in and had an great view of the north end of the beet field.

Long story short of it, I haven't shot a buck in the last 2 years, and it's not for lack of opportunity. I saw 10 different bucks in the beet field for over an hour, which included 2 pretting good sparring sessions between a couple of 4's and 6's. I thought they may be feeding until i heard the click click. I also saw 1 extremely large bodied buck which had at least 8 points. Tall and wide with real white antlers. Kinda hard to count points, because the closest any of them ventured was 100 yards. This buck was not the 10 that i saw vacuuming apples a month ago. I will also add that none of the yearling bucks came close to him and he did not approach them. He kept his distance. Probably smelling me.

Sunday morning - slept in. Sunday evening - 2 does that never offered a shot and a large deer that never came close enough to identify.

I am convinced that not shooting small bucks for the last 2 years has resulted in this experience. I wish i brought a camera. Downside - no points for our team. The goal is to move us up quickly rather than 5 points at a time. It's early. I'm trying.

No fear Cmark, your time will come. I havent seen anything since the opener and im kind of glad I chose the oppertunity when it presented itself but I found an erea that im hunting the fringes of to observe before I move in tight to intercept. I come accross some huge tracks of a buck but I dont want to pressure to much till the end of the month. I am off from work from 10/25 to 11/6 so I hope to get some good hunting during that time. If I dont tag the big boy by the end of that time I may have to settle for smaller for the points . I will be able to get some morning hunts in next week before work during the week. I always seem to see more during weekdays versus weekends.

I didn't hunt this weekend. My wife and I spent the time with our son who is attending MTU.

I will be in the trees this coming weekend then off the next. I do plan on hunting most of the month of November.

First things first, way to go Arrow Hawk! Kick a## and take names! Things were kind of slow for me this weekend. Had a decent amount of sightings, including a nice 6 that simply would not come closer than 50 yards. But everything else was hunkered down by 9:00 am, and the evening action didn't start until the last half hour or so of light. My neighbor came over and asked permission to park his quad by my pond and walk my edge to the far side of the property so he didn't spook everything between his backyard and his blind. I told him no problem. He proceeded to tell me of a funky looking doe that he has nicknamed eeyore because she has one floppy ear. He also told me that she will be one of the first to go. Anyways, last nite i braved the damn bald faced hornets (they truly are annoying) and sat in one of my ladder stands. I had a tough time at first differentiating between falling leaves and anything else, but about 15 minutes of light left i heard the cadence of a few deer heading my way. First one - baby. Second one - Momma. Heard more rustling and prepared myself in the hopes it was a decent buck. It took forever for this deer to get into my shooting lane. It was eeyore. First time I have seen her, and the names appropriate. Anyways, I went to full draw for probably 30 seconds before i let off. Sunday night, work @6 am Monday, still have to drive home after tracking/finding/gutting/dragging/ and getting the bastard in my truck alone. And i didn't have it in me to take this deer at that time. A nice buck and it would have been no question. So I passed. No points. But I have next Monday off, then October 30th through November 3rd. I will try and take care of business by then.

Posted pictures of my Buck but entered it as a 10 point since I measured the one point and it was only 3/4 of an inch long making it only 10 points.

I had this guy come in behind me and work a scrape 15 yards behind me and then he came in to my left and started working another scrape 20 yards away giving me a shot. After the shot I checked my phone for the time and it was 7:32 am and I also had a missed call at 7:31 which was from my father in law. I called him back to find out that he had also shot a Buck. We waited for a buddy to show up and went to track his first. After finding the blood trail which was small spots we found his arrow broken in half. After awhile on this very faint blood trail we realized the Buck was heading straight for me and we realized we bothe shot the same Buck, We were sitting about 250 yards apart. Once we got to where he was standing we started to find some really good blood but the trail was long. We tracked him for over a mile. As we entered some thick cover we jumped him and watched him go alittle ways and then gotout of there. We came back an hour later and ended up finding him another 100 yards from where we jumped him. My arrow entered just behind the rib cage on the right side and broke his left leg. The arrow pulled back into the chest cavity and was still there when we found him. My father in law shot wasn't a kill shot since it was in the rear end and about 3 inches from a miss.

I noticed alot of fresh scrapes and rubs on the 18th the same day dsconnell and casscity were posting pic of the same thing in their hunting erea.We both are hunting Livingston county so something was in the air getting the Bucks amped up. I hunted the weekend with no action but found a real hot spot that had to be hunted, which made me take the day off from work Monday. I hunted the morning till 9:00 am with no deer seen and came home to take the twins to gymnastics class. i wanted to hunt the new hot erea that evening but the winds out of the west was no good for this spot, so I hunted the stand I took a doe out of on Oct 1st.
It took me a couple years to fine tune this stand from previous hunts watching deer filter through this erea, and watching a nice ten point in this spot that never came close enough to me a couple years ago. With that being said im in my stand at 4:00 and shortly after it starts to drizzle rain with Westerly winds in my favor. At 5:00 it starts raining pretty hard and im getting soaked thinking about heading in, but I said screw it im allready wet and took the day off from work so lets see what happens.
What happens next came so fast I never really had time to think about it. At around 6:00 I see a buck closing fast at 80 yards and from the time I stood up in my stand and came to full draw he was within 15 yards of me. I was getting ready to try to stop him but he stopped on his own to smell a trail that led into a bedding erea. He didnt stop in one of my shooting lanes but I had an opening between two limbs that was about 6" wide that offered a broadside shot. I aimed shot and followed through, watching my spitfire tipped arrow connect perfectly behind the shoulder with a complete pass through. The buck jumped but didnt run and I watched him get weak in knees and fall over at 30 yards! It was so awsome to harvest this animal with a quick and clean shot and watch it go down.
Heres some pics enjoy.

