Anyone else going out for the early anlerless season?
I am heading up Friday night. I'll hunt with the bow so I can enter a doe (or especially for QDMAMAN a 1.5 year old with less than 3 inch antlers :D) into the contest! After that I will be back up to hunt the first 5 days of the opener.

Going to try and make it out for the early season...not sure how it will work out but hopefully I will be able to post after a successful hunt.

...When does the early doe season start and finish. .
Kelly gave a good answer to this quest in another thread....
Not a full week but yes, there's an early antlerless in the SLP and a few of the Eastern NLP DMUs
http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10363_38954_38957-197505--,00.html
Early Firearm Antlerless Deer Hunting License - 2008
An early firearm antlerless deer hunting season will take place on private land in some Lower Peninsula DMUs from Sept. 18 through Sept. 22, 2008. The DMUs that will be open are shaded on the map below. You must possess a valid private land antlerless deer license or DMA permit issued for the DMU in which you are hunting to take a deer during this season. You also must have permission from the landowner or leaseholder before hunting on private land, and the telephone number of the private landowner is required to acquire a private land antlerless deer license. You may not bait for deer during the early firearm antlerless deer hunting season. All firearm hunters must be 12 or older and must wear Hunter Orange. Youths 10 and 11 are restricted to archery-only hunting, and must possess a private land antlerless license or DMA permit and must wear Hunter Orange. Archery and junior archery deer licenses are not valid for this hunt.

Moved some stands tonight! Found some nice buck sign things are looking good for this year. Also seen 5 different bucks of which three where shooter quality. One had a really nice rack was out past his ears visibly at 100 plus yards. He had a good size body on him. The other two where typical 8 pts with 12 to 14in spreads, but good tine length. Also one of the smaller bucks still had velvet on his rack.

sounds good bow...we've got a few on camera but there always a lot of 120" running around..Not sure how many got taken, but we counted 10-12 bucks over 120 including a 140, and 155-160 that we know made it through winter, hopefully cars too..this is the 4th year of the 120" rule so big bucks are starting to pop around more often..well off to bed!

yea its a good piece of land that has a 80 acre catail marsh that holds pretty much every scared or shot at deer..Its nice and we dont ever go in there...Im geeked after seeing some of the cameras and deer taken in the previous years..This is my second year there and last year i had the "bad luck" of sitting in one stand and seeing shooters walk under the other one i choose not to sit in:(...but yea im heading out with DSCONNELL tomorrow for a doe(he's gunna film it) and hopefully we'll be on the board early..well ill ttyl going to class now..

I tried putting the camera out, since I'm down to one after getting one lifted last year. I've got a moultrie that keeps turning itself off. I guess I'm going to have to send it in. Bonus check shows up at the end of the month debating on a couple of new stands or a camera and a stand. Probably shouldn't buy anything since bonus check is kinda week this quarter and the wife found the new scope. Cass I think you need to take me hunting because my property is mediocre at best, I haven't seen alot of good bucks since my trip to N. Dakota and that was two years ago.

Good Luck Joe.
Casscityalum, no luck with a doe this morning. I see that you didn't get one, but your buddy did get one from your stand. I know you were trying to film it, but thats why your buddy offered to film your hunt so his brother could get one from your stand. I think it was their property so I guess I would have had to do the same thing. Now lets stop helping out the other teams.:lol:
I'm going to try and get out tomorrow night, and will be out this weekend.:):)

Sunday I went and seen 7 different bucks and 1 doe with 2 yearlings and she was not much bigger than the yearlings so she got a free pass. Now we wait until October 1st, and hope that one of the good bucks I seen show up.:):)

Good news and bad news....
The deer that were on my property really spent a lot of time there. During 4 sits (approximately 12 hours) I watched deer for about 5 1/2 hours! The bad news is that it was the same 4 deer. There were two doe; one was a 2.5 year old with a fawn in the process of being weaned. The other was a 1.5 year old who was moving with a young buck who was probably her twin. On multiple occasions I had these deer within 5 yards of me as they worked their way through the oaks on my property. The 1.5 year old buck was in velvet and that was really cool to see. In general, I had a really nice time watching deer and it was great to be in the woods. I just didn't see anything at the right time for me to decide to put an arrow in. I won’t shoot the doe with that young of a fawn. I know some do, but I just don’t. Also, I didn't really want to track at night just yet because I would guess that I have a few more deer hitting the oaks after dark.
In any case, I set up two more stands for my sons and I can't wait to get back up there for the opener!