Way to go Spitfire!!! I better get my act in gear. I hunted as hard as i have so far this weekend, and everything just sucked. Sightings were way down, and the sightings I had were all way far away, except for a button buck that actually was rubbing his head against my ladder of the ladder stand. That was a first. Other than that, my son Matthew came down from LSSU and hunted my normal stand Saturday evening, and counted no less than 32 deer, of which he says 2 were genuine bruisers. So the big guys are still out there, but nobodies tagged one yet. I'm still trying guys.

whats the hunting been like for the team?
I allmost scored on a bruiser buck on the evening od Nov 2nd. I had him at 15 yards facing me working a scrape but didnt offer a shot. He got nervous and I think winded me a little and backed out the way he came. He didnt spot me so I may still have a chance only if the rite wind lets me hunt it again. I need a East wind or NE wind to hunt it or I will get busted. It was a SE wind that day and I pushed it and lost. I showered and wore scent loc before I hunted but couldn't close the deal. I hunted this spot the next morning and passed on a huge doe with twins at 5 yards, one of them a button buck. At 8:30 I see 7 deer(5 does 2 buttons) coming my way and came within 15 yards offering a couple shots but chose to wait it out hoping they would bring the buck back from previous nite. One of the does circled down wind of me and got nervous, she didnt stomp or blow but didnt go to bed in the thicket I was hunting. She backed out and took the rest of them with her. I still had hopes of seeing buckzilla since the three deer from earlier were bedded down in the thicket I was hunting but he never came and I hunted till noon. I cant push this spot again and must wait till the winds are rite or I will fudge it up big time.If this buck makes it till next year I can only imagine how nice he will be. I hunted this morning out of a diffrent stand and seen nothing but it was wonderfull just being out,I love this time of year.Good luck team and hope to hear of someones success soon ;).

God I love deer hunting.

Different day, different stand, same doe and two fawns. Had what I thought was a clear, 30 yard, quartering away shot through a good opening in some minimul brush. I took the shot and half way to the doe the arrow make a slight right turn and goes over her head.:tdo12:
The doe and her fawns run about 10 yards, stop and look around, then continue down the trail as if nothing happened. I look back to where the doe was standing when I released and I could see a small twig swaying back and forth. That's a first for me. Never saw the twig. Well, that twig no longer exists. I checked all of my other shooting lanes as well.

Bow hunting the 8th-10th then back for the firearm opener. I hope the rest of the team has better luck than mine has been so far.

Well team, i have been seeing alot, but nothing significant has come withing range. I have mixed it up for a few weeks now, but still have had zero success on anything larger than a basket 6 come within range. This deer has decided that he wants to be friends with me and must know that he doesn't qualify just yet. Probably the most interesting thing that has happened was last Saturday evening. A good sized button buck walked into range and bedded down not 10 feet from the base of my stand. He stayed for over an hour chewing his cud while his momma meandered about at 30 yards (a bit far for me). There is an apple tree right next to my stand and when it got dark, i plucked one of the remaining apples and tossed it on top of him just to get him leave. It worked. Anyways, i am leaving for Indiana (work) and will return Thursday evening. I leave for the opener after work Friday for 4 days. 2 of my 3 boys are coming down from college to spend the weekend and hopefully tag something. Just wanted to say good luck to all, shoot straight, be safe, and have fun. I will post when I return next week.

My wife Tues nite tells me that our sitters for our twins were having some money issues due to cut backs at their source of income(which alot of people are feeling in this State). She takes over a few bags of groceries and I tell her that if I get the chance,I will try to get a deer for them also.
Wed morning I was in my stand at 6:45 waiting for daylight, hopeing for the best.At 7:30 I had a 3 point sneek in behind me(was a 6 but one antler was broke off) and walk by me at 5 yards and check a scrape.8:30 rolls around and I spot a buck about 60 yards away quartering away behind me.I stand up in my climber to try to grunt at him and by this time hes 80 yards away. I grunt at him and no response,I do it a little louder and same thing no response. The third time I hit it alot louder and he stops, looks my way and starts coming. He gets to within 50 yards from me and starts browsing, thats when I notice to my left another buck. This ones about 100 yards away moving no where near me.I try grunting to that buck also but it didn't hear me and vanished. Now the one that was closer starts coming to me like a little lost puppy and walks rite by me at 5 yards. At this point I decide to take him if the shot presents itself, which it did at 18 yards. The buck turns broadside in front of me(offering a shot even Casscity and HunterHawk could hit, maybe :D:p).I put my pin on him, release the shot and watch my fletching disappear into the boiler room. The buck bolts to my left and I watch him get weak in the knees and tip over at 30 yards.I felt a little guilty at first because I have been passing these young bucks but at the same time felt good for where he was going. After I gave this deer to our sitters and seen how happy they were to receive it,made the hunt that much more enjoyable.I feel blessed to have had a good season this year and am looking forward to 2009.
Good luck team shoot straight and most of all be safe.

Well, I waited until pretty much the last minute, but I finally took one with the crossbow during the early bow season at 5 p.m. 11/14. I wasn't even going to hunt that evening but a friend talked me into getting out for the last 1-1/2 hours. 45 minutes later this doe walks in alone just over 30 yards out. I put the pin behind her shoulder and hit the release. She jumped, spun around and ran back down the trail she came in on. The arrow took out both lungs and she dropped 90 yards down the trail.
Now that the skunk is out of the camp, I can get down to some serious hunting.