.....anyways good luck guys hope to hear good news from Joe....
I got back yesterday evening after hunting Wednesday - Sunday morning. Wednesday and Thursday I was seeing a few deer moving through my property (2 adult doe and one fawn). My oldest son and father came up Thursday to join my youngest son and myself. The deer movement really slowed after that. It was so slow that Saturday afternoon I decided to set my stand up on state land. I usually don't set up out there until November. I didn't see anything on State land either Sunday morning.
All in all, for the 5 days I passed up chances at a 2.5 year old with a fawn and a very small 1.5 year old doe who was almost begging me to give her a good one! :D
It is early yet.... I might head up this coming weekend if my daughter feels like going with me.
Good luck all!

No luck for me either. Went out Saturday and seen about 30 total for the day but most of them were 300 yards from me. 1 spike made it about 100 yards from me, 2 button bucks within 10 yards, figures no shooters. Sunday was a big skunk for me. Going out again Wednesday afternoon, then the weekend. Good luck team.

Went out Friday afternoon and spent all the time swatting at mosquitoes, Saturday I went and bought a Thermacell, no more mosquitoes but still no deer either. Ok well I went over to Lowell area the other weekend to help my buddy out with his farms doe problem..Well I got settled into the stand at about 5:00 and wind was a blowing..Im hunting in a wooden stand with a deck/wood fence around it between two trees about 20 feet up..Im sitting there and the woods is starting to get darker..I text my bud who had to do farm chores if he see's any deer across the road in his hay field..He says no and its too early yet still..This is about 6:15..soon as I go to text him back this doe comes in by herself..Check her with the binocs and make sure its not a button..Hits the four wheeler trail about 20 yards and turns to come down it right in front of me..she stopped and looked once but then got behind a few trees, drew back and let the grim reaper do its job....she starts running a U..smacks a tree hard and I think shes done for..then a min later I see her cross the trail again and go back towards where she popped out..Then lost sight of her...
After I get down my arrow is sticking in the ground bubbly blood but white hair....Im not seeing any blood right there so I pull out and decide to come back about a half hour later...We get back and I go to the last spot I see her cross the trail..Find blood and easy 10 yards later there she lies..Shot was a little low I thought but I got top of the heart and both longs..Perfect shot and I was one happy camper..I just put a drop away rest on my bow and switched to Easton Epics with the little blazer vanes..Gotta love them..So heres a pic i got thus far..

Well hope all is going well for the rest of the team, I haven't hunted much at all. Work is getting in the way of everything right now! Company has the full court press on all us reps. I've done some hunting, haven't seen much. Passed on three small bucks and got busted on Saturday trying to draw done on a doe 13yds from my stand. I've mostly been hunting a fence row and those deer sneak up on me so fast before I see them I hardly have time to get my bow down. I moved some stands around Saturday, I haven't seen anything bigger than a little fork-horn. I have one spot I'm saving for the rut, I should have a stand up this weekend for that spot. My spot in marshall I think gets screwed up from the rabbit guys, working their dogs. They are out every Sat and Sun. Next year I'm not pre- scouting I always see nice bucks in Sept and nothing during the season.

Well I've been out a few times seeing deer (bucks and does) the only ones giving me a shot opportunity are the bucks. Their only 1 1/2 bucks 7/6/4/spike there is a busier around the area so I just letting the little guys get comfortable enough to bring mr. big around when the time is right (hopefully). The does haven't given me a shot opportunity yet, I swear they are harder to kill than bucks.
I took a few days off because we had to put our dog down:sad: Bronx was a gift my wife and I bought together right after we got engaged. I tell you what, it is incredible hard to lose a dog. So because of that I didn't have the heart to hit the woods until last night.
We have bow camp starting tomorrow so hopefully I'll add some points for our team. Good luck guys.

223369 - Sorry to hear about the dog. I went through that last winter. What a kick in the sack. My thoughts go out to you.
I haven't made it into a tree yet. Twice I have drove out there hoping it wasn't raining there, but it was... Seeing a lot of deer, including some nice bucks, however I lost a buck a few years ago and am doing everything I can to not let that happen again. So...if it's a raining, I ain't a hunting.
Maybe this weekend...

Ive been hunting pretty hard but I need the CORN GONE!!! There's a crap ton around and the thing with are piece is that once the corns gone the cover changes and deer then move into our land for the rest of season..Its some of the thickest cattail/marsh around and deer love it...but with the hundreds of acres of corn up in between us and out neighbor's woods the deer don't need to move this far over yet..
But now the good news..Me and DSConnell have been hunting hard with him filming me..Sunday we seen 3 bucks all after 10..one nice 12-14" wide 8 that stayed out of range but was chasing some tail..The night was spent dealing with trespassers..dirtbike..then to windy so we set up Pop up blind and had a small 6 come in..
Won't be back out till weekend..Good luck everyone else

Well folks time has come....time that I had to head home the thumb away from my lease..I had to trailer the motorcycle home....did get out last night at our familys little race horse farm..got in the stand late(4:30) and seen 4 does..I did do some grunting and can bleat and had something charge through the woods..just wood not come out
this morning..I slept past my alarm and got out to the stand at 7:10a.m!:yikes: I had three does and one possible buck out in my hayfield bout 100 yards from my stand..so i had to sit on the fence row till they entered the corn before I snuck down into my stand..So about 8:30 I hit the rattleing bag and calls and within 2 minutes had a 4 point come busting out of the corn field and into my hay field..Grunted and called him over to me..If I would of been sitting in my dads latter stand 50 yards due north of me I would had a shot..It was neat seeing the way he acted cause this is the only place I've had success rattling in deer..It was soon as I put the bag away sat down and look boom here is this buck running towards me:SHOCKED:
But sorta glad I didnt get the chance cause there is a big one out there..All i know is my gramps said he has been out i the infield of our track(A race horse farm with a 1/2 mile track) with a doe the past 2 mornings. Gramps doesn't hunt but said all he can see is horns glistening in the sun :D...only sad part is I think this will be my last time at our farm till thanksgiving since Ill be back to the lease and MSU..

He is most likely a 3.5 year old, but didn't score real high. He had just under a 15 inch spread, but broke off two points on one side. Unfortunately, I entered this contest as "Bow Only", so my November 15th buck doesn't do our team any good.
About the best I can do is enter the 5 point buck I took off of my property on November 10th. The local DNR office aged him at 2.5 years old. He came into my doe bleat seconds after I urinated from my tree stand. He crossed my shooting lane at about 17 yards quartering away. My arrow went in at the last rib on his right side and exited about 2 inches behind the far shoulder. He ran about 50 yards, stopped, and I got to watch him crash right there! Here is a pick of him where he fell.

Here is a pic of my opening morning buck. I moved out to to my favorite State land spot on the 12th of November and didn't see squat in 3 days. To make a long story short; this guy came in just before 11:00 am. grunting in response to (you guessed it) my doe bleat after I urinated from my stand. I ate his heart for dinner that night! :corkysm55 ... and yes, he has a brow tine on the right side that you can barely see in the pic... but I guess it doesn't matter anyway; are we not the Rompoilains! :D

Well guys, I have to hang my head...... I got back last night from camp in the UP. I never saw hair nor hide in 4 days of hunting. When we got there it was 40 and drizzly and Friday night it started snowing and got cold and was still snowing when I left yesterday. We had 14-16" snow when we left. The deer totally shut down.
I will go out down here this weekend and over Thanksgiving to a spot that is looking very good, so all is not lost.....

Well guys i'm having the worse luck this deer season. My trip to Ohio was great I had an opportunity at a 130" 8pt on the last evening. He came to within 37yrds behind some brush where I thought there was an opening. Boy was I wrong clean miss, found my arrow with no blood. Looked up from the deer spot and notice a few branch that blended in with the deer. So on to opening day in Michigan, 12:20 get down to head back to cabin to grab a bit to eat and see my family. Brother in law says don't get down 2 bucks and a doe coming our way. So I hop the fence hide behind a fallen tree and wait 15 minutes nothing. So I get up take 2-3 steps behind me and here is an 8pt walking right to me. Pull up rifle he stops behind some brown weeds put the cross hairs on his back drop down a little bag!! The deer mule kicks appears to go down. Then he starts running turns to jump fence and is 7-8ft from me turns again goes down the fence line 30-35yrd jumps the fence and I notice no blood. So I rack another shell let her fly hit a tree. So I go to where the deer was on the first shot. White hair and bits of meat. Following little drops a blood for 1/2 mile then nothing.
Oh heres the kicker the first shot are you ready for this was........... 10yards!!! :dizzy:
10 fricking yards!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I almost smashed my rifle against the tree, I was so pissed, I almost threw up.
I made the comment in Ohio to the guys I've never missed a deer or lost a deer. Well guess what carma/deer gods are teaching me a thing or two. From now on I'm going to be the most humble deer hunter ever.

...Well guess what carma/deer gods are teaching me a thing or two. From now on I'm going to be the most humble deer hunter ever.
First off, Congrats on the 4 point!
Secondly, there are only two types of hunters; those of us who have been humbled, and those who haven't hunted long enough yet!
This is probably a good place to do my "Rest of the Story" from this year. On Saturday 11/08 I drew on a nice buck at about 20 yards. It was a very still, quiet morning. Just before I reach full draw the buck hears the rustling of my clothing and looks right up at me. Over confidence sets in and I aim a little low, and hit the release. The buck jumps the string completely and I get a clean miss over its back. The arrow stuck in the tree the buck was standing in front of. Get this... my broadhead was knee high in that tree! If he hadn't jumped I would have taken out the top of his heart! I can't retrieve my broadhead, but I do unscrew the arrow. When I get back to camp I spin-check the arrow and it is still perfect. I break out a new Thunderhead 125 and since I believe the previous shot was perfect, I decide to re-use the same arrow. This is the very first time in 26 years of hunting that I have ever re-used an arrow that was shot at a deer!
The cool thing is the 5 point I took on Monday with that arrow was the same deer that jumped my string!
Anyway, hang in there! Schnap happens to all of us.

Well guys just got back from Oceana County. Ended up with 2 Does and what I was hoping was a 7 Point Buck, but only could count it as a 6 point for our score. The 7th point was just under an inch. Could not file, stretch, bend the ruler or anything to make that point an inch long. Oh well, I tried. Congrats to those that have been successful and to those that haven't connected yet, there is still plenty of season left. I will try and post my pics tomorrow or Friday.

Well here is the tale of the 2008 Oceana Deer Hunt. Hunted a new stand this year. Cut shooting lanes early summer this year. 7:30 look up and there are 2 Does moving through the end of the shooting lane the 1st Doe goes through but the 2nd Doe must have heard me and stopped and looked at the blind. I needed vension for the freezer so I decided to shoot her. At the shot she took off like nothing had happened. Did I whiff? Waited 25 minutes and walked to where she was and saw hair and blood, looked up and she was piled up about 25 yards away...sweet...venison for the freezer.
http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/522/DSC00083doe.JPG
As there are 5 other guys hunting this property and we stay out all day I tagged her and then moved her close to my blind and waited for anything else to come out. 10:30 I look up and there is a Buck moving through the shooting lane. He walks through and stops just on the outside of the lane. He spins around sniffing the air and I shoot him. He hops about 5 feet in the air and runs about 25 yards and crashes 10 yards from where the Doe went down.
http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/521/DSC00084buck_no_gun.JPG
Tag him and now have to wait until the end of shooting hours to get help with him and the doe to hang on the pole at camp. Tuesday night shot another Doe around 5:15-5:30pm. Wasn't going to take her, but I watched her for 30 minutes and no Buck stepped out and she was a mature Doe so decided to fill my freezer with another Doe. Looks like my season will now be done as me and the family usually eat only 3 deer a year. Sorry the story is so long but wanted to share with everyone the events of the hunt. Oh yeah, 6 guys 3 of us took deer with a total of 6 deer taken, 4 Does, 6 point buck and the property owner shooting a BB. He was sick to his stomache after shooting it.

Congratulations to all who have taken deer. I did go on my bowhunting trip to the UP the first week of November. It was a tough year for me this year. I did take a doe but....The damn Yotes beat me to her. I thought I hit her perfect....till I climbed down and retrieved my arrow. It had only trace blood on the shaft and the vanes. It had some brown hair as well. and no blood on the ground it be seen. I was puzzled...BIGTIME. So I backed out slowly went to camp to confer with my camp pals. We decided to give her a little time to expire just incase my shot wasnt like I thought I saw. Anyway I give her a total of about 3.5 hours to lay down. We go to the spot where I shot her her, no blood. We tracked about 50 yards and find blood everywhere, tracked another 70-80 yards and found what left......shoulders, neck, and head...I was not happy to say the least. I was able to determine that I did hit a double lung shot, I am sorta puzzled to why my arrow had little blood and the ground had nothing around the place of impact. That was the beginning of my not so great week....then my Grand mother passed away, (3 weeks after my grand father) I had to cut my trip short. I hope to get out again soon to get some meat.....freezer is empty.

WOOHOO...........I scored me a nice doe this morning 9:30 am .:) I figured I'd walkout and take down one of my tree stands this morning. My buddy talked me into taking my bow, just in case we saw something. We get to my stand, I was preparing to climb up and take my stand down and he spots a nice doe bedded down about 150 yards away on an opposing hill face. We watched it for about 4-5 minutes talking about how I should stalk up on it. So I said what the heck( whats it going to hurt to try) so off I go the long way around to approch this deer from the rear. There was just enough breeze to hide my sounds and movement. 15-20 minutes later I'm getting close to where I needed to be. I get to be within about 40 yards of the deer, I was right behind a fallen oak tree. then I was busted by a button buck that I didn't see bedded down about 25 yards away.....(I was certianly thinking I messed up) That BB jumped up and bounded away about 30 yardHe was watching me bigtime... Thats when the Doe stood up and looked my my way. I froze in place...Thats when the stare down started...It seemed like for ever ( actually only about 5-6 mins total) She bobbed her head, stomped her foot, all the normal things that deer do to make you move...She finally relaxed and started digging under the snow for acorns. She wandered my way ever so slowly ....she offered me a broadside shot ( I paced it at 31 steps afterwards) I drew back, anchord , picked a spot and released.....The arrow found its mark through both lungs. The deer run about 35-40 yards and dropped.(never expected that).I about had a heart attack..I was in disbelief as to what just happened. My buddy Bill had seen the whole thing from my treestand ....he was shocked as well. My first sucessfull stalk and my first December deer with a bow also. Stalking in the snow rocks! All I can say is WOW that was fun....I am so cold now, I can't warm up. Celebration drink time  .
I wont be able to get pics till tomorrow morning.....My digital camera is in my car which is not here now.

I hear ya! My archery buck this year ran 50 yards, stopped, looked around, and fell right there! It still amazes me how quick a double lunger can put em down. This was the fourth time I got to watch a bow deer go down. Two of the other three were adult bucks following doe. These deer didn't go 20 yards before they stopped, looked around in confusion, and fell over!
I have NEVER stalked and taken a deer with my bow! I have gotten to with 20 yards of deer that I couldn't identify their age in thick cover, or thought were too young to shoot; but have never taken a shot.
I am sure that the combination of the stalk and seeing her go down will last in the memory banks ....forever!
Just way to cool!

Went out last night with my 9 and 11 year old daughters. Never shot a deer with them with me, so any deer that came out was probably going to get shot at. 5:00 2 deer come out, 60 yards from our blind. Lead deer was a big Doe...or so I thought. The 2nd deer was a 1.5 year old 6 point. Since I already have a 6 point this year I decided to shoot the "Doe". I drop her in her tracks and the 6 point does not move. He starts looking at her and prancing around her. He stayed around for about 15-20 minutes. My daughters asked me if I was going to shot him too as he would not leave. I let him walk though as I didn't need anymore venison. We get out of the blind and walk up to the "Doe" and uh oh...I see buttons. How can this be? This is a big deer and there is no way I just shot a button buck. I didn't have my flashlight so I didnt look to close at the buttons...I was pretty bummed though. Brought it to my buddies house and get it in the light and low and behold a button buck its not...it is a mature buck that had already dropped its rack. Blood still fresh on the one side and the 2nd side was frozen over and not fresh at all. Not too sure if I should be happy or not...could it have been a 4 pt, 10, 12 or the famous 30 pointer...no one knows. Once the season is over I will walk around the property and see if I can find the horns. Girls were pumped none the less and so was I. Both girls said there hearts were beating so loud they thought the deer would be able to hear them...now that is what hunting is all about. Sorry I couldn't add anymore points for us, but thought I would share this story.

Nope - she is a Spartan all the way. Masters degree and all. Shame she married such a shmuck! I had my fill of Chippewas and Bulldogs when I lived in that end of the world!

I'm sure that everyone has been busy, with the holidays and trying to get a deer or another deer before the end of the season. I was a little surprised that we went a week without a post in this thread. I will not be out looking for a buck, but I will be out looking for another doe or two. The wife says the freezer is really empty and it needs to be filled. Happy Holidays to all! :D:D

It's been fun guys.
I missed twice, not this weekend but last weekend, in muzzleloader up here. Gotta get out and practice more offhand, laying in a snowbank, not sitting, but more of a laying position, with about a 40 mph crosswind shots...

At least you had a shot at a deer. I passed up on a spike the opening day of firearm and never seen another buck. I did get a small doe earlier in the season and a BB on the last day of muzzleloader, but the wife says that's not enough, so I'll be out on Wed. & Thurs. trying to fill the freezer.

At least you have a late season...... I have a couple buddies down there looking for a fat doe for me..
Both my shots were at does. I had a 4 point dead to rights at about 40 yards, but I was hunting on a friend of a friends property and thought I would leave it for him next year.....

Congrats Cass on another doe. I had a chance for another antlerless deer last night, but having shot a small doe and a BB this year I was not sure of the size of this one and gave it a free pass to next season. It has been a fun contest this year, and I have enjoyed reading of my teammates success and failures. Everyone have a good off season and maybe we will be teamed up in the future. If anyone would like to meet up sometime for some ice fishing on a Walleye filled northern lake give me a pm and maybe we can work something out. I've been ice fishing for years and never caught any walleye through the ice.
